I remember when Spotify was in its early days, they basically hired the Swedish pirate community and tons of music freaks to either write the code or hand-curate the recommendations. Tons of people sat down and linked artists together in a recommendations network for what must have taken years before there was enough user data to have the algorithm roll on its own.

I imagine something similar was done for Netflix in the beginning. And at some point, some self-important corporate asshat decided to just throw one of their most valuable assets away.

To put this in perspective: up until February of this year Iran still had Cisco infrastructure for their networks, and it took part in the attack against them. It wasn't until after this last war that they finally ripped out all of the American silicon.

Seems like this is one really difficult lesson to learn, or perhaps the students are just a bit dull.

Well, I'm proud of you for trying. I made an effort some years ago trying to set up a cloud for the extended family to use, but it is so much work to actually keep it all fast, safe and going at all times and I don't want to be the reason that everybody loses their family photos. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

No, it's the ultraprocessed stuff that can be pretty bad. But I think a lot of things have happened in the past decade during which there was also a huge focus on sustainability, so I think the market is better now than it used to be. I'm not up to speed anymore.

It's been a good long while since I made my comparisons but i believe Quorn was worse than chicken (but not as bad as beef obviously). In Sweden we also have Anamma which used to be very good, but at some point they removed their classic formulations and suddenly added like 30% sugar to everything (and doubled the price for good measure). Not sure if they've walked that back by now, hopefully they have.
