The same thing we do every recession, Pinky. Try to spend as little as possible on only the essentials and hope we don't end up homeless.

Self-employed tradesman, ill probably have to get a normal job. Which sucks for everyone, I keep my costs way lower for customers but digging up business and doing the work is a real challenge. And obviously ill miss my freedom. But at least ill just have to pull my 40hrs.
Wife works for a gov in a very stable position, keeping costs below her salary is how we plan to.
Jerking dudes off behind a dumpster is recession proof employment.
And then you pay another dude to jerk you off, and he pays the guy you jerked off to jerk him off. That's 3x GDP right there. Recession solved.
I’ve had friends in the strip club business that have complained about how they make less money when the economy is down. Idk if your plan would be affected in the same way.
HJ? BJ? ZJ?
If this recession hits enough people as hard as it seems, I'm going to have to invest in a prosthetic just to make sure folks like you can have the pride of earning money with your handjobs instead of accepting handouts.
You're weird go to the end of the line.
Im trying to speed run affording a cheap plot of land and to work it to make it self sufficient but close enough to a major city that I can still travel for work if needed. Ideally I’d like a electric vehicle that I can charge on a semi-off grid system but that’s a much longer term plan. I essentially want to return to homesteading/semi-subsistence farming. With current tech and tech around the corner, I feel like with the right moves you can do it with minor to no loss of modern luxury comforts. If I can mostly feed and house myself then logically I only need to work part time for mortgage payments and land taxes, and stray costs of fixing stuff.
it’s kinda like that vegan argument that’s been made lately, that no one is demanding you quit meat cold turkey even reducing is a MAJOR win. It’s hard to quit my participation in capitalism cold turkey, growing my own food, producing my own solar electricity, and overall reducing my consumption needs and having self reliance is a win.
that, and the only true reliable wealth in life is having access to productive land imo. Vegetables grow in the garden all the same regardless of stock prices, and the root cellar still keeps your jarred supplies cold. Im under no delusions of surviving any apocalypses but I will be much safer for some nasty recessions.
also, I just think this kind of lifestyle would be neat. I’d probably do it anyways even if I was dirty rich. It’s my version of a project car in the garage. A project homestead in the woods.
I applaud ALL of that, but I gotta comment on the food thing. The only reasonable way to provide your own food is to excel at a crop or three and trade with like minded growers.
I had similar dreams when I first got my 2.5 acres of swamp. Nope! Unless I got heavy machinery to pull the muck uphill to where the soil sucks (basically doesn't exist) and mix it in AND cut down shitloads of trees, that land is a non-starter. For now I'm trying to get super tough, self sustaining food that doesn't take any care like our local blackberries. Pretty thin on ideas there, and without living there, it costs time and gas so I can't run out there daily.
Yep the food will probably be HEAVILY dependant on what kind of land and/or my neighbours. I plan on living in Quebec, north of the st Laurent between or near Montreal and Trois Rivières. I’ll probably be looking at essentially a beefed up hobbyist garden for the first long while, maybe chickens, rabbits, ducks, and fishing in the streams for my proteins. But pork and maybe beef locally. Because of the shorter grow season I wanna experiment with hydroponics, but I won’t expect great results just mostly do it as a hobby thing. The land there is already cultivated, some of the oldest cultivated land in the area beyond First Nations cultivation, so fingers crossed maybe I’ll be able to buy an old abandoned farm for decent. Starting my own homestead from scratch in a swamp or wooded area will probably be beyond my abilities for sure
This would be an ideal I would love to attempt, but im too plugged into the matrix. Having the option to tell the world to go pound sand, even for a little while, and just stomp into the woods and hang with some chickens sounds more like a pipe dream.
Just got my first fiber internet last week. Here's the best part: Another cable company laid fiber to my camp in the swamp a year before AT&T hit my hood. There's a total of 900 souls out there, spread all over the place, and they buried fiber down our private, dirt roads, just to service a few dozen homes.
That's actually super awesome, because DSL is painful nowadays and satellite can get right the heck outta here blagh!
One time when I lived in NE Oklahoma where it was very hilly, we paid a super small ISP that was a couple dudes who'd put a line-of-sight receiver on your house and point it at their radio tower they rented space on.
Browsing was generally fine but downloading was so slow that, I'm not even kidding, it was faster and more convenient to have someone in a metro area across the country log into my Steam account and "back up" a few games to a USB drive I mailed them, and mail it back.
I did that job in NE OK! We'd hang units on water towers and the like with a line-of-sight device on the home. Sure wish I could remember the company, but it was 25+ years ago and didn't last.
Ha, cool! Small world! 😀
I think this little business was something like "Two Brothers" or something like that. They were in the Tahlequah / Park Hill region. :)
I am immensely thankful they were there, because otherwise the only other option was Hughesnet (immensely expensive and terrible) or dial-up.
So they were the only reason I had a mostly-reasonable connection to the outside world, despite that download speed cap. :p
Years of data hoarding. I got a couple terabytes of my favorite shows and movies, and a gigantic backlog of steam games. I own my house and car, only pay taxes and insurance. No family. Might take up body building again. I got a couple big bags of beans and lentils so protein isn't an issue. Also some big bags of rice and allot of fruit & veggie seeds from last season. I got replacement parts for most everything, a rain collection system that I only use to water my garden right now, but I also just got an air still so I can get water if data centers fuck up my local municipal supply. Small array of solar panels that I could add a battery system to.
Despite living right next to my downtown area, I'm already damn near off grid. If it gets really bad I might have to fence off my garden and/or move it next to my bedroom window.
same way we live now? ( m and f couple)
debt free
electricity cost is near $0 (have a solar systems that grid feeds surplus electricity we're paid for)
have an ecar and ebike we charge of said solar, so make our own fuel
live in a small rural community, lots of people DIY and grow their own food and swap/sell
have a free bus once a day to the nearby bigger city, use it on occasion for dentist/doctors appointments, or a day out in town
have a small acreage on the edge of town and get as much free beef as we want for letting the local farmer use it
have dozens of fruit trees around our house
my gf is a Chef who loves growing her own veg and fruit and cooks superb meals
have three years of expenses as cash
pay for water and local government taxes which is fine, get clean drinking water and the roads etc are repaired and we get a "free" library and "free" swimming pool out of it

There is no step 3
Probably The Winchester.
I’m already homeless and I’ve got an okay job. So I either I keep living like I do or things become too expensive and I die.
Probably getting a divorce, losing the kids and the dog, and getting blown up by a drone being piloted by a furry in the coming resource wars.
I pictured you from a battlefield camera drone POV and you are lugging a 5 gallon bucket of water through the rubble that used to be your neighborhood and suddenly a seeker death drone with furry cat ears whizzes overhead and drops a grenade. BLAM. Giant smoke cloud. A stream of water flows out from behind the dust cloud. Another brutal casualty of a filthy water hoarder. Serves you right for wanting to have drinking water.
I have a stable job I can't be fired from, frugal lifestyle and substantial savings. Can't say I'm particularly worried. 2008 didn't affect me in any meaningful way either. Even now my country has the highest rate of unemployment in the EU yet I've been overworked the whole summer.
Y'all have plans?
Keep working, reduce consumption of luxuries. I will still spend money, probably more than during good times. Because its important to keep spending so demand doesnt implode. I'll keep spending at my favourite restaurants, cafes and clubs because i want them to survive. My cost cutting will be on electronics and subscription services and things from overseas.
I'm going to take a massive dump!
one of three options
- woodwright
- nursing care
- electrician
if all those fail, I've got one more skill I can rely on.

I think I'm on the safe side, emplyment-wise. And if it turns out I'm wrong, I have a lot of contacts, so I don't think I'd stay unemployed very wrong.
My mortgage is on a fixed rate until 2032, so while financial adjustments won't be fun, they probably won't be devastating either.
Recession is the least of our problems
same as last one. die.
Do not spend money unless you really need those things. Live as a minimalist. It means some sort of isolation, but it is better than being homeless!
i wont be getting through it, but ill make sure that some of you guys do.
What if I just...don't? I didn't get through the last three, why should I get through this one?
Stable government job with a good salary is nice. I live with my parents and I'm saving up to get something on my own so expenses are very low.
Fortunate position so I think I will be okay.
Push more of my customers to prepay or to 3rd party financing.
To be honest my industry has been in a recession for 3 years already. A global recession that cuts the costs of inputs would be awesome.
Maybe change careers? My job will end soon and I'm looking for something more stable and values-aligned rather than exciting. I figure people need houses -Any structural engineers want to chime in on how to get into that work late?
I'm getting more interested in my core engineering physics understanding, such as electromagnetics and thermodynamics. I'm not sure how to "get into" that though, because every job I've seen requires over 5+ years of experience.
I think jobs like HVAC, electrician, plumbing, construction are all going to be increasingly more important. And I think career change is the only way to survive.
For those looking for more stable jobs, look into healthcare. Even short credential programs can result in livable wage jobs like LPN nursing or technician roles. The work may not be glamorous, but they're stable. If it's in the realm of possibility an associates or bachelor's degree in nursing is even better
pharm tech, if you need a better than min wage job, and doesnt require any schooling you can study on your own and take the test before the national test. not reccommend you spend time and money for a CC school or a state university(at our state they have 2-3month program accelerated but quite pricey at 1500$) the CC is much longer, 9months(cheaper but its praticallya year). you can do it cheaper (you just need to do all the legwork yourself, search on the subs they have the best info for this.
another is rad technologist, 2 years of schooling but you need to have prereqs(which can be done within 1 year). 2 paths: CC which has pretty horrible wait list times, not reccommended unless you planning to wait years. other is paying a university program upfront (expensive but not as expensive as a degree) and i heard people make back all the money back once they get the job after 2 year program(estimated cost for private uni program 30-60k for the whole thing), but the salary is quite high for not requiring a full degree. only stipulation is you would be studying for 2 years and might not be feasible if you work full time.
yea Full nurses can make 70-144+/hr as travelling nurses(depends on where you are) a coworker told me her cousins are nurses. it requires alot of schooling though.
I heard there's a nice peaceful forest in Japan I could visit for a little while.
A YouTuber reminded me that in the 80’s we were all told we would die in a firey radioactive blast from Russia or slowly for starvation as the smoke from millions of city sized fires chokes the sun out of photosynthesis entirely, so…. Stil planning on one of those.
plan? the last 2 people barely made it out or dint, jobs were getting scarcer in some industries for the last decade and the increasing reliance on jobs sites.
In 2008 I joined the Navy. Too old and broken for that now. My job likely won't be affected by a recession though, so all I gotta do is not get fired.
Support AI rights so that they not only can't be owned, but also, they have to be paid, thereby making human labor slightly more competitive again.
