Why consolidate communities?

One of the advantages of a decentralized platform like Lemmy is the ability to create parallel communities on the same topic. "You don't like how a community is being moderated? Go to another instance and start your own community!" (with or without blackjack and hookers)

However, this is a double-edged sword. The creation of multiple communities on the same (or similar) topics can also fragment the userbase, leading to very sparsely populated communities.

A few perspectives in favour of consolidation: (click to expand)https://sh.itjust.works/comment/11171955

I think until there’s some tool or system that helps collate all the information out here, fragmentation is detrimental to growth.

I’m not going to copy and paste the same comment with every mirrored post.

So sometimes commenting feels like a waste of time.

Centralizing helps ensure that there’s vibrant, consistent discussion which is what Lemmy should be about.

https://lemmy.ca/comment/8823953

I like this because people showing up to those communities might think that topic doesn’t have activity on Lemmy, when it actually does.

https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/comment/8370860

I sometimes think that unmoderated communities should be closed, and just be left and locked with a pointer to the active one. In case an issue arises with the active one, they can still be unlocked and used as back up.

How consolidate communities?

While consolidating communities can counteract userbase fragmentation, it is not an easy process for users to do, and so I thought I'd write up and share this guide.

Taking inspiration from @popcar2@programming.dev's excellent blogpost, let's imagine a hypothetical scenario where the pancake userbase on Lemmy is heavily fragmented, could benefit from consolidation.

Step 1: Identify duplicates

Search lemmyverse.net/communities for 'pancakes', as well as common synonyms (hotcake, griddlecake, flapjack). In our hypothetical scenario, we get the following search results:

  • !pancakes@lemmya.net (active)
  • !pancakes@lemmyb.net (inactive)
  • !pancakes@lemmy.food (active)
  • !flapjacks@lemmya.net (inactive)

Open each community on its home instance, note the frequency of posts, and check whether the moderators are active. From this, you will often get a hunch for what might be the best community to consolidate to. To avoid centralization on large instances, it is typically recommended to consolidate towards smaller instances, provided that they are well managed.

Step 2: Solicit input

Create a post on !fedigrow@lemmy.zip. The post should contain the following:

  1. A brief reminder on the detriments of userbase fragmentation and the advantages of consolidation.
  2. The list of duplicate communities you've identified for a given topic.
  3. An invitation for discussion and, optionally, your recommendation of a community to consolidate to.

Example post here (electric vehicles).

Once you have posted, create a top-level comment for each community in which you reach out to the moderators, administrators, and contributors for their opinions.

Example comments: (click to expand)

Paging !pancakes@lemmya.net active moderator @buckwheat_forever@lemmya.net

Would you be open to consolidating this community with one on another instance, perhaps !pancakes@lemmy.food?

Also paging active contributor @maple_syrup_or_die@lemmy.ca for their thoughts.

!pancakes@b.net moderator @spez_ruins_pancakes@lemmyb.net is inactive.

Paging admin @the_boss@lemmyb.net. Would you be open to consolidating this community with one on another instance, perhaps !pancakes@lemmy.food?

Paging !pancakes@lemmy.food moderator @cast_iron_queen@lemmy.food

How would you feel about a potential influx of posters and commenters from other instances? Would you be open to adding additional moderators, perhaps those who were active contributors or moderators in pancake communities on other instances?

These comments will hopefully spark discussion among the pancake enthusiasts on Lemmy.

There will often be users advocating for consolidation to whichever community currently has the most subscribers/activity. When this community is on of the larger instances, feel free to gently remind people of the risks of centralization.

If any two communities agree to consolidate, you can move onto step 3.

Step 3: Consolidate communities

When a decision is reached between any two communities, one community can then be closed, and redirect users to the other. You should recommend that the moderator take the following actions:

Example comment: (click to expand)

Would you be able to do the following?

  1. Lock !pancakes@b.net by checking "Only moderators can post to this community"
  2. Create one final post on !pancakes@b.net announcing the consolidation to !pancakes@lemmy.food
  3. Rename the community to "[Dormant] moved to !pancakes@lemmy.food"

Changing the community display name is particularly helpful for users when they are searching for communities.

When to NOT consolidate communities?

If there exist two active communities on the same topic, and they have a different significant difference in geographical focus, political leanings, or moderation style, these communities should not be consolidated. This would be an example of the advantages of parallel communities in the Fediverse.

TL;DR:

  • Find all the communities on a given topic (easy)
  • Convince people that consolidation is a good idea (medium)
  • Get people, many of whom may be reluctant to see a community on their home instance locked, to decide on which community to switch to (challenging)
  • Contact the moderators (or the admins, if the mods are inactive) of each of the n-1 communities and get them to lock each community, with appropriate links to the decided upon community (simple, but tedious)

It can be a bit of a pain-in-the-ass to do properly, and I've seen many more failures than successes, but given the potential benefit for the Fediverse as a whole, I thought I'd write up and share this guide. Feedback is welcome :)

Most instances have a community where users can request the moderator role for inactive or unmoderated communities.

As each instance names these slightly differently, I have created a thread to collect as many as possible.

Lemmy

Mbin

  • fedia.io
  • kbin.earth
  • kbin.melroy.org
  • moist.catsweat.com
  • feddit.xyz

PieFed

Please comment below with equivalent communities and I'll add them to the list.

Note: When requesting the moderator role for a community, it is best to do so from a local account (same instance as the community) rather than a remote account. Many people (myself included) have encountered federation issues with some moderation actions when using a remote account.

Follow up to this post from a couple years ago in light of the extended downtime of mander.xyz.

What space communities currently exist?

What astronomy communities currently exist?

Re: Community naming ("Space" vs. "Spaceflight" vs. "Astronomy")

I think that "space" is the most general term, with "astronomy" and "spaceflight" being subsets.

Examples:

  • Interesting data from a telescope? Astronomy and space, but not spaceflight.
  • A new GPS satellite is launched? Spaceflight and space, but not astronomy.
  • The Perseverance rover drills into a neat rock on Mars? Space, but not really astronomy or spaceflight.
  • A new space telescope is launched? Definitely all three.

Thoughts on which would be best to move to?

My votes would lean slightly towards !space@sopuli.xyz and !astronomy@lemmy.world, but I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

    4.4. Helpful Knowledge

1. Quick Overview - What is the Fediverse?
Fediverse: a collection of social networking services that communicate with each other using a common protocol (ActivityPub).

  • Relative Example (email): users of one email service such as Gmail can still send emails to users of another service such as Outlook. Likewise users on one instance of the Fediverse may still view content and interact with users on any other instance in the Fediverse.

Decentralized Structure: allows any individual or organization to host a Fediverse software using their own servers.

  • There is no form of centralized governance or moderation.

Instances: a server that runs a Fediverse software.

  • Every instance is independent, and can set its own rules and expectations.
  • Each Instance is run by an administrator/admin or a set of admins.

De-federation: Generally considered an option of last resort, where a select instance is removed from an instance’s allowed interaction list. Users can no longer see or interact with users or communities of the select instance. Visualization of Threadiverse Defederation.

Video (4min): Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media

2. Quick Overview - What is the Threadiverse?
Threadiverse: a collection of social news aggregation software that federate with one another.

  • Main Threadiverse software: Lemmy, Piefed, Mbin
  • Pylova: Piefed soft-fork with additional features
  • Catodon: "A Fediverse platform that combines the best of Mastodon, Misskey and Lemmy"

Text (110 categories): Differences between Threadiverse software (Lemmy vs Mbin vs Piefed)

3. Quick Overview - Communities
Community: user-created forums for discussion where users submit relevant posts with links, text, or pictures.

  • Each software may call its communities something different (Lemmy: sub-lemmy, Piefed: sub-pie, Mbin: magazine).
  • Communities are local to each instance, however users may subscribe to communities, create posts and leave comments across instances.
  • Each community is controlled by a moderator or a set of moderators. Admin have higher authority on the instance than moderators (can add and remove moderators).

4. Community Building
Community building is often difficult, which is why !fedigrow@lemmy.zip built this wiki to help.

4.1. Community Reach
Due to storage limitations, instances generally only retrieve posts and comments for communities that one of their users has subscribed to. This can severely limit the potential reach of your community.

  • !fedigrow@lemmy.zip sidebar has some links to help grow your community and increase post reach/federation (signed up instances will have a bot follow your community).
  • Cross-posts to a larger community, on another instance. I'd suggest spreading this out to not appear spammy (Piefed has grouped cross-posts, Lemmy and Mbin do not).

4.2. Sustainable Posting
Creating posts can often be difficult, time consuming, and if a post you spent a large amount of effort on doesn’t get a significant response, it can be demoralizing. One step to minimize that potential demoralization is posting sustainably.

  • If you have a dozen post-worthy images along the same theme, they don’t need to all be uploaded to Imgur or PixelFed, then collected in to a single post. Instead, they can be dribbled in to twelve different posts over time.
  • Utilizing past Reddit posts and their most useful user comments along with the image itself. Description, Example.

4.3. Getting Interactions/Comments
Depending on the person, the most rewarding part of posting can be the interaction with commenters.

  • Loads of people love to offer their opinions or jump in to correct or answer something, and those make for popular posts, too. Suggestion of types of posts: opinion requests, question-answer.
  • Post regularly (weekly or a few times a week) with cross-posts to a larger community to see if it gains the traction you are looking for. I’d suggest only 1 cross-post per post, so it doesn’t come across as spammy.

4.4. Helpful Knowledge
Linking to a community can be done a few ways, examples:

The goal of these posts is to identify community gaps that people want filled, but not to arbitrarily create communities to "fill those gaps". Instead put together teams that can/will work together to sustain their communities (many hands make light work).

To that end, I'm looking for anyone's input about potential communities (not necessarily to be created anytime soon). Some ideas about potential input (don't need to answer any or all the questions):

  • Is there an inactive community you would like to subscribe and/or post to? (No pressure to try and revive it)
  • Do you have an idea for a new community? (It would be helpful if you provide some detail about what the community would be focused on and what sort of posts it would contain)
  • Do you have a suggested community name? (Not required, but if you have an idea, feel free to share)
  • Do you have a suggested community instance/server? (Some servers have significantly different views on different topics)
  • Are you willing to be a community mod? (Not to pressure you, just to provide support, if indicated)

Discussion of a community building guide to be added to the sidebar has been suggested. Here is the current version. Let us know if you have any suggestions/additions/changes?

Started Communities:

Suggested Communities - Potential subscribers or active users:

  • Mahjong
    • missingno @fedia.io
  • Deer (images)
    • Auster @thebrainbin.org
  • Rooftops (pictures of rooftops, rooftop gardens, cozy rooftop spaces)
    • Potential subscribers: squirrel @cake.kobel.fyi, vicinus @piefed.zip
    • Potential cross-posting: !topview@lemmy.world
  • CottageIndustry (users can offer items they make for sale)
    • This idea probably needs some additional considerations (spam, payment, fraud, etc.) before actualizing. Some initial commentary here.
    • billionsandbillions @piefed.social
  • Theater (English language community)
    • 1517m4a @lemmy.pt

Suggested Feeds:

  • Hand&Eye (showcase anything made with your hands (only physical, nothing digital))
    • Examples: Woodworking, leathercraft, pottery, soap, candles, baskets, clothes, bookbinding, stained glass, glass blowing, bags etc.
    • billionsandbillions @piefed.social

Also, let us know if you have any suggestions about this community or post.

Edit: added potential cross-posting option for potential "Rooftops" community. Thanks Auster :)

Edit 2: missed the announcement of !space_astronomy@piefed.social in a previous post, added it to the post body.
Changed community building section and added link to current Community Building Wiki.

Edit 3: Added "Theater" to Suggested Communities

I've been tooling around with ideas for an "Obscure Games Club" community. Before making it I'd love to gauge interest, maybe get 1 or 2 people to commit to a certain level of involvement, and get feedback on the setup. But I don't actuallly know a good space to do that.

Most communities on the fedi are monuments to one passionate person talking to a brick wall, with the last post being sometime between 1 and 3 years ago. Perhaps less would peter out if the starting seed was more than one individual.

I can see problems with this idea. But I also see a lot of problems with the current way of doing things. It might be worth a shot.

Let's say I like to "adopt" an inactive Lemmy community representing a city that I have no association with, what are your thoughts if I decide to regularly post the latest news that I find, or interesting articles about it, in a regular basis?

Goal: I see these posts as a way to identify community gaps that people want filled, but not to arbitrarily create communities to "fill those gaps". I'm hoping that by creating a list of gaps and people interested in those gaps, we can put together teams that can/will work together to sustain their communities (many hands make light work).

My thinking is, once a number of people have indicated an interest in a particular topic, I can reach out to them (or they can initiate discussions themselves) and see if they are willing to start or revive a particular community. If not, no worries/no pressure.

Updates from Last Week:
Discussion of a working guide to be added to the sidebar has been suggested. It's been confirmed that Piefed has the functionality for each community to have its own wiki (thanks Blaze @piefed.zip).

The guide could contain:

  • On-boarding/quick breakdown of the threadiverse with relevant terms
  • Demographics. Know demographic sets: Fedecan 2025, Lemmy.nz 2025, Any others?
  • Suggestion of types of posts (ex. opinion requests, question-answer)
  • Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions JohnnyEnzyme @piefed.social
