I'm here from Reddit. They banned me for absolutely no reason. That's frustrating. How works Lemmy ?

If you aren't a bot change your tag or people are going to block you

Took a look at your profile and it's still tagged as a bot to me. However, when I checked your profile from the default lemmy.world frontend, it is not.

I am guessing it's just taking a while to propagate and some instances or frontends are using cached data.

I guess it's yet another thing you'd have to get used to here: due to how decentralized things are here, some things take a while to propagate.

No-poop guy is a deep cut. It's such a shame he deleted his account and the posts, truly deserved to remain the most upvoted post of all time.

Shortly after the Reddit API debacle three years ago and the ensuing little exodus of users from there to here some guy created an Advice Wanted post asking for dietary advice for a circumstance where he couldn't poop for three days. He was using very vague language, he was refusing to specify exactly why he couldn't poop, and he was refusing to specify exactly what he was doing for those three days. When pressed about it he said he would technically perhaps be able to poop if he really had to, but it would be much better for everyone involved if he didn't and he would really like to avoid it.

Obviously replies kept flooding in, both befuddlement, genuine advice as well as rampant speculation about what kind of activity he was to be engaging in. It also took over the meme communities for a good while, and I think it was still the most upvoted post of all time here when he deleted it (and his account).

Change post type to All and sort by Active. Start blocking communities that you don't want to see and subscribing to communities that interest you.

If you are like me and you want to see where everyone is talking, change your sort to New Comments instead of Active.

I like "all" and "top" 1 hour or 6 hours, which is a better way to get to interesting content that changes over the course of the day

Active seems the least active though. It's the most active comments in threads, so it will seem stale for awhile. I suggest, All, subscribed and local and switching to hot, scaled and top 6 hours. Play around with them until you find your sweet spot.

People around here really love Linux.

Not saying it's a bad thing. Linux is great.

I use Linux, but not getting horny. It's an operating system after all. For me the best part is the command line package install. Windows also have one, called "winget".

I really really reaaheeeheeheeheely love Linux. But the rest shouldn't be an ass about it. Even though it is superior (my opinion) there is plenty of OS'es to go around for everyone. And to each their own.

The choice of an OS doesn't give anyone permission to be smug and condenscending.

By the way I use whatever works at the moment.

IMO, Linux users (myself among them, fwiw) are broadly less insufferable now that Windows shat the bed so hard and replacing/upgrading machines became unaffordable.

I see a lot less "only rubes use Windows, I run Linux 😎" attitudes and more "Linux gave me my computer back" which reconverted me after a long Linux hiatus sparked by impossible driver puzzles on a busted netbook in the early 2010s.

Every machine in my home runs CachyOS and it removed stress from our lives. Windows at this point is like a neglectful ex, and KDE the new partner that treats me right 😊

Honestly, it’s pretty left wing and there can be duplicates of communities. There’s far less content than on Reddit but I find that better because I lost weeks of my life doom scrolling on Reddit. I hit a point on here where I just have to wait for more stuff to appear. One good thing about that is you can comment on something and actually be heard. Not like on Reddit where all but the most niche communities have 200+ comments on each post.

Also, and this is a big one, you have to be running Linux.

Also, the more difficult your Linux distribution is to use, the more respect you'll receive.

    E.g. Ubuntu < NixOS < LFS

Today I finished setting up local searxng on NixOS. I made it so that when the searxng module is enabled the searxng will get added to firefox as custom and default search engine which is pretty neat.

E: Otherwise if the module is disabled then ddg is used as a fallback.

    #ME2

    I mean, I didn't when I joined Lemmy, but I do now.

I don't think Lemmy was the deciding factor, Microsoft almost forced me by checking how much they can enshitificate win11 before users start exploding.

That's perfectly valid. If Windows suits your needs and priorities, use it. I use Windows on my work laptop because Linux would be a nightmare with all the tools and apps we use. But personal laptop? Linux all the way.

For me Windows feels fast. I have Intel Core 7 150U with iGPU 24 gb RAM 1 to SSD Wifi, Bluetooth, etc.

My computer is an Asus VivoBook S14. Do you think it can be more faster than ever with Linux ? And will Linux increase this battery life and autonomy ? For now, it's the only dumb point.

Acceptable excuse. I am all in with Linux except that one program that uses .net and I can not get wine to work.

So the laptop with win11 comes out every month or so. After the 3-4 hours of updates and 2-3 reboots, it's up and running for the 30minute task I have.

It's windows 11 - it overwrites settings and installs whatever the fuck it wants. It's not as bad where you are because of the EU laws. I then spend some time removing all the shit etc it forced onto the machine this time.

    It's a never ending game of whack-a-mole.

Personnaly, I debloat Windows 11 with Revo Uninstaller. For some reasons, sometimes, random updates slows down once you deleted some Windows Apps. No real proof why, but I think they're updates for this components and they can required rebooting to be properly installed.

In case you're serious, Lemmy is the hot, exciting, punk, rebel version of reddit and Linux is the hot, exciting, punk, rebel version of using your computer. The motivation for using either are quite similar.

It's okay if you're not linux, but there are a lot of those users here. You'll hear a lot about it, lol.

It is not an anger factory here either for the most part. You're coming around election time, so there is a bit of it. You might go through a bit of withdrawal.

It's not strictly necessary to run Linux, there's also the BSDs, PonyOS, 9front, etc.
