Our existence is a refutation of the idea that the whole world aspires to be American. We speak the same language, eat the same food, play the same sports, and have more opportunity to voluntarily become American than any other group of people on Earth. The fact that we'd rather "Freeze in the Dark" than pledge allegiance to their flag contradicts the foundation of their ideology. Of course they hate us, because we are a threat to their national myth. This was inevitable. The question is, do we have the courage we need to respond to this threat?

Some of us do. I fear that far too many of my fellow Albertans are cowards who would rather squander our fiscal leadership whining than actually build a nation. The fawning over the boots of foreign owners is really sad. We were raised better than this. A fact we might remember if we hadn't accumulated the trash that washed out of every other province for decades now.

    We speak the same language

not really, we spell colour, and neighbour properly with a "u", and pronounce the letter "z" zed not zee. We also pronounce lieutenant leftenant not the incorrect loo-tenant. We also pour a Queen's Pint, I guess King's Pint now, not your pissy 16oz "pint"

I know, but a different dialect is still one language. We are mutually intelligible to each other. There's less variation between us than there is within the UK, so I don't think we can argue it isn't the same language even if they are sloppier with it.

Many, but I'm afraid you don't speak for all. There are plenty outside the cities that would be more than happy to hate us and everything we represent. It's why more than any other belief system, there's no one more hated by the religious than the apostate. The idea that "One of Us" can, in fact, live quite happily believing in something else entirely is a direct threat to your neighbours core identity and if God won't punish us directly for this heresy, then they will do it for him.

    play the same sports

    No we don't.

Canadian/American football became a gay sport here precisely because of the association with the US.

Football/soccer the reason anyone invested in it calls it football is because the Americans call it soccer.

We also don't eat the same food that's pretty self explanatory, and we speak French or the King's English.

There's nuance, but it's a distinction of degrees, not of kinds.

-Canadian football is actually more challenging than American football, but it's always had some... overtones.

-We call soccer football because the sport is called football. I was never entirely sure why they called the other game football since 95% of the time the ball is in your hands. They also have tried to learn hockey. It's very kind of all our best players to go down there and help them not embarrass themselves.

-We both have rather eclectic food tastes (a brown English gravy on cheese curds and fries? Les Parisiens sont choqués et alarmés), although I will grant we don't stick corn and/or corn syrup in everything and are less obsessed with tacos. We're rather fond of maple anything and a good donair is lovely though.

-Their Cajuns speak something vaguely resembling French (let's not get into the reason for that too deeply) and the rest of them speak something vaguely resembling English. It's not polite to make fun of them just because they can't spell or speak clearly, their education systems are deeply backward.

I've heard that American football is called football because it is played in feet and yards. not sure if that;s true, I don;t know anything about the game.

Cajuns are the decedents of Acadians who migrated to the US after Canada burned their villages in the great expulsion.

Shhh... we don't talk about the atrocities... the fact that "Cajun" is just "Acadian" said with a very heavy accent is a happy accident.

Remember the motto. "It's not a war crime the first time."

The same day, Michigan Rep. John James weighed in on social media with what he called a “FINAL WARNING TO CANADA.”

“Sovereignty comes with responsibility,” the Republican wrote, “and the responsibility to prevent a foreseeable disaster from crossing into another country’s airspace has not been met.”

The primary disaster that is crossing the border is the utter corruption of US politics. No need to foresee anything. It is happening right now, in Ottawa. It is happening right now in Alberta. If not stopped, it will destroy Canada as surely as it has destroyed the United States.

Albertan here, I'm pretty sure I've been yelling this from every soapbox I've had access to since Jason Kenney was Premier, at this point, feeling pretty hopeless that Alberta is gonna do anything to prevent a yes vote to separating. Even if they can't.

Sadly, too many take for granted what they have: don't understand or appreciate it. There are some very hard lessons coming. There are aspects of Canadian culture and government that all Canadians should be fiercely proud and defensive of, but the US is extremely experienced and effective at sowing discord and conflict: divide and conquer. Petty grievances will be played up, a few will have their vanity and greed played to, then the rug will be pulled and all will be lost.

They’re slowly laying the groundwork to say that Canada has lost the privilege of sovereignty and that their invasion is needed to save us. I have little doubt they’ll eventually find some silly reason to justify needing Canada because in American exceptionalism, they always deserve to get whatever their whims demand.

Gallup polling published in March shows Canada’s favourable rating among Republicans has fallen 23 points, from 85 per cent in 2025 to 62 per cent this year.

Thankfully in 2020 Trump said only once that people should inject bleach, or there would be a lot fewer Republicans around today. The stupidity of his voters is shocking.

You know how in sporting events, they shut it down for 30 minutes if there is lightning near the stadium, and every single bolt of lightning resets that clock?

America's "allies" need to do the same thing, except switch sporting event to "meaningful international commitments," minutes to "years," and bolt of lightning to "any GOP Administration."

I don’t think so, all the minions may be a little bit smarter than Il Douche but they all rely on his charisma and tv/movie fame. It is unlikely to be a competent government, my guess is all the leftovers will start fighting each other over the presidential powers

I think that was the case in 2017-2021, which was evident from the absolute shambles that administration spent most of its time in. There are some smart, evil people pulling the strings this time, which is evident from the ruthless efficiency with which they're working down their checklist of destruction and building their legion of terror, despite the actual President's rapid decline into dementia. Somebody is managing him, and they know exactly what they're using him for. I wouldn't count on the regime falling apart. I fear that they're smart enough to recruit a new, charismatic face when the time comes.

We need a new modality besides first/second/third world country. Developed/undeveloped doesn't even really work since most all countries (except the US who are backsliding) have made it through the demographic transition. Countries with stable social nets?

Yeah just wait until the US becomes the country other democracies like western nations are installing their own government in. That'll be an interesting time. So far the Trump administration has shown how inept they are from top to bottom, just feather his balls and hell roll over like a suckling pig.

Or they get under control of a power hungry nation like say Russia, imagine them with the power of the US military behind them?

Neither option great. Fucking assholes, the lot of them.

Let us citizens be in control. Not all communist per say but way more citizens than fat cats in government to appease. Hense why the government should be for the people not their own grifting schemes.

You are not sorry, your country voted for him twice.

There is no amount of apologies that will mend what YOUR little orange Mussolini has done.

I will never, ever step foot in your fascist country again.

Your country is THE rogue nation all your movies talk about; you are the world terrorists and always have been.

We have always been by your side for over 150 years even when you guys destabilized and overthrew many democratically elected countries we were there.

When you were attacked we said who did it and we sent our bravest.

Well no more, no more will we help because all you do is threaten.

Your country is a bully and always has been.

Hasan Piker is right about 9/11, you guys deserved it as a country.

You're kinda being a dick to someone who has been vocally anti-trump since he first dated a trump supporter in 2012. That's not a typo. Since Obama's reelection I've hated the guy and voted against him in every election. Don't blame me for him winning again.

There's a lot of blame to be pointed directly at Biden and Kamala's 2024 campaign for not reading the room and offering milquetoast promises.

If you don't want to come back here fine, you'd personally give Republican's ammo for their sudden hatred of Canadians and I would rather mend our two country's relationship.
