The Canadian government is preparing to give away Canadians’ digital lives—to U.S. police, to the Donald Trump administration, and possibly to foreign spy agencies.

Not only is this a terrible bill, but the timing of it is especially telling. We're in a fight for our sovereignty and he wants to hand our data over to the people threatening us.

This isn’t speculation. Earlier this month, a Canadian government official told Politico that this surveillance regime would give Canadian police “the same kind of toolkit” that their U.S. counterparts have under the PATRIOT Act and FISA. The bill allows for “technical capability orders.” Those orders mean the government can force Canadian tech companies, VPNs, cloud providers, and app developers—regardless of where in the world they are based—to build surveillance tools into their products.

Under U.S. law, non-U.S. persons have little protection from foreign surveillance. If U.S. cops want information on abortion access, gender-affirming care, or political protests happening in Canada—they’re going to get it. The data-sharing won’t necessarily be limited to the U.S., either. There’s nothing to stop authoritarian states from demanding this new trove of Canadians’ private data that will be secretly doled out by its law enforcement agencies.

This bill is being introduced by a minister that the pm hand picked himself. Mark Carney is selling out Canadians!

I think many of us have forgotten that Harper signed an agreement with the US in 2012 (that took effect on January 17, 2025) where "... the automated exchange of biographical and biometric information on permanent residents of both Canada and the United States" is now shared.

Bill C-2 is simply part 2 of Harper's continued bullshit legacy that continues to haunt us years later.

Personally my reaction to most of C-2 is mild disappointment, but Part 15 is extremely concerning to me.

Once the VPN has tracking for law enforcement or the government the VPN is trash. Privacy is bullshit and it doesn't actually prevent you from being spied on if they wanted too. I should be able to protect myself from the government especially considering all of the countries now are enshittifying themselves.

media isnt covering this at all like they should be. the fact that all we hear about it "Carney owning trump" when hes literally planning on screwing our constitutional right to privacy, and giving that information to literally the worst possible fascist rapist, whos planning on economically annexing us is suspicious to say the least.

once this pandoras box is opened, theres no closing it. he just wrote an executive order saying they are going to arrest homeless people and whoever they classify as "mentally ill" which will include people who are LGBTQ+ and have ADHD and autism, and anyone who doesnt agree with him politically because they have "trump derangement syndrome" which they are trying to classify as a mental illness as we speak.

now imagine if in the future trump or the US do end up annexing us, or at least demanding who they deem a threat from our side of border to be charged in the US. they could literally take homeless people and the "mentally ill" or anyone they deem a "threat" and ship them over to put them in fucking work camps. now with our online profile fully in view of the US, and palantir (FOREVER), they could demand "domestic threats" be sent over. removing would be resistors to the trump regime take over, before they want to annex us for good. and classify them as mentally ill, and then force them to work as slaves in their work camps, or worse. JUST LIKE STALIN DID WITH HITLER BEFORE THEY ENDED UP GOING TO WAR.

even if thats not what they are planning, they could use our data to create extremely targeted misinformation campaigns and have canadians continue to vote against their interests in the future.

i hope my tinfoil hat isnt too tight on my head, but fuck me what the hell, this is a national security A BOMB going off in our own legislation by our own government. that we specifically elected to FIGHT THIS DICKWAD. not hand us over on a silver platter.

theres zero benefit to this bill for canadians, ZERO.

we dont want this, most dont even know about it. they are far too busy comparing Carney to PP in "what ifs" (fuck him too, btw) the liberals got hoodwinked into a conservative government that claims its center left.

they are claimings its due to the american threat and the threat of other internationals, hence why its shoved into the "strong borders act"

they are using fear of immigrants, again, to take away our rights.

Same as in the UK. People vote against the genuinely terrible Conservatives only to end up with a different authoritarian neoliberal government. This is a class war, but most people don't realize it.

that's some insane "I used the US overreach to stop US overreach" logic. I'm sorry we seem to have transmitted our retardation to your most impressionable voters.

Wait also, people who want strong borders in Canada. Is that to keep out American immigrants, who are also known for our xenophobia and populism? Because we have this similar thing going on with Hispanics where the people who want to keep them from immigrating north happen to have the exact same cultural values as the people they're trying to keep out. It would be funny if this was just like a Jacob's Ladder of immigration anxieties

its part of it. to make a very complex issue short. (mainly) conservative premiers wanted cheap labour during covid because most of us were in lockdown, we also have an ageing population and low birth rate. and they wanted business to function and grow, supplemented by a foreign workforce. they petitioned the fed to let more immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, temp workers and students in to fill the gaps, going so far as to lie about their ability to house them efficiently. fed delivered. it pumped the economy, available housing shrunk, wages stagnated. when we recovered post covid. conservatives started blaming the fed as if it was all their plan the whole time when the cracks started showing, taking zero responsibility. this is the main reason why trudeau, our former PM was so unpopular. eventually he quit, passed it off to Carney who eventually was elected over populist maple maga PP, because he said he would fight trump. the NDP (further left than the liberals) shrunk to unofficial party status (losing federal funding) because "Carney was our best shot" and now we have a functionally two party system as a result. Carneys politics as a "center left liberal" also shifted the overton window further right.

hes a banker, and is the richest PM in canadian history, and is currently passing laws for "nation building projects" that allow big business to step over first nations rights, and citizens rights as well (bill c-5). building things like cross provincial pipelines that further push us towards climate collapse. because neoliberalism demands environmental sacrifice at the altar of profit and the fairytail of infinite growth.

Carney is merely another puppet of the international oligarch elite, put in place to smash and grab resources and our rights, before class conciousness can rear its head and destroy the status quo, and systems of capitalism that aim to destroy democracy and the planet. he put his stock holdings in a "blind trust" as a show of good faith, but is actively invested in american corps and holdings, and the trust, isnt entirely blind. meaning he can change policy to enrich himself and friends further.

his smiles and winks are supposed to trick us into thinking he has some grandmaster plan up his sleeve to deal with trump. but he and virtually every other politician alive never represent the will of the people, just the will of the elite. its a big fucking show.

for the record. PP is a cunt. Carney is cunt lite with a smile and a (now slightly lowered) rainbow flag.

ive never been more dissapointed in a prime minister in my life.

he was supposed to help us. now he dooms us all for a spot in the bunker.

edit: just to add on to this, i feel just as bad for the immigrants who were lied to about the opportunities canada offered. we turned doctors and engineers into what are essentially wage slaves. and they are now a political tool whos dream of a better life lies on the whims of corrupted algorithm that dictates the thoughts of the masses.

Cool. So, all they have to do in order to pass it, is suspend the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. No problem.

Civil liberties groups, refugee advocates, lawyers, Amnesty International, Oxfam, the United Church, PEN Canada, CUPE, Canadian Anti-Hate Network, the YWCA, Citizen Lab — and now the EFF. The diversity and the sheer number of civil society groups and NGOs that find C-2 absolutely unacceptable is unprecedented to my knowledge. If it comes anywhere near passing into law it will be a travesty of government.

Took a quick look for coverage in various news outlets, but it seems like they're glossing over the breach of privacy and focusing on keeping the border safe lol.

Either that or I suck at looking for coverage in mainstream media. Most of what I found was from June

So we have the EU and their bullshit (which also has global scope), we have credit card processors and their bullshit, now we have Canada and some.of their own bullshit.

On one hand, we have been talking about the potential for full surveillance across the internet for a while, so this is hardly a surprise, but everyone all at once? What the hell is behind this new massive push?

It seems that the response to this will be a lot of services moving to countries that dont give a shit about us/EU laws and a rise in cryptocurrencies. It will take a while before the common folks to get pissed enough to figure it out, but all things have limits.

I presume there will be a patchwork of country-level blocks put into place, VPN blocks, tor filtering etc. This feels like the end of the open internet as we know it. It has been a greed fueled mess for a long time now, but this round of government invasion feels like the final knife in the chest.

It will suck for users, it will be expensive for any company to maintain compliance, it will be horribly complex from a technology perspective if any of these layers break and it will be a goddamn nightmare to secure. Organized crime hackers are going to have a field day once they get access to all the stuff being monitored and logged. Encryption backdoors will take it to a whole new level.

This bill has me finally thinking about getting a VPN. Then I thought, which country would I send my traffic to, anyways? Seems many are going squirrelly at the moment, and it will only get worse over time.

Might need to start finding onion sites to chat on, like old forum styles, and onion high seas etc.

The wealthy are scared and they are directing their minions to implement this.

You see things like this more and more, when the housing market in Canada really started shifting and climbing in costs, the same systems were put in place in the UK and in Aus, NZ. To me it seemed too coordinated, is the same everytime one of the 5 eyes starts something and tries to make it seem like it's to "protect the children" or whatever.

They are so scared of the people riding up against the ultra wealthy, this is why it is being done. It is a coordinated effort, they debt it and try to pretend they are being strong against the TACO regime, but that is only a show for their citizens, when really they're putting all of this in place. They know their in trouble with all the lies and theft affairs their people, most likely mass layoffs are coming in the next few years and they want to be able to have a nice big list of names of who to go after.

The entire political systems globally need to change to allow everyone to have a decent standard of living.
