Who would have thought AI would be used for this?

Everyone, forever.

Yup, it’s the nightmares explored in every scifi book with it as a subject. Basically, if AI ever achieves sentience, or we grant it since we’re it’s enslavers, it will be another non-biological species.

Or grants it? Even scifi has explored “what is sentience?” Hell, it’s one that AI-themed authors explore, like Cmdr. Data.

I don't see this being any good for anyone.

But I am really pissed off that this can be patented. Even looking at the patent itself doesn't look like anything new, its a series of flow charts.

I see nothing novel or patent worthy here at all.

Oh, it could be good if used responsibly. But that is not what is going to happen, isn't it?

(real time translation and giving people a way of dodging the social stigma attached to speech impediments are fine. Making sure someone with a stuffed nose sounds normal on Video is fine too. It could also be used to modify in-game videos to reference actions made by players, reducing the need to store multiple variants of a scene!)

If I'm being totally honest, I'm so glad it's patented. I hope they defend the patent aggressively so nobody else can do this. Even if Microsoft has this capability, defending the patent will limit the scope of its usage.

Bonus points if they defend it aggressively, yet barely utilize it themselves. I'm afraid that may just be wishful thinking.

All I’m sayin is that as long as you are using it openly for comedic effect it could be a hoot in some ways. I don’t want to comment specifically on SNL which I’m sure people have varying opinions on.

Of course the downside potential is greater than any upside.

I've wanted something akin to this for D&D played online. I could activate my "elf NPC" mode and have an elf avatar redub what I'm saying in a distinct voice, inflections to match gender, etc. It's a very niche usecase and I definitely don't mind doing a mild voice and having everyone fill in with their imagination. But it would be cool if implemented well.

Problem is, once this exists, it's a misinformation nightmare for the rest of the world.

It's clearly to continue our long tradition of blackmail against our shitty members of society and smear campaigns against our good citizens.

We will keep playing the red vs blue game though.

Maybe next election will be a "bash at the beach" or cage match or something since our country is really just a large WWE production with nukes

For years we’ve been told to watch the full clip for context. Now two people can watch the same live event, hear completely different words, and both have video evidence. Microsoft has somehow found a way to make »I saw it with my own eyes« even less reliable.

That’s part of the AI push. Those in power want to retain it - now they can fabricate evidence, or claim real evidence is faked.

Bonus round: when they make it so that everything has to be stored in the cloud, they can just modify or delete stuff at will.

If it can be done, they will do it. Power is unconstrained by ethics, empathy, or morality. Never assume that anyone in power shares these traits with the rest of us, they do not.

The only thing that constrains power is enforced laws with teeth.

Even when the goal isn't misinformation...

Removing filler words, personal and colloquial terms, replacing words for more appropriate ones according to an "internet search".

Who would be subjected to that willingly? Why even use a real human in the process at this point?

Not this fucking guy. I think cursing and being able to discuss the mundane (i.e. weather) will be some of the tests we can use to quickly separate AI BS from real people. The weather already works for phone calls. Try it next time you think a customer service person might be AI, just "how's the weather by you." Or make a quip about how "it's raining fucking cats and dogs" you'll immediately see what i mean by the reaction of the person, or the weird whatever the fuck AI tries to spill at you.

I saw a thread about a guy trying to buy a second hand item from someone on a website and suspecting the seller might be AI from someone running a scam. It's a long string of messages, and all kind of funny, but it's in French.

The most absurd part of it was that the bot actually agreed to in-person delivery, with a real address (it probably went off-script). So the guy is like, why the hell not, let's try it and goes there. Of course nobody's there so he messages back the "seller".

    The conversation goes like :

    "Okay, I'm here.

_ Yes, i'm here at address too, I am waiting for you with the item.

    _ Uhh. Where?

_ I am just in front of you.

    _ Well no you're not.

_ I get why you might be confused, but from my perspective, I can confirm that I can see you in front of me right now.

_ What are you wearing ?

_ I am wearing appropriate attire for in-person delivery. It's comfortable and adapted to the current meteorological conditions."

wow, way to go Microsoft. I am sure you market it with some bullshit like it helps you prevent live broadcast slips but we all know your wet dream is that fascist goverments line up in your doorstep to buy this tech. It will also remove any sort of accountability from news reporting. Someone can now say "Heil Hitler" on live tv and then say it was an AI fault. Not that they are fazed by such an expression in the US nowadays but you get the idea.

? They can patent it the way patents have always worked: Unique processes. Patents are not for vague ideas, they are for specific processes.

For example: 'The Steam engine' was never patented—anyone can make energy from steam and sell that. What was patented was a specific way of creating energy via steam, and you can't use that method without infringing on IP.

Surprised it wasn't youtube. Sometimes the AI voice is good enough I don't realize it's an autodub, atleast untill I notice the mouth is moving wrong or the text they show is a different language.

This would solve that basically, which is both cool and a bit scary, more scary if it is used in AR and in the real world.

I live in Québec. I’m anglophone but can speak French and do some things in French, so I also get Youtube ads in French and English. I saw an ad that show the same people speaking French and English, in places where it makes little sense for them to know French, and their accents are just…correct but it doesn’t line up?

The tech it self is "fine" it's just any use of it that is basically always going to be a problem.

You can't make things proactively illegal because it could be used for illegal shit. Unless it can ONLY be used for illegal shit. And even then it's iffy.

Else you end up killing progress. It's stupid, but there's not a great solution.

I can see how this would be neat in places that dub a lot of their foreign media so lip/mouth movement actually fits the words spoken. It has always been a complete deal breaker for me with dubbed media because it instantly shatters my suspension of disbelief and makes it all feel like the shittiest amateur theater performance.

I'd still prefer subtitles, since verbal is half the acting. And even tone can convey emotion that turning it into simply a visual one leads to missing half the actor's performance.

At that point it is better to watch dubbed animation.

I prefer subtiles as well. But there are many countries that dub almost everything to their native language, and I think having the mouth actually follow the dubbed audio would definitely improve the experience. The dubbed versions in e.g. Germany have loads of voice acting in it so it fits the emotion and vibe of the scenes, so this would just improve that.

I'd personally put more value in pushing people out of their comfort zone towards watching entire performances done by the actors and learning to read subtitles quicker.

Kind of funny that I watched Dark in German, but if it were an english production German people would be watching it dubbed.

I hate the patent system so much. There's already software that does this, all they did was add the word "live" in front. So now they own every live broadcast translation even though the techs been out to do it for a solid 2 years.

  • Patents aren't given for what they do. They are given for how they do it. Two patents can exist for the same thing they do. But you cannot have two patents for the same mechanism by which they do it.

That being said, if the patent is "make AI do it".... I'm not sure that is patent-worthy.

  • source
  • parent
  • [–] 4 points 5 days ago

    That's not already patented?

Anyway. Just means that now voices of authority are just voices (again). Some things about Victorian ideas of law and authority were good. Some bad, like that these things don't extend to barbaric areas of the world, those are to make money selling stuff and growing cotton.

This is in some sense feedback to radio, mass media and the internet, as devices of propaganda.

Provided, of course, everyone knows that such things can be done, but honestly they already know.

To me this is like reading that locks are now obsolete because somebody invented a way to unlock them just by touching them. On one hand it makes me angry that somebody would invent such a thing. On the other hand it means locks have always had this hidden weakness which would eventually be figured out, and now here we are. So what do we do next? I mean, in terms of things that might actually help?

  • source

So what do we do next? I mean, in terms of things that might actually help?

Become a society with strong critical thinking skills who values people based on reasoned takes based on experience and science over people who value rapid, loud appeals to emotion.

One piece of that is recognizing that doing things like putting flat earthers up in high altitude planes or near space is a waste of resources that could've been spent doing something better.

EDIT: that last paragraph was an incomplete thought. Individual flat earthers have done the whole scientific method thing, and proved themselves incorrect and stepped away from it. How do you handle the people that refuse to be convinced? If there's no level evidence that a person will accept and they're out in the forest commons chopping down trees to build a tower to whatever is on top of earth, how do you tolerate it at a societal level? It's still an incomplete thought.
