tried rebooting, didn’t work. Tied restoring license, didn’t work. Can’t communicate with them because their stupid AI bullshit ahows no submit button to send my questions.

So…. Is there a class action suit I can jump in on?

EDIT; an hour on the phone with three different departments. And the end result:

I have to buy the game again. Even though they verified that it shows purchased- both in my actual account (he even quoted me the purchase date) , AND through the PS app.

This is how it starts folks. Canceling my PS Plus as we speak.

"You will own nothing and you will be happy"

Sony's been going on this path for quite a while, since at least the PSP Iirc. You can't own what you can't keep, so Sony even redefines that word. Even their subsidiaries, like the Crunchyroll Store, are getting affected by Sony's agenda.

Now, if you're on the PS4 or PS5, I do agree you should buy Skyrim again.

...on GOG.

Then mod your console, install Linux on it, and run the officially DRM free version of the game through Wine. 👌

Or buy a physical copy for the PS3 and emulate on RPCS3 on Linux on the PS4/PS5, but it wouldn't be as poetic.

File a comaint with your credit card. Even if it was years ago this is the kind of thing a credit card company usually frowns on.

Be aware that Sony may lock out your account if you do this. Companies will often do that arguing either that the account must be compromised or that the chargeback was made in bad faith. If you’re truly done with Sony that doesn’t matter, though!

Hey, the playstation modding scene has been booming lately, if you're on ps4 or some updates for ps5, there's a really easy way to get it all back and then some for about 20min of tutorial time. Go turn off auto updates if you're on ps5, that way you can wait for the mods to catch up with your version if you're outside the golden zone.

If you want, I can even help you work through it if you're worried. Goes for anyone reading this, hit me up. If we can't own games then piracy isn't stealing.

This. It's also legal in most countries. Now theoretically you were supposed to back up your copy before it was revoked, but realistically the fact is you have a license to the game and you are simply getting the materials required to fulfill that license.

It feels like there is some piece of information missing here.

What reason did the rep on the phone give for why the license was revoked? If they have the purchase record and your license was revoked, they will have a reason for the revocation. But you've never mentioned what PS says is the reason for why this is happening.

They said Bethesda did it. And that they couldn’t know why. But I haven’t played ESO in years and was actively playing Skyrim when it happened. This was on a PS5 as well, so no weird hacked or pirated stuff. Just playing a single player game. That’s it.

Did you get your copy of Skyrim using a code from a reseller? They will frequently revoke stolen codes that get resold online.

Did you cheat, exploit, or do other anti-social things in ESO when you played? How long ago you played isn't immunity from consequences.

    Just tossing out possibilities

Either way, this is not a Sony issue. Bethesda revoked your license. Blame them if you're going to blame anybody.

OP mentioned a purchase receipt through the PS App. To me, that suggests it was a direct sale.

I would be amazed to get corrected, but I don’t think Valve has EVER deleted a product people paid for from their Steam accounts. They don’t even sell non-game software anymore, but they still support the apps people bought when they did.

They still kind of support the games that have been delisted from Steam; in that if you bought a game on Steam before it was delisted, it will still be in your Steam library and you can launch it through Steam and have all the social hubs still connected to said game.

Having worked in customer support - a lot - I don't place much stock in that kind of language. "Seeing the purchase on my account" can just as easily be "see that I redeemed the code from my purchase".

Not saying it is the case, just that it could be, until we get clarification from OP

Also, Steam can and definitely has allowed developers to revoke a license for various reasons. Usually related to fraud. But sometimes other reasons.

Here's the developer portal page that specifically mentions "ban or disable steam key" (which can be done even after the key is redeemed)

    https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/keys

As much as those articles highlight problematic situations, part of the issues is that it was developers selling keys, not Valve. That’s why I was highlighting that the PSN sale mentioned and the receipt. If it was directly between the customer and the PlayStation Store, would make for a direct relationship with Sony, not the game dev.

But @Rhoeri@lemmy.world, a rule of thumb in console modding is to never update your console, unless explicitly said otherwise.

System updates in consoles after a mod is released usually also carry a patch for the vulnerability that allowed modding.

Also if you speak Portuguese and/or Spanish, or are willing to tolerate Youtube's AI translations, you can find some pretty good tutorials from native speakers of either languages.

Dodging crap like this is why I buy games physical, or digitally but DRM-free. If you're gonna buy Skyrim again, get it from GOG, they just sell you the game and then don't do such crap like verify you own the license that you actually own...

I haven't the foggiest. The only thing I could imagine is that they think the license was obtained illegally or something but there is no way I can know. OP said that sony said even they don't know and blamed it on Bethesda. I'd be more likely to believe sony is lying and this isn't above board, but that's just because I think they've been a horrible company for decades.

Take it to small claims court. Ask for the money to replace the game + the filing fee from Sony America. Cite all documentation confirming your attempt at relief and if you have it, receipt of the game - possibly available in the form of credit card receipt, but also proof that you've played the game on the system.

They won't even contest it most likely. Send the bill to their finance department.

the last time I touched sony was the PS2. Which was a console so good and powerful it was still alive and viable up until the PS4 release.

Sony has a ripe and bountiful history of absolutely shit behavior with regards to Playstation and its customers since the PS2, almost entirely because of the change to PSN accounts and all the bullshit that follows that, that I can not even fathom how people can continue to give it money in this day and age.

It's a joke of Skyrim players. So many editions have been released on so many platforms. Most people who've been playing it tend to accumulate extra copies. On steam I think I have the base, gold, remaster, and special edition. I have a switch copy, and an Xbox copy or two. I'd be pissed as hell if fuckin Sony took any one of them.

Well, this time are you going to learn your lesson? The only acceptable way to acquire Sony games (or any of their software, for that matter) is via piracy.

For decades, Sony has been handing out this lesson over and over and over again. They must be very frustrated!

Teach it to everyone you know so Sony doesn't have to try so hard anymore.

The entire world should have learned this lesson about Sony back on October 31, 2005 when Sysinternals co-founder Mark Russinovich published a blog post about a rootkit Sony was secretly installing on people's PCs:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal

They have been villains for a long fucking time now.

They sold the PlayStation 3, marketing its ability to install 3rd party operating systems. Then they decided, "haha, suckers!" And pulled the plug on that feature... Just like they do with games! It's almost as if they're known for this shit!

In April 2011, The PlayStation Network was breached. Everyone's personal information, credit card details, etc were leaked. They told no one for a fucking week. They knew it was bad. They knew people were going to be victimized as a result. They obviously didn't give AF! Because "doing the right thing" has never been in Sony's playbook.

More recent: Months after Helldivers 2 became an unexpected success on PC, Sony announced a retroactive requirement that all Steam players link a PlayStation Network account to continue playing. In other words, it's more of their, "I have altered the deal, pray I do not alter it further" bullshit.

So fucking yes! You should have known!

Yeah, right. I totally deserve it for not reading every random backwoods tech blog by someone I have no reason to know who is- that is known or unknown to man for the slight chance that just maybe something just might be remotely relevant to a purchase I made, might make, wil make, or won’t bother to make sometime in the near future, distant future, or quite possibly….. never.

Absolutely, bud. I can see how that is entirely on me.

You 100% don't deserve it, but that's sorta the thing, you shouldn't have to keep up with tech blogs to know about this. Sony installing rootkits on people's machines without permission is flagrantly illegal, and people should have gone to fucking prison. It should have either been the noose around Sony's neck or the catalyst for major change. It was neither, really, although as far as I'm aware, they didn't do anything that stupid/illegal again.

Yup. I recall that. Got my PC bunged up by it and I ended up getting a budget 160GB hard drive and reinstalling a fresh copy of WinXP on it.

Learned the hard lesson about ripping CD's and ended up pivoting to jumping the analog gap and doing line-in recordings of my music and treating much of it like I do vinyl LPs. Have a PowerMac G4 (one with zero latency) with an Avid audiophile card that I use so the quality of the recordings are fine.

Only Sony products I have now are a couple of digital cameras - which are actually decent.

All you had to do was disable auto play and you could rip the CDs at full quality. Doing digital -> analog -> digital is kinda like resaving a jpeg as another jpeg; you will lose quality even if your equipment is great because the digital <-> analog conversion is lossy, due to one being discrete in both time and amplitude while the other is continuous in time and amplitude. Plus there's line noise.
