The main outcome from this is that it forces the companies to not out-source the development/maintenance/support to AI. If they do, they are literally no different from just self-hosting this and asking your own LLM for help, which is going to be cheaper.

As usual, automation actually reduces the rate of profit in the long run.

This is probably the most realistic goal of the movement.

But in all seriousness, they’re still unmaintaible slop

They are definitely more user-friendly and community-maintainable than the closed-source originals.

Originals are either binaries you can't modify, or completely black-box inaccessible software someone else runs which you only interact with.

Having some source code which does almost the same thing, even if it's buggy, is much better than having nothing at all.

Of course AI has its own issues and the resulting software is pretty bad. It is a great starting point to be improved tho.

IIRC there were a couple of nazi instances that were instantly defederated by everyone except each other. But I'm pretty sure they are both dead now. Good.

Lemmy is like many tiny Reddits called instances. You barely realise you switch from one to another while browsing happily expect for “instance nationalism”. It is smaller but more humane. That’s about all you need to start.

I measure battery capacity and electricity consumption in J/kJ/MJ, as intended. None of that kWh bullshit.

It also makes for fun comparison with energy value of foods.

    Energy is energy, after all.

I liked posting a picture here so I think I will try to do it weekly :)

This is what the dawn of January 1st 2025 looked like for me. We've slept in my van through the night to get this view. The temperature was about -20℃ but it was worth it in the end.

The flats in the picture is the frozen Lake Paravani and the mountains are the Samsari ridge.
