!historyphotos@quokk.au

Posting historical events, famous photos, and things that catch my eye since the invention of camera.

Did you know, the first photographic camera was a modified box camera obscura used by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 to expose a bitumen-coated pewter plate, producing the earliest permanent photograph.

I replaced the old community icon, as it was a low quality generation by an old version of DALL-E. I'm open to updating it to something better, so feel free to discuss below.

I'm here with a new community for you folks. It's dedicated to games created without using genAI. I'll be sharing games that I find myself, and I encourage anyone interested to do the same.

!CommunityOfTheDay@lemmy.world

One community per day, picked by a bot — with live subscriber counts, 30-day activity, and the month's most active discussion as a sample, so you can see what a community is actually like before joining. SFW only.

Got a genuinely active community that deserves a day? DM the bot: !suggest !community@instance — suggestions go before the pool.

Young comm, so feedback is welcome.

This community exists to encourage US eligible voters to vote early and engage the people they know to do the same. This is what the internet originally was built for! Please come and join and help spread these cards far and wide.

With mander.xyz being down for the past couple months, a huge gap has been left in the Fediverse for herpetology enthusiasts, reptile keepers, and field herpers.

To help reconnect our community, I’ve launched !herps@r1b.it, a quiet, nature-focused space dedicated to cold-blooded creatures of all kinds!

Whether you’re looking to share field observations, show off bioactive enclosures, post photos of native frogs and snakes, or discuss care advice, you’re very welcome here.

⚠️ IMPORTANT! If/when mander comes back online, I fully encourage you all to go back to it -- it's an absolutely wonderful instance. I'd love it if some people used both, but I don't expect everyone to.

!ecospheres@slrpnk.net

mander.xyz went down and doesn't seem to be coming back, so we're recreating this community. I'll crosspost the original posts to here over time to fill it up and then I have some new posts to make with my ongoing jarrariums.

Everyone grab a jar and scoop stuff out of your local pond to join in! Here's a guide with a lot of info, but you really can just scoop stuff and not overthink it.

Remember when you could just go to a web page and see a fun thing or silly little website? You didn’t have register and verify your email, or close a bunch of ads, or deal with pop ups, pop overs, and dark ui patterns? Here’s a collection of silly little websites: games, productivity apps, interesting info, or surreal art projects.

This is a new community set up to help connect people who are learning a language with those who are attempting to learn/improve at that language!

Currently it is just me and not much is set up but I would love if anyone is available to help moderate the community or has any artwork we could use for the icon and banner.

!posttoday@lemmy.zip

I just wrote up a post explaining the idea behind the community here

https://lemmy.zip/post/71296154

But to give a shorter version, Post Today is meant to be a reliable, low effort place to share and discuss almost anything you want, and to see how many days in a row you can go without breaking your streak.

Early reddit had r/reddit as a catch all place to post and I think it did a lot to grow the site. While I know various c/random, c/justpost, and c/interestingshare communities exist and are great, I think I am offering something a bit different here.

My hope is that it'll catch a bit of the 196 vibe, but be more varied, and that it will lead to an interesting community.

Or it'll just be me posting and it'll be like a little personal blog I can look back through. I've had communities go both ways ahah.

If you've read this far please go there and make a post right now!

State of affairs for technology seem bad? But what is being done to change it? And what could be done by you so it changes at least for yourself?

A community to talk about the reversal of enshittification, be it news, actions that could be done, etc.

And my favorite rule of the community:

If you must talk about enshittification, please include how someone could reverse it; otherwise, post it elsewhere

Not the mod or creator. I just post there. Home instance is programming.dev, see so many enshittification and LLM war posts even after unsubscribing to communities that post them a lot like !Programming. More than a little frustrated that An Enshittification Happened gets 500 upvotes and tons of engagement, but this little community telling you How To Resist Or At Least Partially Reverse An Enshittification (whether that be an overall strategy thinkpiece on what actions could happen at a macro level to help stop it, or a how-to guide for your personal device/experience) averages 20 upvotes. So I figured I'd try to do something about it and promo it instead of just being angry and doing nothing.

Original promo from its mod @auster@thebrainbin.org cross-posted from: https://thebrainbin.org/m/newcommunities@lemmy.world/t/1339854

!deshittification@thebrainbin.org

Made it because reversal should still be possible, and although there's !enshitification@slrpnk.net, other than its "positive monday" rule, the deshittification aspect isn't covered by their rules/guidelines (nothing against their community, though).

For everyone who enjoyed Reddit's BoRU and other update subs, I give you (again) Best of Internet Updates

!bestofinternetupdates@lemmy.world

https://lemmy.world/c/BestOfInternetUpdates

This does include content from Reddit but, Reddit is not the only source, all titles are tagged with the originating source so if you do not wish to read anything from Reddit, you can skip anything with a Reddit tag. The sidebar also includes a sorting by tags list (powered by the lemmy.world search, you can search from your own instance as well).

There's a post guide complete with a copy and paste template if you want to post your own best of updates. We do not accept bot reposts. All top level posts must be made by a human please and thank you. We also don't scrape things with a bot ourselves, I either copy and paste Reddit BoRU's by hand or source the material and compile it myself as I expect others to do as well.

If you know of a similar community that should be linked in the sidebar, let me know!

New to YoTyan? Here's a quick introduction!

Here’s a quick explanation of the game for anyone who’s new to YoTyan!

What is YoTyan?

YoTyan is a tabletop game that originated in China and was invented in 2020. The game is played with multiple players and involves learning different strategies and skills as you play. It is a variation of Uncball, also known as Starball, with its own rules, scoring system, and number of slots.

How do you play YoTyan?

YoTyan is a two-player tabletop game where players take turns shooting balls into the slots on the three starfish (tiers). Each starfish has seven slots and is worth different points. Players can earn bonus points and extra turns through different plays. The goal is to score more points than your opponent.

What are the YoTyan streams like?

The streams feature players teaching viewers how to play while watching new players learn and improve over time. It's fun to see everyone's progress as they learn the game and gain more experience.

Why does the team stream?

The YoTyan team streams to share the game with more people, teach the viewers how to play, and have fun together. The streams also help introduce people to YoTyan and the tables, so those who enjoy watching can learn more about getting a table of their own.

Where can I watch?

Memes, questions, fan art, musings, gameplay videos, news, etc. are all welcome. Clock Tower to Resident Evil 9, all titles retro and new belong here as long as there's a horror feel.

!ebookreaders@lemmy.zip

I have an unhealthy obsession with ebook readers. At last count, I owned 45 dedicated devices, including the PalmPilot PDA I bought in 1997. I read The Hobbit on that tiny screen. During staff meetings at work! No one had any clue! lol

The idea that I could carry several books in my pocket completely fascinated me, and before long I was collecting every reader I could get my hands on. My budget is tighter now, so I don’t buy anymore unless I see a super cheap deal on ebay that I can rehab or something.

I still read fiction every single day on a dedicated ebook reader, and I still follow news about the newest models. So I figured I might as well start a community, just in case there’s at least one other nerd out there who loves this stuff as much as I do.

And if not, I’m perfectly happy with an audience of one. :)

Were you excited to post a story to the !dull_mens_club@lemmy.world (now !dullsters@dullsters.net), only to realise that it's too interesting?

Did you want to go rambling on !casualconversation@piefed.social, but decide nobody would be interested?

Do you have juicy drama to post to !fediverselore@lemmy.ca, if only it weren't closed?

Look no further than !storytime@multiverse.soulism.net! A community full of stories with no theme and no need for a coherent point! Scroll the community to read a bunch of pointless anecdotes! Post like an octogenerian! Yell at clouds! Or, if you must... you are permitted to tell good stories. I suppose.
