Sometimes it’s late and you can’t be bothered to argue with someone who believes they are unequivocally right, so the best thing to do is downvote and move on.

If you think your comments being downvoted is Lemmy hostility towards alt-text, consider that the manner in which you ask someone to do a favor is the more likely culprit. And it is asking a favor. As someone who write a lot of alt-text for posts, I know it can take a considerable amount of time and effort and sometimes I won’t post something because I just don’t have time to sit there and type out the transcript for something. While a lack of alt-text may “violate WCAG guidelines”, it does not in fact violate this community’s guidelines. I absolutely encourage posters to use alt-text, however it is not a requirement.

The reason I use spoiler markdown is because at this time of the two best mobile clients (in my opinion) neither currently supports alt-text. I submitted a request with my current preferred, Mlem, a long while back, but their backlog is long and I don’t code so all you can do is remind them.

Depending on your client you will see an alt text field you can fill, or you can use the spoiler markdown to add alt text to the description field of the post.
