I have no idea who the person on the left is

She had a severe case of postpartum psychoses and killed her kids. Went to trial and was found not guilty by every juror except a woman hating wife beater even though he admitted to having reasonable doubt, which lead to a mistrail.

It's a very shitty meme that makes fun of a woman's tragedy.

A woman's tragedy? The fuck? She strangled her three children to death. I don't give a shit what circumstances led to it. The tragedy is the kids who were murdered and everyone who knew and loved them.

It's terrible that she couldn't get the help she needed. That doesn't make her the victim.

It’s terrible that she couldn’t get the help she needed.

Yeah, funny thing about that: per the Wikipedia article on the case, there were no fewer than three attempts at inpatient care for her, one discharged her, one she refused and the third she checked herself out of.

Multiple doctors passed her around and all tried to prescribe her different medicines without coordinating with one another, and none of them really took her postpartum depression symptoms as seriously as they should have.

If you had a heart attack while driving and so got into an accident and your children in the car were killed but you survived, are you a victim?

That's not what happened. She committed premeditated murder, with advance planning.

She had a medical condition that caused it. Just because you've never had such a condition doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The world is bigger than your experience. If you can imagine yourself having a heart attack forcing your body to stop driving and kill your kids, why can't you imagine yourself with a mental illness that forces you to do terrible things?

I didn't know a medical condition can cause you to wait till your husband is out of the house to kill your 3 children

Well, apparently that's what a jury overwhelmingly found. So it seems many people can fathom such a medical condition.

For clarity, you’re saying it’s not possible for women to be unbiased in the trial of a woman? Why is a man inherently unbiased?

Yeaaa, like, the level of premeditation and reasoning is incompatible with a mental illness like that.

But hey, she's a woman, and women can't be bad nor commit any crimes, they're always victims and men are always criminals, yk, totally common sense.

I'd love to see the reactions if she were a male and not a female.

Your take is what, mental illness sufficient to cause someone to kill their kids is possible, and when it occurs it...is always also powerful and far-reaching enough to always degrade the ability to accomplish it? And/or being able to plan and accomplish it means they couldn't have been fucked up heavily enough for mental illness to cause it?

I understand feeling strongly about the case, but that position is shallow and doesn't add up. I've seen people undergoing psychotic breaks and heard about many more than I've seen. They can obviously plan and accomplish things, that's kinda the whole problem for everyone else, where their internal wtf becomes external. And unlike merely drug-induced psychotic states, it doesn't just fade with the dose, it dwells and lingers and festers and can become inescapable without help.

The things folks in that state can accomplish make no sense outside of their head, and shouldn't be accomplished, but they don't magically turn into a mush that can't keep an idea coherent and "pull it off". (Bad) Ideas remaining too coherent and consistent is kinda the whole problem? Your insistence of otherwise kinda reveals your lack of experience with the whole shebang, just being honest.

I've lived myself with psychotic breaks all my life (I'm ADHD, autistic and bipolar, these three things cause strong problems with emotional regulation), I know what I'm talking about because I have to live with 6 fucking chronical meds because of that.

I can tell you that one can't do a plan that complex in that state. And when one's calm, obviously that's something that won't be even thought if you're a good person.

One can still act and do terrible things, yeah, but it's more sort of instinctive and primal, reactive I'd say.

  • I certainly don't want to minimize your own experiences and learning from them. But, it's a huge stretch to then claim that what you've learned necessarily and reliably generalizes to all other experiences. It doesn't follow.

We know that sometimes people can lose touch with reality and yet still make plans and carry them out. Stated that way it seems too abundantly true (to me) to bicker much about. Sounds like we just aren't going to see it the same way probably.

If you were having a heart attack and deliberately accelerated and aimed your car at a group of people on the sidewalk, then you are both the victim of a heart attack and a murderer.
Mental illness should affect where you are incarcerated and the type of treatment you get, but it doesn't mean that you get a free pass.
The US's handling of incarcerated people, especially the mentally ill, is gross and malicious, but this is the choice that the voters have made. That desperately needs to be fixed, but setting a murderer free is not helping.

Also, it's really grotesque that stealing to feed your children, or sneaking across borders to give them a better life is worthy of jail time if you aren't white, but if you are white then premeditated murder of your own children makes you a hero.

No. That's entirely not the point. If you have a heart attack and so your body forces you to fall unconscious and so you get in an accident and kill your children, are you guilty? Obviously you need medical attention and cannot be allowed to drive while there is any significant chance that you might do it again.
Nobody is suggesting that this woman should be set free - she needs to be in a secure mental treatment facility until she is safe to be in society - and possibly that will never happen.
This has nothing to do with those other issues or skin color. It is about mental health, women's support and post partum care.
If you can't wrap your head around the mental illness cause part because you have no empathy or ability to understand things you haven't experienced, maybe think about how one's mind can be altered with drugs/alchohol, or how hypnotism can make people do complex weird things. Our brains are a very complex chemical system and can get out of whack causing surprising results. Post partum mental illness is much more common than most people believe because of the stigma and covering it up. It needs a lot more understanding and accommodation - that recognition and support would help avoid such tragedies as this case. Your inability to understand and empathize will only make things worse.

She may have lied when she 'admitted it'. She hasn't been found guilty in a court of law. It's still only 'allegedly'.

    She admitted it in court.

Not being found guilty for it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

If you're at a carnival where one of the games is throwing axes at a board. And somehow a child suddenly teleported in front of the board after throwing the axe, you might not be guilty for it. But you still killed the kid.

Definitely killed her kids. Allegedly insane enough to not be able to be found guilty (which would still wind up with her locked up). And it was the state's burden to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she was sane enough to be found guilty. That's what the jury needed to deliberate and come to a consensus on, but didn't quite.

She killed her kids and has been in a very high-profile murder trial. 11 of the 12 jurors wanted to find her not guilty due to her mental state, but the last one held out and there was a mistrial. There's some other stuff going around about the holdout juror and it's a huge fucking mess, and we don't yet know what's happening next. There's a hearing tomorrow that's gonna be a shitshow.

While I generally agree with criticism of the "white woman true crime tragedy porn" stuff, the legal case here actually is pretty interesting. There is a legitimate debate over culpability due to mental state and the jury situation is a little bonkers.

I'd say i'm 3-4, i can tolerate kids but i find them annoying.

I have a daughter and step daughter and while both were calm and sweet when they were younger the teen disease seems to have changed one of them and the other one is on her way.

Step daughter turned 15 a few months ago and for the past 2 years i'd say she's becoming a bigger foul-mouthed asshole than i thought possible and daughter will turn 10 in a few months and i'm just waiting for the outbursts to start.

Kids don't deserve to be raped or murdered but they are ungrateful assholes that think money grows on trees.

If you must know i spent 4 years without power or running water 1991-1995 due to a war.

My father never really contributed to the household before or after the war and 1997 my parents separated.

After my mother remarried she and my stepdad were taking loans left and right until everything went to shit and we didn't have food, running water or power.

While everything is stable now my childhood wasn't "puppies and rainbows".

So have your presumptions if it makes you feel better about yourself.

Im not sure how to say this but if your daughters grown up to be "ungrateful assholes" that is partially on you. Not all of it. Try to get it through how is your financial situation is. A 15 year old can understand way more than we give them credit for. If they think you are in the same team, they will look things from your perspective more. Saying how you grown up is not something they can relate to, they didn't experienced that personaly.

I like kids, and value getting to be a grandpa for a boy from four to ten (then he became a basketball star and didn't visit much).

But I feel sorry for the alphas and betas. In fact, I feel sorry for zoomers, who I've watched grow up. And millennials got a raw deal too.

We don't know which catastrophic existential risk is going to manifest, as we're working on several. But one is, and the aftermath is going to be an ordeal.

Needless to say, I'm anti-natalist. I think bringing new life into the world right now is a disservice to them.

My concerns about catastrophic existential risk are descriptive, not prescriptive

I didn't have kids. Okay, I had a son, but was separated from him at birth. I married into a family around fifty, and thanks to the troubled economy, the millennial daughter moved in with us, and brought her son.

But it sounds like you think of kids as a means of fulfillment for the parents, rather than autonomous persons of their own. I see that a lot, in our children's welfare policies, in our attitudes towards education and juvenile crime, in society's complete disinterested in making society accessible to future generations.

And zoomers and alphas are not feeling the love. The fertility rate in the US dropped below 1.6, which scares the snot out of our owner class. And they've cut off immigration, which we've depended on for decades to increase our numbers.

The silent generation was also conspicuously small. Three guesses as to why.
