Three-day work week and one-income family... for the Bezos family, anyway.

At critical social mass, humans have the ability to create their own orbit.

As if chucks of space dirt, the gravitationaly weak become mass for the masshole.

Classlisly gasly, the husks of once individuals become encapsulated not by strength or wisdom, but through social influence

....for just 5 trillion more dollars, we can develop a surgery to make jeff's eyes be the same size.

An extra .002 Bitcoin can give Jeff a name that isn't close to Jeffrey.

Anyone who believes Bezos clearly doesn't understand how capitalism works. AI will allow rich people who already own the companies to increase productivity with fewer employees. Meaning, they will gain more money and have less reason to spend it. Without a drastically higher wealth tax which funds social programs, how are the working (read: redundant) class going to GET access to money? With what jobs?

Let me ask you this: back in more chauvinistic times, a family was expected to subsist entirely on a single salary: the husband's. Since women's lib doubled the workforce, have families become more or less able to afford necessities like housing? The economy doesn't adjust to make things easier for people. If the average household income doubles, households don't become more able to afford things. Prices just go up.

The people who already possess resources like property aren't gonna suddenly stop asking have-not newcomers for as much money as they can squeeze out of them. There's absolutely no aspect of capitalism that will ever lead to that outcome.

So if rich people who own businesses can make those businesses function with fewer employees, then they're not gonna just say "hey guys, I'm gonna pay you the same wages for only working 3 days, doubling my workforce and the amount I have to pay it". There's no reason for them to do so. None. Poor people will, instead, go jobless and be allowed to slowly die of any of many poverty-related causes.

Rich people only tolerate poor people because they need so many of us to do things for them. That's about to change.

    Sure, it could.

... and Bezos could double the pay of thousands of his employees for life and still make more than all of them combined.

    But he won't

AI has allowed many people a 0-day workweek already.

  • source
  • [–] 13 points 3 weeks ago* (1 child)

We already had one income families, and then capitalism stole it from us.

Now that women are part of the workforce, we need a 20 hour minimum workweek (with the same weekly minimum wage) to restore the workers rights we had 100 years ago.

When I was a kid, computers were just starting to turn from primitive to sophisticated. The business world looked at the new computer age and immediately said "This technology will usher in a new era of productivity where we can have shorter and fewer working days per week!"

And they were right. Sort of.

The new era of productivity was on the horizon, but the promised benefits for the working class never materialized.

Businesses are never incentivized to pass the savings of increased productivity on to the employees. In fact, any business that voluntarily chooses to do so out of the goodness of their own hearts and a desire to provide for their workers would likely be out-competed by other companies vying for the same market share who chose not to do so. That's not a bug, that's a feature of capitalism.

Mark my words, as someone who has lived through the broken promise of "technology will free us from the shackles of labor!" once before; AI is not going to give you a 3 day workweek or put any extra money in your paycheck (unless you are part of the grift itself). It's more likely to give you a 0 day workweek when your corporate masters find a way to eliminate you, you squeaky cog.

And if you think I'm wrong, that's fine, but just remember what I said when your company posts a 300% increase in productivity, a 200% increase in revenue and record-shattering profits, but when it comes time for your performance review you get a 0.5% cost of living raise, a request for you to take on more responsibility now that you have agentic AI automating much of your job, and a pat on the back for your hard work.

If you get anything from the coming AI revolution, it won't be because your bosses decide to give it to you. It will be because you took it for yourself by political force or physical force.

Divorce and mid life crisis hits hard I guess.

"One income family" makes sense when he thinks of everyone working at Amazon as family.

  • source
  • That would require either a massive unified movement of the people to fight for workers' rights and wealth redistribution, massive scaled and well designed goverment regulation, or employers to willingly decide to demand less of their employees and pay them more... by definition, a billionaire is incapable of saying "no... that's enough return on my investment". There is no way that they will willingly pay out more than they need to for anything, least of all for part time human labor.

Nationalize Amazon, Walmart and these other giant 'too big to fail' corporations. Then use those profits to fund UBI. If America wants to be a capitalist country, let's just make it one that actually works for all of the citizens.

Families being squeezed for more money pushes both adults into the workforce. Well if both work they can afford more rent, if they can afford more rent then the house is worth more to a landlord and the price goes up and up. Banks profit, landlords profit. You get fucked.

Even if you buy instead of rent, the banks are making more than ever on the higher interest that result from high housing costs.

Neither of these contribute anything of benefit to society. They don't build roads or improve the local community. Yet they benefit from the work of others who do by increasing the amount they take even more!

Single income was normal two generations ago. It was taken from us because of greed.

  • source
  • hideshow 1 child comment
  • [–] 4 points 3 weeks ago

In the past it was more because of competition. It's not that companies started offering less, they just stopped increasing what they would offer, and still got the people they wanted. Because there is always someone more desperate.

More recently it's been greed. It shows up as sustained high profit margins you'll see primarily in tech companies. Outside of the tech industry the only issue is how long the market or government takes to correct it. Politics around the oil industry being an example.

This is the problem with unchecked capitalism. We had so many tech advances nobody should have to work more than 1hr per day anymore.

Now a person lives in suboptimal conditions and think why not work 2hrs to get a bigger flat. This person competes against all 1hr slackers and wins. Now another person comes along and grinds 3hrs and wins. The whole thing spirales up until living conditions are unbearable and you cant earn more.

Whats true: AI increases efficiency. Whats not true: efficiency gains will be handed through to the workers.

The advances we had since the 70's are crazy. Yet we went from single income to double income while not having enough for a home, children. So history speaks a different language than bezos.

It has opened up possibilities for me. Got several save editors made, a 2006 game that now runs and controls well on modern Windows, and it is recompiling a Windows v3.1 game to run natively on modern computers. Also can be used to translate games, and it made a plugin.

Considering that this is with an experimental local AI model, I think the proper release would push things a step further.

As someone that was just forced to use Amazon's digital assistant for the items they said were delivered but weren't, I highly doubt the capability is where he is saying. (I am quitting Amazon, only used them a few times this year, not many options for some stuff out here in the country though.)

They are over their heads in investing in this, and they can't meet their hype.

Not the first time either. I'm not in the city though.
