Shell gas stations in the US have been showing ads on the main machine for years, I've never seen them on the handle before. I hate it. I would expect them to break "accidentally" quite often.

Fun fact for most of these on-pump advertisements: if you see eight buttons in two columns, hitting the third row(?) second column button should mute the speaker.

Fuck these abominations, fuck the oil industry, fuck the advertising industry, and fuck the snack and beverage companies that advertise their poison on these devices.

Where I am it was the second down on the right side, but recently the button to mute stopped working around where I live. I have a friend who just sticks his keys through the the speaker grates to kill the speakers lol

To anybody thinking about vandalizing this thing:

DONT BREAK IT, not the screen, not the speakers and none of its electronics, you can create a shortcut, then a spark and YOU WILL KILL YOURSELF or the next person that uses the pump.

Paint and stickers are the way to go.

The likelihood that you get any kind of meaningful arc from puncturing a speaker is almost none, theyre not gonna drive those speakers with high voltage. Especially improbable since you're likely just destroying the speaker diaphragm, so an arc may not even be feasible from the type of damage done.

When myth busters tested whether cell phones, and then arcing (like from static discharge) would blow you up at the gas station, they had to use a large continuous arc from a neon sign transformer (extremely high voltage) and a sealed box full of the ideal fuel to air ratio of gasoline vapors to get an explosion.

Puncturing a speaker isnt unlikely to ever have to have either of those things. You're unlikely to get an arc, and there should be like a zero percent chance of a meaningful build up of fuel vapors in an open air setting where the vapors have to make out of the narrow choke of the fuel tank opening, where the nozzle and its rubber splash guard thing are blocking its route, and all the way to where the speaker is

Do you by any chance have any experience working with electricity to back up your concerns?

Sure buddy, handle one of those with a cigarette and see what happens. (/s fucking dont)

Do you by any chance have any experience working with electricity to back up your concerns?

I have diplomas on the subject, professional experience and training, yes. Engineering regulations are written on blood and cemeteries are full of smart asses that dont follow them, that all I have to say.

While I feel theres a slight difference between a lit cigarette while operating a gas pump, and the possible spark from breaking the diaphragm in a low voltage speaker behind grates in the pump body- you know what fair enough. Usually when I see or participate in folks talking about electricity dangers online its folks who have no clue what theyre talking about.

A couple of months ago I was in an argument with folks on lemmy who thought if you put a nine volt battery against your nipple it'd electrocute you. At one point I went and grabbed a nine volt to take a picture of literally pressed against my skin just to prove my point 😅. A lot of folks seem to mythologize electricity and its dangers, sometimes it even seems to come from folks claiming to have electrical work backgrounds or engineering degrees

Regardless, hope you have a good day, take care :)

You wouldn't likely see it on the handle in the US because it's uncommon to hold the handle. Most people prop the catch so that it stays running on its own.

This seems insane to me. You cannot latch the handle to continue dispensing, without actively holding it in Australia (and I imagine most countries?)

Seems insane because it's removing a layer of protection (you, noticing the automatic shut off mechanism isn't working) for barely any benefit.

Though, I don't know the statistics on how much this contributes to extra spills or fires.

Reminds me of the company that did smart coolers for gas station coolers. It cost thousands of dollars and required proprietary service for this display. Idk if anyone is bankrupt but the company that made them essentially stopped supporting them so has stations have worthless screens blocking the merchandise

I saw a bunch of those cooler displays just showing errors/blue screens.

I refuse to look at them anyway and just stand there holding the door open while I browse/decide what I want. They can pay to cool and then re-heat the room ontop of the power costs for those displays.

I'm usually not in favor of this sort of thing. But I think there are some instances where that may be justified. This screen serves ZERO public benefit. It's just there to annoy you. So IMHO doing something like 3d printing a cover that you leave on the screen is a public service.

The question is not whether they support a business model, it's whether they are good for humanity. And they are bad for humanity from a socioeconomic perspective because it is labor power spent with negative net use value produced.

Compare it with imperialist wars: they are the business model of the entire MIC, and yet I hope you agree that wars of aggression are bad.

Or we could do the sensible thing and make a few taxpayer-funded news agencies, same as with the rest of public services. UK, Canada and Australia have public broadcasters, and while fundamentally they are still tools of imperialist propaganda they are usually more accurate with their reporting and truthful with their journalism than the billionaire-owned ad-ridden slop.

The rest could then be funded through a mix of grants, subscriptions and volunteers.

Continuing with the MIC/wars analogy: "without MIC and wars to fund it we wouldn't have done the research for transistors/ICs/microwaves/radar/...". It's obviously a false dichotomy designed to normalize wars of aggression. It's the same here, brainworm slop and paid slop are not the only two alternatives.

The government broadcaster would not work in the United States period It's bad enough in the UK and Canada comma although I like their public broadcasters to a degree Comma with their Israel bullshit though, and that is just the start. In this country? It would be a fucking nightmare. They would appoint like Fox News producers to lead it.

The principle in the UK is almost sound. Take taxpayer money and give it to an NGO. Though they do it through a separate "licence" company which is a parasite, the original idea was so it could demonstrate at all levels it was independent of government interference. Rather like US democracy, it hasn't worked out as well as it should have, but that doesn't mean it's not a reasonable idea in the future.

The US still does have an OK "public broadcaster" - PBS (even though it's mostly not known for "news"). It wasn't run by Fox News hosts either, it produced some fairly progressive or at least pro-scientific content. However it is getting destroyed right now, precisely because it doesn't fit the agenda of the current government.

The only solution to this is aligning the government with the people. I'm afraid revolution is the only way to do this (although there is a tiny sliver of hope that it can be resolved without too much violence). Until then ad-"supported" news won't save you, because they are all fundamentally capitalist. Iskra didn't have ads in it.

As someone who does slaps, I'm no stranger to the idea of temporariness nor do I really try to combat it. My work sticks around then disappears, as I will eventually myself. As for the obsession of not getting buffed who knows, likely born out of the gang affiliated side of graffiti, same boneheads who fight people physically over turf, etc.. But since we were discussing obstructive protest I think it's worth a mention. Speaking of which - don't get a weed sprayer off of Craigslist and fill it full of paint, that sort of thing could lead to no good.

This was reported but I don't think it warrants censorship.

If you're taking this more seriously than it should be, just keep in mind that there will likely be legal consequences since gas stations frequently have plenty of cameras and ask yourself if this hill is worth dying on. You'll get charged and they'll just replace the damn things anyways.

    Worse in California.

I've been to multiple stations that have speakers on the pump and start blaring ads as soon as a credit card is inserted. Most of them have had "Mute" buttons on the pump, but the last one I went to did not and there was no way to silence the screaming advertisement. Will never go back.

Often times you can press one of the buttons to mute it, although apparently some pumps have decided you're not allowed to decide when you want to hear your own thoughts. Just start pushing the buttons on either side of the screen, chances are one of them will shut it up.

Every car at a gas station has an exhaust system with temperatures well over the ignition point of gasoline. If there was a problem we would have to let our cars tool for half an hour a quarter mile away from the pumps before we pushed them there by hand.

fortunately gasoline only burns in a narrow range of mixtures which are impossible to get in open air.

The concentration of vapours matters. It is still best to not be smoking above the nozzle (even if it's unlikely to be a problem), and any embers or flames touching a small stream of it are still a problem. The safety precautions are over the top because the consequences if it goes kaboom are pretty terrible.

Next level : if you want it to fill your tank fast & ad free, you have to subscribe to a monthly card-club with Facial-Recognition, otherwise it keeps showing you ads & it fills your gas tank reeeeeally sloooOOOOoowly to make sure you watch at least 5 ads ^^

If you try to close the ad then the hose sucks the gasoline out of your tank but still charges you for the amount pumped. Also good luck getting the right fuel for your engine, the pump selection system has been replaced with a gacha game. Try again and maybe next time you'll get Diesel-chan!
