You need to provide an archived link of trump saying this. Anyone can help, you all have an hour. Sorry, but I have to take it down if no one provides the link. Rule 6

I think it needs to be an archived link of the tweet... I suspect the problem is tweets getting deleted, not so much the veracity of the quote (which is well documented)

At least... I hope. Because otherwise that would be dumb.

they use recaptcha. that now requires a Google approved mobile device for anyone using a custom ROM or accessing the site using Linux or a VPN. I use CachyOS on PC and GrapheneOS on mobile, and a VPN on both, so I'm effectively banned from any of the Archive sites from now on, until or unless they stop using Google.

I'm not about to buy a new phone and sign up for a Google account just to use a website, all because a corporation wants to track me.

For these three reasons alone, I consider it highly likely that this regime will now abandon even the pretense of democracy and establish a true autocracy:

    1. ICE has a larger budget than all U.S. federal agencies combined. This budget is equivalent to the military spending of a medium-sized country. It is clearly a secret police force.
    2. Given the serious crimes they have already committed, all members of the cabinet would likely face criminal prosecution under a new administration—even within the completely dysfunctional U.S. legal system. They will not let it come to that.
    3. Coups d’état have no criminal consequences in the U.S., at least for conservatives, as evidenced by the fact that no one actually responsible was prosecuted during the last coup attempt—even the foot soldiers are all back on the loose.

I'm not holding my breath. It would be great if I'm wrong, but my bingo card has the next admin proclaiming "now is the time for healing and unity, not vengeance" instead of actually enforcing the consequences that are supposed to come with actions.

If you think the next administration is going to be anything better than the same hand in a different glove then you're deluding yourself. The only way out of this for the US is a revolution. These people will not give up power, they will need to be removed.

And if they do that, then it'll be a lesson to the next fucker that the move is to go farther and commit more crimes, because consequences don't exist, so you might as well set yourself up as President For Life and make plans to pass your regime off to your favorite child.

I don’t think one can expect even the slightest resistance from the police in a crisis, since their leadership is largely made up of the same people who elected these crooks to the White House.

I believe the circumstances surrounding the military’s current war against Iran - a war that violates both international law and U.S. law, during which they are committing the most serious war crimes - clearly indicate that no resistance is to be expected from them either. Furthermore, all generals critical of the regime have already been removed.

In Short: Both the police and the military are led predominantly by MAGA officials who would benefit from the establishment of a dictatorship. I therefore do not think they would offer resistance in a crisis - they could do so right now given the obvious crimes the regime commits on a daily basis, but they just do not.

I think it will simply turn out however the oligarchs who actually control the U.S. decide. If they want a dictatorship modeled on the Russian one, that’s exactly what will happen.

Yes, that’s true: the methods of oppression in the U.S. are still relatively subtle at the moment. However, that doesn’t change the fact that in the U.S., too, a tiny elite exploits the country while standing above the law - a point proven by the very fact that the current president is, in fact, president rather than serving a life sentence in prison.

What I’m getting at is this: It would be easier for this elite to switch to the Russian model. I consider it likely that they intend to do so, since the current regime demonstrates on a daily basis that the most serious crimes in the US always go unpunished - so why even maintain the facade when it’s already abundantly clear that the law simply doesn’t apply to the powerful elite?

We’ll see. One thing, however, should be quite clear: it is very unlikely that the living conditions of U.S. citizens will improve significantly, even if the status quo is maintained. The system has already been infiltrated far too deeply for that to happen. The US will therefore remain an oligarchy one way or another - living conditions will continue to deteriorate until US citizens dismantle the system, which I consider virtually impossible. The only question, then, is whether the democracy charade will continue or not, because there is truly no democracy in the U.S. where the system serves the people. The current administration merely makes this clearer than its predecessors.

I think something people aren't quite realizing with the whole "weaponization fund" is that it's subtlety removing the jury from the criminal justice equation, which has so far been one of the primary reasons Trump has not been able to get any convictions against his enemies. It's subtle because it's doing it in the other direction first, but it send a very clear message that juries might no longer have the final say in determining guilt or innocence moving forward.

Because in this case he is specifically calling by the books jury trials "weaponization" and "lawfare." It's way beyond simple corruption, which he can do just fine with his various crypto and real estate scams, and the language is being chosen intentionally.

The pardon power is a constitutional one, but to disparage the entire criminal justice system like this is ripping the blindfold off Lady Justice in a plainly partisan and autocratic way. It's priming people for conditions which will ultimately undermine the process in both directions - letting him protect his allies and justify erosion of due process as somehow flawed or optional. He's already doing it with his deportation framework, in which people who have never been charged with any crime are being labeled "criminals" and denied due process.

This is a crossing the Rubicon moment for Trump. The entire maga apparatus understands that at least the pretense of consequences await them if another group takes over, that includes people who have been fired or left. It happened to them the last time. They know this time the other side is getting voted in on consequences, and they know the other side knows they have a year or two post election to do it, or else they already risk getting wiped out in the midterms just like the situation that republicans find themselves in now.

It's life or death right now for a lot of members of this admin, and they are gonna act like that. Good luck us.

Nah, to I much American identity is tied to being a democracy. It'll go the way of Russia and all the "democratic people's republics", with elections and even an opposition, but the opposition will be harassed and prevented from functioning, or the vote will be manipulated, or whatever.

I don't think this is true. According to research reported here: https://europeelects.eu/2021/02/18/trustworthy-but-meaningless-votes-a-look-at-how-russians-view-their-own-elections/ 49% of Russians thought that local elections in 2021 were fair, compared to 37% viewing it as unfair.

This is only about local elections, and even though the pollster is independent it may be under pressure, but I think the best evidence we have is that a sizeable number of Russians think Russia is democratic.

You have to wonder why Putin goes to all the effort of holding and falsifying elections if noone in Russia believes in them.

We have a large portion of the population that is undereducated, which leads to lack of critical thinking skills and media illiteracy. Unfortunately we also have a large population in the south that is brainwashed by Christian nationalism, which the Republicans gladly pander to. These people are lied to on a daily basis by nothing short of propaganda in our news media.

I believe that people latch onto him because he has very simplistic messaging that they can understand. They are told and believe that he is good and will help them and the country’s economy. That or they’re downright racist and just want immigrants to be deported.

This coupled with our somewhat rigged electoral college system causes things like this to happen in our country. Many of us don’t like it and would like the electoral college to be abolished. However, the Republicans know that without it they would never win, so it stays. Our largest population centers ALWAYS lean heavily Democrat. The “land” that votes in our federal elections would never stand a chance without the EC.

I’d love if we could have ranked choice and/or just purely popular vote. But yeah as it stands the lower population states get extra points in federal elections for “fairness.” This is how Trump won the first time; he lost the popular vote but still won the election. That wasn’t the case the second time, but it still doesn’t make much sense that that can happen.

But will that make a difference?

1). I would not be surprised if the world was presented with digitally generated Trump video clips and social media posts, even if he was dead. Few people see the man in person - you could probably push back giving the public news of his death for a few years if you call it a security threat for him to go out in public and thus do all his communications digitally.

2). I worry that there will be a church of Trump after he passes. Much like the stories of Jesus took off decades after he had died, some crap story about Trump’s sainthood is sure to circulate. MAGA already puts out statements about how he understands theology better than the pope, etc. You could have some kind of Pastor of Trump that leads a theocracy.

3). Dictatorships don’t just resolve when the leader dies. There will be plenty of infighting to see who will become the new alpha, and the person who wins that battle is likely the one with the fewest scruples.

You know? I'm starting to think that November doesn't matter at all.

I mean: we already know that the current administration can openly ignore judges without any consequence. So: what is anyone going to do if after November, the pedoparty loses all their seats but they simply ignore the results and stay in power? Who's gonna arrest them? Who's gonna enforce the judge ruling saying that X or Y won that seat and the pedopolitician in question should be removed from it?

I don't think right now the US has the spine to start a civil war and, frankly, you are gonna need it. It's about time you realize your legal system and your judges are worth shit if the people enforcing the laws and rulings are in bed with the ones breaking the law.

In the scenario you're talking about, that would be the moment when US democracy is definitively in the can, beyond hope of recovery by conventional means. That would be the right time to overthrow the administration by any means necessary. But yeah I really wonder if even then there would be enough collective spine to make it happen. Every effort will be made to muddy the waters. The vote will be rigged wherever possible. The white house will announce a resounding success. Most news outlets will parrot this line. From some democrats there will be "deep concern" about how the elections were handled. There will be calls for an immediate investigation. Some investigations will take place and there will be findings and condemnations, which ultimately have no effect. But the cumulative message will always be : "now is not the time"

  • Keep in mind they have the power to purge voter registries wherever and whenever they want, red states have enacted laws to allow them to reject voting outcomes, it's already been shown that if they throw enough of the results to courts it gets dragged out and thrown out, ultimately getting to the scotus where with a con-majority there is no doubt what they'd do.

But with his own personal fascist army via ICE, plus whatever parts of the military are perfectly cool murdering children and civilians, not to mention all the other dickless chuds in his cult...he'd turn them out in a heartbeat

He has no intention of leaving after 2028. He's not building that ballroom for some Democrat, or anyone else. That's his.

We need to have a major open national discussion about how we would handle such a situation, so that they know that he can't just pull a Maduro, and just ignore the results of elections, and remain in the Royal Palace.

He needs to know that if he attempts to stay, there will be a march on the White House, and everyone inside will be executed, and the building burned to the ground. If we have to go that far, we're re-starting from scratch.
