What to post

This is a place to post limited-time giveaways of full video games that are then yours to keep forever at no cost. Please use the search to check what you're posting hasn't already been posted, and start your posts with [Source] or [Store via Source] so that people can ignore giveaways they're not interested in. For example, if Fanatical were giving away a Steam key for Pong, I'd title the post [Steam via Fanatical] Pong, the classic tennis sim.

Please copy the game's description (or at least the relevant bits) to the post body. If the game has an "AI Disclosure" then please include it in the post body too.

I post deals as I find them (sometimes spread out over a few days or bundled together so it doesn't get too noisy) but feel free to post them if you find them first.

If you have keys that you'd like to give away then !giftofgaming@lemmy.world is a better place to post.

Forever-Free Friday

The main exception to the limited-time giveaways only rule is for the occasional posting of games which are always free. On Fridays you can post a game that's permanently free if you think it's worth showcasing to everyone. Maybe it's a FOSS project, maybe it's a game that's gone free-to-play, just make sure that the post starts with [Forever-Free Friday] and that it's something worth playing and not just the publishers trying the freemium model instead!

No such thing as a free lunch

Nothing is ever completely free, and there's a definite hierarchy to the kinds of giveaways posted here:

  1. Free open-source software is pretty hard to beat, it's the free-est lunch you can get!
  2. Indies being given away directly by their creators on sites like itch.io, they may ask you to pay what you want or message you about their other games but that's about it
  3. DRM-free storefronts like GOG, you can download the installer and keep it forever but obviously they're hoping that you'll start using their site for making actual purchases too
  4. Steam, Epic Games, IndieGala, Fanatical, Microsoft, Google Play, etc. will offer freebies which could theoretically disappear at any point (this doesn't happen often, but always remember that you don't really "own" most digital items), they also hope that giving freebies will encourage you to spend money on other games of theirs
  5. Subscriptions like Amazon Prime Gaming cost money but you do get to keep the games even after you cancel
    • They offer free trials (supposedly only requiring a unique email) so you can sign up, claim all the games you want, then cancel
    • This is basically where I draw the line as you can still keep games forever if you're willing to jump through the required hoops
  6. Subscriptions like Netflix, GamePass, PS+ and Switch Online are more like renting games, you lose access to them when you stop paying so I don't count them as free games even if you are somehow able to access them for free
  7. Freemium/pay-to-win games which you can play for free as a second-class citizen don't count, and they generally have enough marketing budget that you're aware of them without the need to have them posted here!

We're all adults here and I hope you don't need to be told to be wary of blindly installing dodgy software or not to support companies you don't like. If you don't want to see giveaways from a particular source and you use a Lemmy client which supports filters then you can block specific strings from showing, for instance if you didn't want to see anything from Amazon then you could hide the string Prime].

Keep it civil and keep it chill!

Plant a flag. Draw your first house. Watch a handful of settlers grow a village into a town, while winter, hunger, raiders and rival factions do their best to stop you.

Kinstead is an isometric medieval colony builder. You don't micromanage units: you shape a place where people live and work, and the stories come from what they do.

Features

  • Draw it, they build it. Drag out walls, rooms and zones, then add doors, furniture, roads and defences. Your settlers haul the materials and do the building themselves. Every construction site shows what it still needs and how far along it is.

  • People, not units. Every settler has skills, traits, moods, needs, a body that can be wounded and a daily schedule you can edit. Four peoples (human, dwarf, elf and serpentfolk) work differently. Keep them fed, housed, healthy and busy, or watch what happens when they break.

  • Farm, craft, trade. Fields, pastures (milk, wool, eggs, meat), hunting, fishing, mines, mills, bakeries, breweries, weavers, smokehouses and kitchens. Storage with filters and priorities, food that spoils, roads that really make people faster.

  • Research through the ages. A large research tree: Knowledge from libraries, Innovation from laboratories. Unlock buildings and recipes, then upgrade them over several levels.

  • Seasons, weather, night. The land changes with the year, and winter is not decoration. Wolves and boars roam, and pirates come for what you have built.

  • Defend your home. Barricades, spike traps, crossbow towers, an alarm bell, and a militia you can train, equip and organise into divisions.

  • Battles with morale. Divisions fight as blocks: charges, flanking, archers, formations. A line that breaks drags its neighbours with it.

  • A living world. Choose your site on a generated world with biomes, climate, rivers and ore. AI factions declare wars, trade by caravan, conquer cities and collapse. Send caravans, raise an army, take a city, and be remembered for it.

  • Your own story. Quests, visitors, merchants, pilgrims and strangers asking to join. Start scenarios and rule modifiers, shareable map seeds, achievements and a banner you design yourself.

  • English and Romanian, with music and ambience that follow the mood of the day.

Early version: what to expect

Kinstead is in active development and this is an early public version. The core is playable: founding a colony, building, farming, research, raids and the world map. Expect rough edges, unfinished corners, balance changes and bugs. Tell me what you run into; your feedback decides what gets fixed first.

Asleep is a psychological horror adventure set in the Brazilian Northeast of the 90s, and with a unique artistic look, ranging from detailed pixel art to fluid animations. "Act 1" is the first episode of Ana Lúcia's story, a lonely and confused girl, lost in her nightmares, and immersed in a disturbing reality.

With not much information, and a mind flirting with insanity, the player must join her to unravel what is happening in her universe, collecting clues in her sketchbook and solving puzzles. Armed only with a flashlight to illuminate the path, and wit to survive the enemies always lurking in the darkness.

Turn to your flashlight and the ambient lighting to survive, using light to find new items and places, and even to attract or avoid enemies. Different monsters react differently to light! With your flashlight in hand, use stealth mechanics to escape dangers while learning to deal with each threat.

Avoid staying in the dark for too long, as it will cause the protagonist's sanity to deteriorate, leaving her anxious and attracting more dangers. The longer in the darkness, the more chaotic Ana Lúcia's nightmares become.

Explore point-and-click mechanics to solve puzzles, flee from monsters like in classic survival horrors, and navigate the environment through Asleep's platforming elements. All while experiencing the game's dark atmosphere by exploring the highly detailed 2D environments developed in pixel art.

And more:

  • Travel between two versions of the game's universe, encountering an even darker and more hostile side of it
  • Collect documents, items, and clues to unravel the dark mysteries of the plot
  • Dense narrative with some choices and collectibles that can unlock secret memories
  • Story divided into chapters, with Act 1 being the first part of the game - Act 2 now available as DLC!

  • Pressure Below

Under your yard is a sewer, and it's full.

Floor to ceiling, every tunnel is packed with decades of muck, and buried in it is everything the town ever flushed, dropped or lost: rings, watches, coins, old cameras, the odd gold bar. You have a pressure washer, five lamps and a hose on a reel.

Walk down the service stairs, hold the trigger and carve your own way through. Wash your finds clean (clean sells for more), carry them back up into daylight and sell them at the stall in your yard to whoever wanders past. Spend the money on a longer hose, a bigger air tank, a stronger pump and a bigger backpack, and go deeper.

  • Drain The Lake with a Spoon

Locals call it Bottomless Lake. You have a teaspoon.

Walk down to the water, dip your spoon, carry it back to the water company's depot and pour it in. They pay a dollar a litre. That's half a cent a trip. The counter says 72,217,347 litres to go: 14 billion teaspoons. Do the maths later.

Upgrade what you carry

Tablespoon, paper cup, jug, bucket, storage box, wheelbarrow, barrel trolley. Running shoes for the long walk. Every upgrade makes the next trip worth more, and the trips keep getting longer, because as the lake drains the water's edge walks away from you.

  • Move the Mountain with a Spoon

Locals call it Mount Grumble. You have a teaspoon.

The Ministry of Roads wants it moved to the field next door. Walk up to the mountain, dig a teaspoon of sand, carry it to the new site and pour it inside the stakes. The Ministry pays a dollar a litre. The counter says 56,541,510 litres to go: 11 billion teaspoons. Better start walking.

The sequel to Drain the Lake with a Spoon.

Real sand

Every grain slides. Undercut a slope and it comes down on you. Pour a load and it cones out. Dig deep enough and you find the clay, the gravel of an old riverbed, and a granite heart only a pickaxe can break.

Bigger spoons

Tablespoon, paper cup, jug, bucket, storage box, wheelbarrow, barrel trolley. Every upgrade makes the next trip worth more.

Gold in the gravel

140 nuggets and 13 lost things are buried in Mount Grumble. A metal detector hears them, a ground radar sees them. Sell them at the assay office.
