You can change your username, just depends where you are.

No casual or exploring mode, all PvP. Must be sponsored by two previously existing players, and their in-game experience completely influences yours.

- The last major patch was forever ago and it banned almost every player at the time.
- The dev(s) are super quiet. No one seems to have talked to them and those who claim to have talked with them have real "my uncle works for Nintendo" vibes so no one knows if anyone has ever talked with them.
- We don't fully know how the physics engine works yet, and the dev(s) aren't answering.
- There's a thriving modder community but most servers hate modders and try to ban them. There isn't a modder only server yet, but we're getting closer as other servers keep forcing us out.

On the contrary, there's a huge wave of player classes are getting patched out right now, but it's fucked-up because it's mostly due to those classes being vulnerable to griefing by one other class, and that class is only more popular than ever.
99.9% of people want to play co-op but 0.1% force everyone to play on competitive mode because of the resource advantage playing competitive against cooperative players captures.
99.9% of people want to play co-op
That has not been my experience.
Quite a few people insist they're playing solo and act as though all the other players are NPCs
You also have a real problem of distance rendering, such that people outside your visual horizon seem to stop existing for much of the population.
The weird thing is if players simply worked together to fight back we could have co-op mode.
OOF that AI slop imagery - like, it's so bad now, you can see it from a mile away. how did ai image synthesis get worse over time? they let it eat it's own garbage, that's how - gigo is reinforcing all the bad ideas RAPIDLY.
look at those clouds - you know, the ones that look like a blackmetal band logo - everywhere. and the strange thing going on where the mountains of pakistan meet india - wtf is that supposed to be, continental quilting?
jfc
Also it's literally just a picture of earth. There are a thousand and one pictures of earth on the internet that look better.
There is zero reason to make this photo with AI. It's more effort than just googling a photo.
like, it's so bad now, you can see it from
a mile awayspace!
Couldn't they find a picture of earth? I mean the Deep Space Climate Observatory takes a photo of a single side of the planet every hour or so.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Space_Climate_Observatory
it's not an availability thing methinks... it's a fetish thing.
they really think that AI should provide everything. then they won't even have to move, get out of bed etc., they can just become one with their friend the algo, and the slop will flow right to them.
- Levels 7-15 are filled with griefers
- There are no viable builds for levels 12-17, everything is awkward and unbalanced
- You're assigned a team when you spawn, but you don't even know the teams exist until level 12 or so, and once you learn what team you're on, you can't change teams
- You're forced to play on hardcore mode and you're only allowed one playthrough [disputed]
- There's no pause, and if you logout it's game over
- Game balance is shitty: P2W players exploit the rest, some players spawn with permabuffs in place, others spawn with permanerfs
- Nobody can see any other player's HP or buffs, so a player playing on ezmode can pretend they're just good at the game
- No official documentation, although certain clans claim they have the official documentation, these clans are frequently at war over whose documentation is correct
- Released 10 billion years ago, no updates since, no way to contact the devs
- Multiplayer only
- Player housing exists, but is absurdly expensive and requires constant grinding to maintain
- Cooking minigame can be fun, but you have to play it all the time, and it's expensive to skip it. It's also attached to a clean-up minigame which sucks.
- Most food in the game has long-term debuffs that are hard to clear
- You have to juggle all these meters: health, thirst, hunger, temperature, horniness, sleep, boredom, anxiety, etc. but the devs didn't simply put them on a HUD, instead there are these frequently buggy out-of-band hints.
no documentation but plenty of youtube tutorials on what not to do. or how to do it very shittily.
The last bullet is the best!
I was thinking of "My Summer Car", where you have a "urine" meter that you have to manage.

Extremely limited character creation options.
-
After about level 40 the higher the level you get to, the less powerful your character becomes.
I'd say no character creation options. Characters can only be created by other existing players working as a pair. The characters they create are mostly stuck with whatever attributes their creators possessed, plus some randomness thrown in. Even they get no character creation options. The closest thing they get to character creation options is in choosing the other player they want to work with for character creation.
Unfortunately, the character creation minigame is probably the most fun minigame in "Earth", and a lot of people play it without actually intending to create a character at all. They may never even evaluate whether the partner they chose for the minigame might create a good character with them.
If that minigame results in a character getting created, you can be assigned that character when you first login. There's no character select screen, no customization screen, you just start playing.
Luckily, there are a minority of players who play a version of the character creation minigame which, for them, is just as fun as the "official" one, but this version has no chance of ever creating a character. Sadly, most players have absolutely zero interest in that version of the minigame and only want to play the original.
- if you drink too much you piss yourself
- if you eat bad food you shit yourself
RNG put me in a shithole server spawn point.
This is just a cons list.
Pros:
- you can eat cookies
Unlockable Adult content. Lots of RNG involved depending on your stats and server though.
Also cats.
If you're following Carl Sagan's apple pie recipe, this gets you 99% of the way there.
Meme:
“conditions on earth are bad”
Same fuckin meme:
AI-ass picture of earth, as if we didn’t also have real photos available
Its wild how it took no time at all for the masses to outsource their brains to the first thing that offered the service; no concern at all for the quality of the service either. The last 5 years have just confirmed every shitty thought I've had about humanity over the years.
You forgot that your starting area determines literally everything about your quality of life and average lifespan.
As well as the rare "born rich" perk that turns the difficulty of the game completely off and puts you into MC story mode where everyone else becomes an NPC.
Ugh, the hidden fees too. Sign-up is free and you typically get your subscription sponsored by an older account until you finish the tutorial. After that it's just microtransaction after microtransaction, and if you stop paying then your account gets deleted
Also: Hardmode only
PvP is banned and the mods lock your account if you do it
You can choose your own username but you have to play for 18 years and face disdain from some players
You can change your username later, but yeah, your initial one is chosen by the players who invited you.
On the other link aggregation website, there is a place called /r/outside that is all about this; do we have that here too already? 😄
Edit: apparently yes, !outside@lemmy.world
I keep getting this error message
CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED: MUTATION_DF508_DETECTED
Ouch man, me too, but I looted someone else’s lungs about 2 decades ago
Pay to win
Well, more like pay to live. Pay to play?
Also heavily spawn dependent. Some places you get free tutorials, some your parents need you to work and in some you are not allowed to take the tutorials at all
The metaphor doesn’t really work for this one. “Pay to win“ implies using real-world money to progress instead of in-game currency. If Earth is a game, then all our money is “in-game” and “pay to win“ would mean you could progress further by using money from beyond Earth
It kinda does work, short a few edge cases of extreme luck it's impossible to traditionally earn the in game currency in game sufficient to really thrive. It's all dependent on what game package of boosters and starting cash your parents could afford. It's out of game currency in the context of your life in the game.
Used Claude to vibe code an Earth replacement
Early access available on the Epic Games Store
Mods are worse than reddit mods. You can be shadow banned for no reason at all.
Some of this is false or misleading. For example:
You can change your username after the tutorial.
Some players are hoarding all the resources, and formed gangs to keep their power. Sucks. You can't just shoot them because the other players whine, and you'll probably get banned.
Graphics are nice, though. Very detailed.
Can't really make a fair judgement on that when it's the only game I've ever played. Hell, it's not even in 4D
Got to have a universe scale GPU to render detail, ray tracing over infinite distance for every photon in existence is very expensive.
Too many microtransactions on top of a very high subscription.
Boring, frustrating, unrewarding but mandatory side quests (microtasks) required periodically. (Filing taxes, making insurance claims, disputing shitty fines given by mistake, waiting 30 min in enshittified store to wait for product to be unlocked by emoloyee, registering vehicles if needed)
Ostensibly you get to pick your own class and guild. But they can revoke your membership at any time for any reason. And if you go too long without one, you lose access to your spawn point, they cut off your access to consumables, and eventually early ban you. So you're mostly soft-locked into doing whatever you can to appease your guild masters while secretly trying to apply with new ones if you wish for a change.
Spawn kills and friendly-fire enabled
IGN Rating: 8/10
There is a minigame in it that is literally the entire GTA 6, so that's kinda cool.
