I am seeing more and more activity lately on !soulslike@lemmy.zip which is awesome.
Not one community specifically, but I really wish that communities about sports - specifically American football - were more active. I really miss that from the other place.
I am doing my best to get activity going on the nfl and lacrosse instances.
Keep it up. I don't much care about off-season news or anything, but I'll probably join the discussion when it comes to highlights and game threads. These upcoming seasons for each sport will play a big part in how active the community will be going forward I think. Unfortunately a bunch of traffic was dominated by the presidential election last year so other niche topics should gain more traction this year.
The NBA community (!nba@lemmy.world) is small but decently active. We had live game threads for the playoffs but it was like 5 people commenting lol. It was still fun though, and hopefully it grows more.
That's the one sub I'll still peek in now and then. Especially since my guys won it this year. Lol.
American exceptionalism strikes once again.
How? Because somebody likes something? That isnβt American exceptionalism.
I highlighted it because obviously you're extremely stupid:

How does liking gridiron football equate to believing the US is exemplary or better than other nations? Or maybe you think the definition of American exceptionalism is, βLikes something Americanβ. Calling people dumb because you donβt know what the fuck youβre talking about isnβt a good look.
Saying you want sports communities then hyper-focusing on American sports is exceptionalism.
There is a small percentage of the Lemmy population that is American, the great majority is European.
No one here cares for American football or the NFL. So why create a community? Because they think we care. Simple as. It's believing that Americans are at the centre of the universe once again π.
I assume you aren't engaging in good faith dialog here, given the immediate reach for disparaging remarks, but on the off chance you are, let me ask you this. If you asked somebody what their favorite whisky was, and they replied "Laphroaig", would that be a sign of Scottish nationalism or exceptionalism? Or if you asked their favorite cheese, and they gave "Gouda", a sign of Dutch exceptionalism?
Just because one's answer to "What community would you like to see more active..." is something that is from the US, this is not American Exceptionalism. The question wasn't, "What community do you think every Lemmy user should be required to participate in?" Nor was is, "What community is the best and most important on Lemmy?"
Clearly, at least one person here cares about it. Clearly that person isn't you. Everything you have written here is incorrect, and if you had any shame, you'd be embarrassed to have said it in public.
I think we need to get away from the short format brain rot media that is so popular today, like TikTok and Twitter/X. And light novels are familiar and approachable. Often, people have already seen the anime or seen the manga.
For that matter, even !manga@ani.social could use more activity, and manga is even more approachable than light novels.
I recently started reading a lot of the LNs that are on "catch up" at a website called j-novel club, and it's gotten me to enjoy reading novels more.
Also, the Ascendance of a Bookworm light novel is one of my favorite things I've ever read. It's a pretty long one at 33 volumes, though.
I went there hoping to discuss korean web novels and they don't allow it.
No idea why
No idea why
Because they are by definition different things. Close in style, sure, but so are YA novels.
Coming as a reddit refugee I just replicated their definition when creating the community. And I still feel the same way since it's not a general "novel" community. If there's a popular demand I'll loose the restrictions.
Thanks for the response.
Considering that Lemmy is still growing I'd hope there would be a place to discuss all light novels in one place.
About a year ago maybe I made a post and it was taken down due to not being a japanese web novel.
Regardless of style "web novel" and "light novel" aren't specific to a source country like manga and manwha are. So as a community restricting !lightnovels@ani.social to just japanese ones didn't make sense. You could've done jnovels instead.
You're doing it based off of writing style. You can make that call as a moderator but I just let it go and don't discuss my reading with anyone still after leaving reddit.
One day maybe enough people break the rule in a month to open it up.
Regardless of style βweb novelβ and βlight novelβ arenβt specific to a source country like manga and manwha are.
Both Wikipedia and Wiktionary define them as Japanese. The same goes for the original Reddit community or the database the bot (Myne) gets her info from. I did not take down your comment (it's still up) but pointed out that it's the wrong community for that reason. I didn't do it on a whim.
I'm not categorically against Korean (or Chinese) novels, but they're by every definition I know simply not "light novels". I believe that a general book community would be a better place to discuss other translated works. For reference, the place on Reddit to post Korean Webnovels would be r/noveltranslations instead of r/lightnovels.
Thank you for the clarification. I've always just searched TITLE light novel and it just comes right up when looking for the source of a graphic novel.
If I had the bandwidth I would start up novel translations myself, but alas my life is too busy to moderate and maintain it.
Thank you for your own efforts as a moderator and taking the time to clarify.
Edit:
I'm not good at using Lemmy search, but I figured out how to find my post here: Link
I found a discord server that was dedicated to the series I was talking about, but left it since I don't like my discord cluttered.
I read like 20 different stories across Korean and Japanese authors. The bulk keeps me distracted enough to not have spare time to chat. Although I miss having people to converse with.
I think we need to get away from the short format brain rot media that is so popular today, like TikTok and Twitter/X.
As Myne in the sidebar states: "Y'all better start reading more books!" :)
And she is noticeably not snobby about books. Myne would love to read light novels.
One problem that got me away from novels for a while was that I'd get ambitious and try to read something that was recommended but really wasn't for me.
One problem that got me away from novels for a while was that Iβd get ambitious and try to read something that was recommended but really wasnβt for me.
I would recommend to go with series that you liked the anime of and want to know how the story continues. It's not a 100% surefire way to find something you like, but at least you remove other people's taste from the equation.
We need more activity over there. I hope to make a post or two soon, but it's sad only seeing a couple new posts before seeing things from months ago. C'mon 3D artists!!! Where ya at?
Also:
- !blender@lemmy.ml
- !blender@lemm.ee (RIP)
- !blender@sopuli.xyz
- !blender_3D_animation@lemmy.ml
- !blenderanimation@programming.dev
- !blender@kbin.social (RIP)
- !blender_channel@video.blender.org
Perhaps some consolidation might be warranted here?
Wow, quite a few pages there, but they all have the same problem π not enough activity. C'mon Internet!
Would you consider making a consolidation post in !fedigrow@lemmy.zip?
We have a pinned guide with step-by-step instructions.
Yes i would, actually. Give me some time to read through that, and have something typed up :)π
I'll sub to that. Been meaning to get more in to blender
I'd like more discussion in stock market or economy communities.
Kind of wish the mass effect community was more active. NGL I kind of ended up hating the subreddit after awhile so no idea what to expect from folks on Lemmy but seems like it'd be better based on other communities I've joined.
I'd like to see a community for cool stuff happening in NYC.
I'd like to see more stuff for organizing protests and resistance, also for the NYC area.
I'm mildly proud of the fact that the Mini Apple has a more active community than the Big Apple, lol.
!MSP@midwest.social, and I'm like half of that activity and it's pretty dead. Make it, post, and maybe you'll have more luck, but local communities are tough given the small userbase.
(We also have a Democratic Socialist running for mayor, good luck to both Mamdani and Fateh!)
I know. Biggest city in the country but we barely connect with each other on Lemmy. Anywhere in particular other than !nyc@voxpop.social ?
I'm not aware of any NYC communities, even inactive ones, on the fediverse, though I haven't looked very hard. That link you provided errors out, if it's supposed to work.
!nyc@lemmy.world is probably the best bet
voxpop.social has shutdown
Lemmy already superseded my expectations with how active it is. That being said, I would love the following to see more action (although I'm mostly lurking there myself):
!nba@lemmy.world - Loved the discussions on Reddit. As a European, it's not easy to follow the games, so that was a great way to stay up to date.
!criticalrole@lemmy.world - Mostly carried by /u/Ultragramps@lemmy.blahaj.zone, whose updates are *chef's kiss*
!quackers@lemmy.world - No explanation needed.
This is great! I think the ones that get more subs will generally rise to the top and people will start congregating there.
I'm seeing a bunch of upvotes on peoples comments here. I'm hoping that those people are also subbing to the communities they see in here.
I'm gonna try to remember to post this kind of question maybe once a month and over time we'll get communities popping off.
most of them are on reddit, and probably unaware that lemmy exists, plus there are still medical based forums out there too. probably hard to see out of the 50k users, which one will ask a medical based issue.
I kinda wish weβd merge themβ¦ which I know goes against the grain of how the fediverse is supposed to operate.
Not necessarily:
One of the advantages of a decentralized platform like Lemmy is the ability to create parallel communities on the same topic. βYou donβt like how a community is being moderated? Go to another instance and start your own community!β (with or without blackjack and hookers)
However, this is a double-edged sword. The creation of multiple communities on the same (or similar) topics can also fragment the userbase, leading to very sparsely populated communities.
I think it only makes sense to have multiple communities on the same topic if each version serves a specific niche or has a unique moderation style. I think most of the examples you've given would be suitable for consolidation into two or three communities.
More info on consolidating communities in the pinned thread on !fedigrow@lemmy.zip.
What are your thoughts?
I'd love to see the !gamedev@programming.dev community be more active. As it is, the dev communities here are far more quiet than they were on reddit.
!DIYMentalHealth@lemmy.dbzer0.com
I'm trying to start a mental health support community that's skills based to hopefully help people who can't afford or otherwise access professional therapy.
Here's the wiki (the main page has a quickstart guide if you're looking for some things you can do today even just to maybe help stabilize yourself a little)
Here's a specific list of ways you can get involved with growing this community
Shameless self-promotion: !anniversaries@sopuli.xyz
It's like "On This Day", "This Day in History", etc. I'm currently the only poster but I don't mind, I enjoy regularly looking for interesting anniversaries.
Post anniversaries on any topic you feel like; even personal anniversaries are allowed!
Liberal gun owners. (Don't know how to link properly.)
https://old.lemmy.world/c/liberalgunowners
Such a great reddit community, or used to be. No toxic right-wing shit, just people showing off their builds and buys, asking questions, getting solid advice with no bullshit, talking laws and legal repercussions, linking timely news, loads of trans people posting. No judging! A new person could come in with the same damned question we'd covered 500 times. No problem! We'd all jump in and help.
Fuck I miss that place. It's dead here. Also, I think there are a few people that go in there solely to downvote. Don't know how to check logs, not interested enough to try, but it looks like assholes are trying to spoil it.
And FFS, NOW is the time left-minded Americans should be getting armed! Blacks, LGBTs and women have been the largest gun buying demographic for several years. They need help and they need a judgement free space to get it.
the sub probably blocks trolls. or deletes or bans them from the sub. alot of subs tend not to do it, so declines alot, hence the right wing push as the site as a whole. or it becomes too overzealous in moderation.
I was clear. I know it exists, it's just dead and again, seems like there are some downvoting every post out of spite.
I want to read more !shittymoviedetails@lemmy.world please!
I π want π more π girl π content π
To be clear - I am talking about stereotypically "female" subjects, not about the gender itself, and I hope it goes without saying that I want people of all genders to be part of it. Some topics over on reddit are full of guys, NBs, and everyone else, but are what a bigoted 90s teacher would call "female" topics. I want more stuff of what that 90s teacher would call "girly" stuff.
I mean, something like a makeup community. Maybe skincare and fashion. Cleaning tips. Pre and post and peri pregnancy content. The parenting community on lemmy is super quiet. There is a sewing community but it is rather quiet too. I haven't found a mending focused community yet. Boy there even isn't a sailor moon community, like π come on
I'm horrible in creating any content tho, so uhm, not sure I should be complaining.
Girl, you gotta post!.. Maybe this fits the bill ? !lemmy_stitch@sh.itjust.works
You can also rally up the gals over at
!womensstuff@piefed.blahaj.zone
Or !witchesvspatriarchy@lemmy.ca to start a periodic diacussion thread over those topics you propose? Or just post a thread and see how it goes?
Lastly... You are welcome to post in !artshare@lemmy.world I feel the userbase needs more women , so do a lil sketch and join us there!
Reddit allowed us to be ultra passive, but here contributing is almost mandatory, otherwise the communities just die...
https://leminal.space/c/Sidehustle. I seem to be the only one who joined after seeing it in new communities. I don't have much to contribute to it just yet as sonebody who wants to have a side hustle but isnt ready to start planning but i was hoping it might kick off with some discussions and info i could start absorbing from in the meantime.
I tried to go to it, but it came up with an error page.
Sorry im bad at lemmying still, !sidehustles@leminal.space does that work? Maybe the community already died and i can only see it through my local one?
DJs! I can't be the only one on Lemmy, but the community is completely dead.
!guitarporn@sfw.community is basically dead, though I am as guilty anyone of not posting more.
!reallyshittycopper@lemmy.world has seen some posts lately but I wish it was more active.
!autoracing@crazypeople.online for motorsports.
!autoracing@crazypeople.online for motorsports.
I've been working on a bot to help with serving content to that community but it isn't ready for deployment yet. Once it's finished there should be a lot more content being posted more regularly there, but I want to do more testing and tuning before enabling it to make sure it's not doing more harm than good.
Arab communities since we're such a small minority. I think the community with the most MAU is !arabs@lemmy.dbzer0.com but its still very small.
!cooking_with_fire@feddit.uk
!recipes@feddit.uk
!runequest_glorantha@feddit.uk
Basically the subs I mod. It would be awesome to see anyone new add content.
