Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

I guess the demand for wheeled dumpsters wasn't as high as they thought.

For $120K you can buy a vehicle that's an actual car, not a meme gag peddled by a wannabe fascist who wants to fuck children but was so cringe the rest of pedoes didn't want him in rape island.

I’d take one and angle grind the whole body off to replace it with a classic truck or big old caddy or something.

An EV el Camino would be pretty rad.

The rear steering would be a pain to work around though, and with the shitty dash and steering wheel.

Fortunately they are so terrible and Tesla is so terrible at providing parts that these will all be off the road within a few years.

I legit thought i was the only person who did this! A guy near my office owns one and started to recognize me in my lesser ev and now it’s a race to see if i can point and laugh before he flips me off. Now i change it up on him and shake my head at him while wearing the biggest, shit eating grin.

Maybe it’s petty of me. Or maybe we need to bring public shaming back to counteract the Elmo brainworm all these sycophants have🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm kind of surprised at how many of them I see. I'm not sure it's just that they stand out so much or if I live in an area (Southern California) where they're more popular, but they're so awful in person that it's hard to get my head around.

Norcal here. I see them kinda frequently. But we live in the most populous state in the nation and there's a lot of people here with funny money. I'm sure they're much rarer in other parts of the country. Definitely gonna be rarer now, lolz.

Why on Earth would someone design a cab to only seat two people? The only time in the last two years that I’ve used a cab, it was to travel with a group.

The best guess I can figure is that an insufferable loser like Elon can’t fathom having two or more people that want to be in the same car as him.

80% of all taxi rides are 2 or less people.

They also have the model y which can do 5 people.

  • [–] 4 points 10 hours ago (1 child)

It feels like there's a big gap between the cab and the y. Would a self driving 3 (which can fit 5 people and they already have factories to build 90%+ of) not make way more sense?

  • source
  • parent
  • hideshow 1 child comment
  • [–] 2 points 10 hours ago

They built more capacity for the Y as it's a better selling vehicle, and if you already have a small car for the 1 and 2 people trips, using something bigger with more storage for the 3-5 people trips does make sense. I'm sure 3s will eventually end up in it though even if it's just a way to balance factory output. Like if the 3 is selling less in a quarter and the factory is idling more, maybe adding some 3s to the robotaxi fleet instead of y's that quarter begins to make sense?

  • source
  • parent
  • [–] 4 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

And the model y can also do two people.

So again, why focus so hard on a two seater?

  • source
  • parent
  • hideshow 3 child comments
  • [–] 3 points 11 hours ago* (2 children)

The Model Y costs substantially more to build, is more complicated to repair and costs more to run per mile.

When only 1/5 rides need that, it's cheaper to mass produce something else. The plan is to make millions of these.

I thought so as well, but then when you think about it... most taxis are kind of just the back seat? Still weird not to make it a three seater bench though. I guess they want you to book two if you want more than 2 people, cha-ching.

They can part them out and make back a few bucks--batteries, motors, stainless steel, maybe the wheels--nothing like the ~$100K they're in debt for, though. Maybe if they strip the body off, some of them can build something useful on the chassis? Or, are they complete garbage?

EDIT: Ope, nope, they aren't built like that at all. I suppose most cars aren't anymore, everything is "unibody":

Just so the CyberCab can fail next. It couldn't happen to a better company.

Musk's obsession with 'breaking the mold' is driving one terrible idea after another. Their Vision-only 2 seater will never be approved for full autonomous, leaving them with a single awkward front seat taxi.

And without a rear window, I doubt even the most die-hard Musk Rats would choose it as their main car over a Model 3.

To be honest, I kind of liked how silly it was. Like a goofy low-polygon PS1 car. If the creator of it was just a quirky weirdo and not a Nazi I could definitely abide it as something charmingly ugly and weird

I can already see the reboot of the franchise in the making. Back To The (NASDAQ) Futures, the story of a ketamine-addicted blowhard that goes back in time in his Cybertruck to stop himself from building it. When he does, his time-travel Cybertruck disappears because it's never been made and he's stuck in 2023, so he misses his flight to Mars and dies of climate change like everyone else. Sad Story (R).

How can a company expect to sell over 750,000 cars in 3 years, sell less than 100,000, and not see horrendously tanking stock values? They must have lost so much money on the cybertrucks.

I'm pretty sure that Tesla stock is basically a money laundering scheme that allows oligarchs to pay him large amounts of money for being the one to openly fuck shit up (eg taking the loss to gain control of twitter, being the face of DOGE, openly buddying up with Trump, seeing what the response would be to giving a Nazi salute on live TV, etc).

I suspect he's essentially their lightning rod.

it was also so expensive to make that one of the cost cutting measures was to stop sealing the holes in the frame/underside that had that wires ran through with butyl rubber, Which meant now driving through a tiny puddle risked causing electrical shorts and thus erasing any savings from the cost cutting with warranty repairs.

which just highlights musks excellence in engineering. /s

The Tesla bubble has popped. Every earnings call will be worse than the last, and will be followed by a stock slide. There is no saving it, no rehabbing it's image. Trump may keep it alive with bailouts, but Tesla will be bankrupt the moment Trump is out of office.
