This feels like a trap. Anyone confirm it doesn't just drain your crypto wallets?

I've never heard of a virus or malware from a FitGirl package.

Okay but did they vibe coded this port by themselves or did they even check the code base for this? This is different from repackaging a legit game with a crack. Like a crypto miner could be hidden inside the code base that even a virus scanner might not even find. Since then there is a good chance the compiled binary won’t show any patterns that match with known malware.

Why do you have such little faith in the scene? Anytime a torrent contains something nasty in it, the community lets everyone know about it almost immediately. I've been downloading cracks, hacks, keygens, and repacks since the 90s, and I've never had an issue with a virus/trojan/crypto miner/etc. Use common sense and you have nothing to worry about.

My understanding is that they've always wanted to port it to PC since it was an incredibly successful title, but they had licensing issues with Sony thay prevent them from doing so.

In other words, don't blame From Software, blame the suits at Sony for thinking that keeping Bloodbourne as a console exclusive forever will somehow translate to selling more Playstations.

Would make a little more sense if it wasn't still locked to a console they replaced 13 year ago and discontinued entirely 10 years ago.

Even though it came out on the PS4, it's backwards compatible with the PS5. Keeping it exclusive still means that the game can sell a system if someone really wants to play it bad enough.

Of course, that probably accounts for less than 1% of people who purchase a PS5 at this point, but you and I have probably put more thought into this in this one single thread than the entire board of directors at Sony did. To them, games are transactional and old games are not worth bothering with at this point.

Would make a little more sense

See, that's the problem right there.

Nothing corpo executives do makes sense to rational human beings unless you're only considering the next quarter, but Sony executives don't even make sense in that particular case.

They just seem to be trying to bring down the company by making the worst possible decision at any point in time.

Only if you have a beast of a PC. From what I've seen these ports run significantly better and come prepackaged with many fixes to shadps4 issues like vertex explosions.

It didn't need a beast, exactly, just a decent rig. I never could fix the vertex explosions, though, and it was mildly unstable.

You do need somewhat of a beast if you want to fix the vertex explosions. To prevent vertex explosions you need to enable readbacks, but those are very performance intensive (and can cause games to be unstable but I lucked out with just getting shit performance). Readbacks took Bloodborne from 1440p ultrawide 60+ fps to 1080p widescreen struggling to hit 60fps in some areas and I tried all sorts of things to even get it running at 60 with readbacks so that sometimes 60 contained all the optimization patches and configurations tweaks, whatever could get me just a bit more performance (none of which I needed when playing 1440p).

When I tried it a couple month back, game was crashing every 5minutes. With a 7800x3d,a 9070 and 32gb of ram. I used to think it's a decent rig but maybe not.

The author of this repo is brand new and this is their only project. There is very little reputation on the line here for that account. I'm sure it works, but all it takes is for the project to include a single reference to some code somewhere else to end up with malware on your system.

There is very little reputation to go off of with projects like this. So it's worth being extra cautious.

Then why is it widely used to distribute software to users?

  • source
  • parent
  • hideshow 2 child comments
  • [–] 1 point 2 weeks ago

Because it's free hosting, and if you use it for code, you already have your project on there.

Part of the issue is that doing anything more involved requires the developer to now put work into setting up another solution, and usually the developer wants to work on the project, not on making a website or launcher for the project.

Also worth noting is the typical Linux ideology, where the developer isn't in charge of getting software to users, they're expected to set the project up so it compiles consistently, and the distribution maintainers are then expected to package it for their distro.

Literally all the modern recompilations are AI-driven.

There are various levels of involvement of human actors in the loop, but if you don’t want to use any AI project, just ignore them all.

So when I use Photoshop that's filled with AI tools or After Effects with AI 3D tracking to accelerate my project, it's not my project because the work was made easier because of modern tools?

It's a yes or no question.

Prompting an AI agent is not the same as using photoshop. It is more comparable to commissioning something (art, code, writing, etc). You don't have authorship, the LLM does in this case. That doesn't mean you can't own the piece that gets created, that's what commissioning is, you just can't claim you authored it. Though whether you or the company that runs the model owns the output is still not a settled question legally speaking.

  • source
  • parent
  • hideshow 4 child comments
  • [–] 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 child)

No, this is pretty settled. Generative outputs such as these are not owned by anyone. As you said, the AI "authored" it similarly to a commissioned work and cannot hold a copyright so there was nothing to assign to the prompt writer.

  • [–] -3 points 2 weeks ago (1 child)

Last I checked, AI creations cannot be copyrighted if human work was not involved (no human - no copyrights). This means that if you had to do something by yourself, even compiling, then there was human. While for AI generated images it's quite clear you will not own it, but software tends to be more advanced, ChatGPT doesn't just send you an exe file, you have to put it together by yourself.

Again this is the difference between authorship and ownership. While I'm no lawyer, to my understanding you must demonstrate that what you did was genuinely transformative to claim authorship.

You use compiling the code an LLM gives you as an example of this. Does a person running gentoo have the ability to claim authorship of all the software on their machine because they compiled it?

I think the only thing you can certainly claim authorship over is the prompt(s) that were used to generate the output.

Another good example of this is compilers. How often do you see people claim authorship of the assembly generated as an intermediary step of the gcc?

I feel like there are two things

    1. People with limited knowledge using AI to achieve things that they personally aren't able to do
    2. People with knowledge using AI to achieve things human brains can't do

I'm not smart enough to know which one of these actually applies in this situation, but I feel that they are distinctly different and justify a use case. My layman understanding is reverse engineering software like this is completely not feasible with just sheer human willpower

If you are informed on this subject please enlighten me which of these apply if any

  • source
  • parent
  • hideshow 3 child comments
  • [–] 3 points 2 weeks ago

This would likely have been a multi-year effort if done manually by experts on hobby time, and impossible if the person using AI didn't know what they were doing.

The LLM would have gotten stuck for sure without proper guidance.

  • source

  • [–] 1 point 3 days ago (1 child)

For technically impressive things you just need to level up as a human. AI can help find information to accelerate that a bit.

Reverse engineering is not hard, just tedious. That is why AI is perfect for it. It won't get bored.
