The entire world should have learned this lesson about Sony back on October 31, 2005 when Sysinternals co-founder Mark Russinovich published a blog post about a rootkit Sony was secretly installing on people's PCs:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal

They have been villains for a long fucking time now.

They sold the PlayStation 3, marketing its ability to install 3rd party operating systems. Then they decided, "haha, suckers!" And pulled the plug on that feature... Just like they do with games! It's almost as if they're known for this shit!

In April 2011, The PlayStation Network was breached. Everyone's personal information, credit card details, etc were leaked. They told no one for a fucking week. They knew it was bad. They knew people were going to be victimized as a result. They obviously didn't give AF! Because "doing the right thing" has never been in Sony's playbook.

More recent: Months after Helldivers 2 became an unexpected success on PC, Sony announced a retroactive requirement that all Steam players link a PlayStation Network account to continue playing. In other words, it's more of their, "I have altered the deal, pray I do not alter it further" bullshit.

So fucking yes! You should have known!

Serious question: Let's say that AI "gets good" and overcomes the hallucination issues. Would it still be negative for mental health? Would it be even worse (because reality sucks for kids right now)?

I want to know if it's AI that's the real problem here or the world in which we're forcing kids to live.

I can imagine a situation where a kid with (insert serious problems) asks AI to be realistic about their future job/economic prospects. It returns truthful statistics, then that kid commits suicide. Was the AI culpable?

What if it recommended joining a revolutionary group as the most likely way to improve their lives or the lives of their children/families?

What if it suggested that sacrifice is necessary to improve the condition of the world?

Would an AI that does these things be good or bad? If the AI's system prompt has, always tell the truth will we have created a vastly more dangerous monster than the AI we have today?

On several writing Discords, admitting that you used AI to perform research is just as bad as using AI to write your entire novel.

They will read this admission from this author and conclude that he violated the spirit of writing by using AI for anything.

Well, this time are you going to learn your lesson? The only acceptable way to acquire Sony games (or any of their software, for that matter) is via piracy.

For decades, Sony has been handing out this lesson over and over and over again. They must be very frustrated!

Teach it to everyone you know so Sony doesn't have to try so hard anymore.

Been saying this since 2020: AI is going to follow the same pendulum that beats in the heart of IT since its inception. Some new tech starts out centralized, then slowly shifts to a distributed model. Examples:

    • Mainframes to desktops.
    • Unix servers with (X11) thin clients to desktops.
    • Server-rendered web to client rendered (e.g. SPAs).
    • PBX to soft phones and on-device audio DSP.

AI is moving even faster. Examples:

    • Apple and Google have already moved inference to their phones to save central compute resources (hybrid approach).
    • Companies are now moving from cloud AI providers to locally hosted options.

Before you know it, companies and consumers will have the necessary hardware to handle all their AI needs with edge hardware (e.g. right on their phones and desktops—no need to call out to any servers).

This week's news had researchers demonstrating that ChatGPT Astra could natively modify and improve a tiny Qwen model. How long before we have models that have had all their internal knowledge (fact) checked and embedded into chips via Cerebras Systems method?

We could have the equivalent of PhD-level knowledge on zillions of topics built into our PCs and phones and these hardware models wouldn't need to call out to the cloud at all except to receive patches/updates that get applied whenever they run.

They'd get refined and updated over time as flaws are found. People would regularly update these chips in their PCs or buy new phones so they'd have the latest knowledge and capabilities without having to wait for the software patches to do their thing.

Decades ago, I moved from Massachusetts to Florida. When I moved from that house to a new one, I discovered an unopened bathroom fan motor + blower wheel in the attic (left by a previous owner). "Nice" (head nod) I said to myself, and threw it in with everything else in the moving boxes.

Of course, my wife told me to "just leave it" and "you're such a hoarder!" It stayed in that box when we moved again a decade later.

Today, one of our bathroom exhaust fans stopped working (for the 2nd time) so I decided to reach deep into my hoard of random crap. "I have just the thing!" I still remembered which box it was in and where I stored it in the attic above the garage!

BONUS: The old bracket nuts didn't fit the new motor so I had to fish around in my collection of random nuts, bolts, and screws to find two exact matches. Which I had, of course—because I save all the screws of all the things 👍

I saved ~$37 and a trip to the hardware store today!

River Monsters was cancelled because they ran out of monsters! They literally caught them all (Note: This is the real reason; I'm not making that up!).

Because of this—and the impressive staying power/popularity of the show over time—the executives have decided to fund continuing research to discover a new world, and this research has finally bore fruit!

A new world—full of rivers—has finally been found! Because of their continuous funding, they get first crack at it.

A daring crew is assembled, they start recording, and enter the portal...

I'm guessing that we'll see lots of news in 2026 about how companies are hiring developers to help improve the memory efficiency of their software because they just can't get enough servers. Also, the servers they do get will have reduced RAM compared to what they wanted.

The fire extinguisher in my garage is almost 20 years old now and the pressure gauge is right at the edge of the red zone. That means it's time to order a new one!

Decided to get two because it seems like a good idea to have one out by the grill (and they're a better deal that way) 👍

Very excited because this means I get to play teach the kids how to properly use a fire extinguisher with the old one! Been a while since we used the fire pit out back...
