There's like tons of stories where people seeing ghastly figure at roadside while on their midnight drive, i'm pretty sure truck driver used to and probably still share stories about those.
There was a kid on the bike on a ride home from Canada in the middle of the night, he rode right in front of the car, I swear we went through him, but he was so close and it happened so fast. Middle of the night pitch black and just a dark corn field to the left where he would be riding, the strangest possible ghost sighting I ever had
What? Yeah you do. The Hitchhiking ghost is one of the most common tropes!
The Els Alfacs (Tarragona, Catalonia) road.
As you can see in the pic, it's not the middle of nowere but a road following the coast with urbanizations around.

During the 70s, a truck transporting propylene crashed on the camping wall, besides the road, exploding and killing 215 people.
Since that, drivers passing through that road, claim to see human silhouettes, besides the area of the crash, like silent witness looking at the road.
Woah, 215 is a TON of people...
Yes you do. Ghostly hitchhikers are a common story. There's even songs about them. There's also stories of ghost cars and ghost trucks.
Gonna have to disagree with you on that one, OP. There are plenty of supposedly haunted roadways. Please don't be pedantic and ask for sources. You can do an internet search, too.
Edit: ESPECIALLY bridges
Isn't the hitchhiker like one of the most famous ghost archetypes?
I'm more curious why we never see ghosts in some radical 80s and 90s attire, they're all Victorian and shit.
Yah I was going to chime in on the same, bridges and railroad crossings, likely as a warning to others but who knows.
They’re still mad because now they’re in ghost traffic, too busy to haunt the living.
There's tons of haunted roads, strange to me that you haven't heard of one!
How about hospitals? People die there every day. If ghosts exist, that’s the place where you should find them. Like, not just a few either. Nearly all of them. Can you think of another place that faces so much death that they had to build specific facilities for it.
You hear a lot about haunted morgues, but that's of course just people projecting their icky feelings toward death: The vast majority of people don't die in the morgue. Similarly, the vast majority of people are long dead and partly preserved before they're in a graveyard. Kinda'... proves it's all BS projection.
don’t die in the morgue
Pretty sure the woman was some sort of "alive" in The Autopsy of Jane Doe. :)
Anyone who likes horror should give that movie a shot.
What about all the other haunted locations where only one person died? The number of corpses doesn’t seem to correlate with ghosts very well. Also, if a single dead guy is enough to make a place haunted, nearly every house should be haunted after a few centuries have passed. Guess what, there are cities where people have lived well over a thousand years. Aren’t Luxor, Beijing or Delhi super haunted by now?
Yea, there's little correlation anywhere with anything except people hearing spooky stories or assuming spooky things. Or the rare case where there is loud sub-audible noise or EMF that makes people feel uneasy, and make up the rest.
The human mind is a pattern-seeking engine. Even when real patterns aren’t there, imaginary ones will be detected instead. Just look at the clouds for a while, and you’ll see what I mean. This applies to images, sounds, events, just about anything really.
Ask anyone who works in a hospital and they'll tell you it's haunted. Especially if it's old.
Sounds like a fun creative writing prompt
Damn we need more people on Lemmy so we can make a creative writing doodad
Stephen King did it, more than once I think. "Riding the Bullet" comes to mind. "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band" is close. A couple gets off the highway into a town populated entirely by dead rock stars and captured people.
And you'd think there'd be ghosts walking up and down the halls of hospitals all day long
Do you work in a hospital? I don't, but I'm in and out all the time (EMS) and I think every hospital has its ghost stories. I was just doing a clinical shift as a student in the hospital last week and the nurses were all spooked about an incident that happened in the ER the night before where everyone in the ER heard a scream coming from a block of empty rooms and they all went running and no one was there, they said they went around to all the other rooms and out to the waiting room and no one had screamed.
I'm actually rather skeptical and 99% of things have a good non ghost explanation, but there are weird things that happen and I've seen people who disappeared with no possible way to do so if they were a real human. If I was going to go all in on believing in ghosts I would guess that the reason that hospitals aren't full of ghosts is because most people are going to "leave" and go haunt somewhere they have a close emotional connection. Which would you rather, haunt some random building that you happened to die in, or haunt the house you lived in for years and feel safe in?
Y'know, when you're driving at 5mph on the freeway and your radio cuts out? That's not the DJ messing up, that's a ghost playing with the dials.
Hmmm maybe all the ghosts want to haunt somewhere less crowded so they can become famous.
That's because ghosts don't keep their cars and they can't keep up with you if you're driving.
wouldnt that be a poltegeist. supernatural had an episode where it was a ghost truck that haunted a certain road.
It certainly doesn't help that ghosts don't exist and are simply people lying or being overly imaginative.
Never made sense to me how people even remotely entertain the idea of ghosts. In regards to poltergeists especially, how is something that has practically no mass, since it's either invisible or barely visible, supposed to exert these forces (and resist the counter-forces) to throw shit around? What are their biomechanics? They don't have joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, any of that shit. They are just a bit of gas, if that, somewhat orderly floating around.
???
Ah, but my bad, people don't think, that's the problem.
