After seeing a megathread praising Mao Zedong, an actual mass killer, and a post about a guy saying "99% of westerners are 100000000000% sure they know what happened in 'Tiny Man Square' [...] the reasons for this are complex and involve propaganda [...]," I am genuinely curious what leads people to this belief system. Even if propaganda is involved when it comes to Tiananmen Square, it doesn't change the atrocities that were/are committed everywhere else in China.

I am all for letting people believe what they want but I am lost on why one would deliberately praise any authoritarian system this hard.

Can someone please help me understand why this is such a large and prominent community? How have these ideals garnered such a following outside of China?

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who has responded! This thread has been very insightful :)

People deify their favorite State and overlook the bad it does. All States commit atrocities so it is easier for everyone to look away rather than say "I like x about how y nation handles z" and be specific about it.

As a couple of poster here are already demonstrating, they discover that western nations have lied about communist nations, but they don't learn the more fundamental lesson that they shouldn't trust everything a nation says. So instead of adopting a nuanced view, they just counter believing everything a western nation says with rejecting everything a western nation says and instead believing everything a communist nation says.

    Yep.

I'm perhaps older than some here, so I saw something similar after 9/11.

Western media, especially American media, were often blatantly biased in favour of the US government and the so called 'war on terror'. Especially when stuff leaked out about torture, mass killings and abuses. People turned to alternatives and often found channels like Russia Today. And to be fair, at first glance Russia Today did (certainly at the time) appear to be far more nuanced than mainstream media. It was certainly and often justifiably critical of what the US and its allies was up to around that time. But people who spent a lot of time uncritically watching Russia Today, often ended up believing the Russian government propaganda mixed in with truths.

I think it's also in large part due to the human tendency to simplify reality. Reality is often complex, but we prefer to thing in categories, like black and white. And so you often see people thinking in or blindly accepting false binaries. Side A bad, so side B bad good. (e: brain fart)

It's surprisingly common. I mean, look how common it is to think of Germany as the bad guy in WWI, when the reality was far more nuanced. The British empire really wasn't great.

And in WWII the nazis were obviously evil, but that doesn't mean the allies were particularly good either. For example, Roosevelt didn't do that much to stop the deportation of up to 2 million Mexicans and Mexican Americans, putting Japanese Americans in concentration camps wasn't moral, America was still virulently racist, and contrary to what you may have been led to believe about the Soviets up to 1 in 4 rapes by allied troops were perpetrated by Americans. Churchill arguably helped kill up to 4 million Indians during the war. Etc. etc.

The Post 9/11 situation with Mass Media and RT is why it's so desperately important for a Government to not lie or cover up it's actions. Another example of this is Al Jazeera. The US Government's dedication to hiding its dirty deeds opened the door for AJ to establish credibility which they later used against the US and it's Government.

    Agreed.

Nuance is difficult, and arguably more to the point, it's sort of vague and insubstantial, not least because an awful lot of it necessariky boils down to "I don't know." People generally prefer something more solid to which to cling, so tend toward absolutes and unjustified certainties. And the most attractive ones are binaristic, because then you don't even have to provide support for your claimed position - all you have to do is find fault with the (generally falsely dichotomous) alternative.

Not a tankie, but this kind of framing is reductionist and condescending. It's possible for someone to study the spectrum of political ideology and rationally decide that Communism is the best system. It's honestly disheartening that a non-falsifiable claim presented with zero evidence would garner this many upvotes on this platform.

THANK you. I was considering saying something similar here, and did in response to another ignorant, self-assuaging user elsewhere in the thread. So I'll just say the same thing I said to them, as a response to WatDabney above:

If you read the many comments in this thread, not to mention other threads on this topic, a significant chunk of western leftists who are ML arrive at Marxism Leninism only after going through a more anarchist phase, and only through a lot of examination of the world and themselves, coupled with a lot of study and reading, do they move from anarchism to come to recognize the undeniable accuracy of Marxism Leninism to reflect the real world and to offer an actually-working methodology for revolution.

Your fallacious description of people's process towards becoming Marxist Leninists as being the same sort of way that poor, ignorant, emotionally needy people latch onto a cult, is ridiculous, and the kind of things liberals like to say of all of us on the anticapitalist left to comfort themselves into maintaining their simplistic "I'm right but they're wrong" worldview and avoid having to engage with the many real reasons people become anticapitalists. But that's what you're doing. Don't be like the liberals. Try to understand the real why of things, don't make up nice little bedtime stories that ensure you don't have to examine your own misconceptions.

And some of them just get born into it.

No one is born into Marxism Leninism, anarchism, or any other ideology, and saying that is a grotesquely anti-anarchist thing to say.

And to add to that, when first coming to realize the lies you've been told by the state you live under, it is a lack of nuance to immediately jump to the false premise that just because your state is bad, that must mean all states are bad. That's just the easy and childish answer. That doesn't make it inherently wrong, but it does make it the one that requires further examination and sometimes a hard look at ones misconceptions. MLs are the ones who have done that hard work, not the ones who have fallen for the easy, un-nuanced end point. As someone else here went into a lot of detail describing but I can't find at the moment, the typical and more easy trajectory for a young leftist is to go from disillusionment at their own state to anarchism. It is only after a lot more learning, examination, and recognition of nuance, that a person comes to see that the understandable kneejerk reaction that "all of them are evil!" is naive, simplistic, and totally lacking the nuance these things need.

It takes more internal work to conclude that "oh wow, all these other things I assumed were just the flat truth, common knowledge, - like how evil the communist states were and how bad they were for their people - were actually just more lies I was being told for a reason." Which is why we have so many young anarchists who over time become ML's but only rarely the other way around. @WatDabney@lemmy.dbzer0.com has it exactly backwards.

Because even if the statement was hyperbole when referring to the majority of the tankie population, it still rings true for some of them- an inconvenient truth that you outright denied initially and were forced to backpedal on/reframe.

Most rational people are going to see this, see someone obviously using hyperbole, see someone obfuscating reality to serve their purposes, and dismiss you outright.

Beyond that, while it IS hyperbole to say tankies as a monolith believe in executing political dissidents, it is NOT hyperbole to say tankies as a monolith continue to support several states which DO believe in executing political dissidents.

Marxists and anarchists support using violence against fascists, capitalists, landlords, slavers, etc. The major difference is that Marxists acknowledge the utility of the state for doing so, while anarchists go for more horizontalist structures (even if they also end up forming states and semi-states, like the Spanish anarchists did). The idea that either of us want to wholesale slaughter everyone that disagrees with us is just fantasy, though.

What observational truth? The people in the OP aren't as the user described. The number of people that meet the definition given is close to nil on the Fediverse, yet people get called a tankie all the time.

"Tankie" is just a pejorative for those who uphold existing socialist states as legitimate, which covers the large majority of Marxists and a decent number of anarchists. The people in the OP are "tankies" by the definition I gave, it's consistent and clear. They uphold existing socialist states as legitimate, and this is the norm among Marxists.

Call out whatever you like, it's going to backfire, because what I'm saying is more in line with reality. Unless your point is that Marxism itself is extremist and therefore "tankie," calling the norm position among Marxists extremist isn't particularly useful.

We’re not talking about nuanced Marxist thinkers, we’re taking about people who think “Just line everyone who doesn’t accept my exact interpretation of communism up against the wall” is rational praxis.

This is the original comment I replied to, which is a strawman. The people that think “Just line everyone who doesn’t accept my exact interpretation of communism up against the wall” is rational praxis don't exist in any significant numbers, yet the word "tankie" is thrown around willy nilly these days.

There are plenty of ways to rationally arrive at Communism, but really the only way to get to Tankie is, as the top comment says, rejecting Western propaganda in favor of the propaganda of so-called “communists”.

This argument is that existing socialist states aren't to be trusted and are equally bad, but becoming a communist isn't just about agreeing with a nice picture of it in our heads, but to also see what communists have done in real life.

The original comment was itself a strawman, and you didn't offer any compelling argument beyond "extremists exist," which is true but not relevant. We aren't talking about outliers, but a common phenomenon, that being communists on the fediverse that uphold existing socialist states and are called "tankies" for it.

I processed the situation fully, you're getting lost in the sauce a bit here. I'll spell it out for you paragraph by paragraph though:

Because even if the statement was hyperbole when referring to the majority of the tankie population, it still rings true for some of them- an inconvenient truth that you outright denied initially and were forced to backpedal on/reframe.

This is the point I made about outliers existing, I didn't outright deny that they did in my original comment. The ones it rings true for, the "outliers," are an extreme minority. I wasn't forced to backpedal on it, when you interpreted my comment as denying their existence I clarified for you.

Most rational people are going to see this, see someone obviously using hyperbole, see someone obfuscating reality to serve their purposes, and dismiss you outright.

See, the problem with this statement is that I didn't do that.

Beyond that, while it IS hyperbole to say tankies as a monolith believe in executing political dissidents, it is NOT hyperbole to say tankies as a monolith continue to support several states which DO believe in executing political dissidents.

That's not what the original comment said, though. "Executing political dissidents" like using state violence against fascists and sabateurs is supported by the overwhelming majority of Marxists, but that was not the statement made:

Just line everyone who doesn’t accept my exact interpretation of communism up against the wall” is rational praxis

This is what you're now interpreting as any "executing of political dissidents." It's true that Marxists are revolutionary, and support using the state to protect that, but it isn't true that there's a significant number of us that want to line everyone up against the wall for thought crime.

I wouldn’t color myself an anarchist necessarily, but I do find myself increasingly believing that anarchists are, for the most part, some of the only internally consistent ideologues. Fuck all states seems to be the only reasonable position when all existing states fucking suck.

I really don't care what you think about this considering your lack of understanding the current argument being made to begin with. Marxism is internally consistent, whether someone misinterpreting an argument believes so or not.

You are right that we cannot know and understand the life of every individual in a group, but we may observe typical or aggregate behavior, and we may seek reasonable inferences.

Tankies express a general pattern of behavior that is bad faith.

They quote passages instead of explaining from personal comprehension. They attack individuals against an opportunity to discuss ideas. They defer to doctrine instead of reasoning independently. They anchor to absurd lies about anarchists. They lie and deny instead of admitting to problems. They rely on disingenuous rhetoric such as the motte-and-bailey fallacy.

Such observations converge on a pattern of anchoring to convictions for reasons that are unrigorous, prejudiced, and generally misguided.

why one would deliberately praise any authoritarian system this hard.

To quote Bertrand Russell: "Much that passes as idealism is disguised hatred or disguised love of power."

To put it simply, a lot of tankies crave power but just don't want to admit. They are simply faux concerning for their own ulterior motive. I saw a meme from one of the .ml instances stating that communism simply "wants to improve" society. But I was like: didn't you guys suppress free elections and speech and persecuted anyone who simply disagrees at the slightest?

It's not uncommon for many authoritarian communists to eventually become fascists, especially after the end of the Cold War. The ex-leader of Red Army faction became neo-fascist in 2000s. A local politician in my country ran on xenophobic platform, but was a member of a Marxist-Leninist party in the 1970s. All that said, it means these people simply run on whatever ideologies, so long as they can attain power for power's sake.

    Edit: grammar

Communists don't crave power, and if your only point to that is that we recognize the necessity of employing state power against literal fascists, landlords, capitalists, sabateurs, etc, then you're implicitly making the point that we should let these groups run free for a sense of greater "freedom," even if these groups murder us and re-establish the very system that so immiserated us to the point of revolution in the first place. You're handcuffing yourself.

In reality, communists become so because of disaffections with present capitalist systems, and seek answers from Marx, Engels, Lenin, etc. The fact that some party members are opportunists doesn't make that a fact of communism. This kind of psycho-analysis doesn't hold any water when measured against real communist movements, both in successful socialist nations and in communist parties in capitalist nations.

the necessity of employing state power against literal fascists, landlords, capitalists, sabateurs, etc, then you're implicitly making the point that we should let these groups run free for a sense of greater "freedom,"

Firstly, fascists came much later as response to the growth of communist movements. Communism did not start to prevent fascists, it's the other way around, not that I am condoning the latter but this is simply the historical truth.

Second, Marxist Leninist communists killed even other different flavour of communists. A famous example were the Kronstadt sailors who simply wanted actual horizontal distribution of power like free and fair electione, and actual worker-run businesses. Instead, the Marxist-Leninist Bolsheviks killed them in the name of "vanguardism", ie to maintain state power that you just invoked. The state power is merely the centralisation of power and authority for the few.

In reality, communists become so because of disaffections with present capitalist systems, and seek answers from Marx, Engels, Lenin, etc. The fact that some party members are opportunists doesn't make that a fact of communism.

Yes, yes, theory, theory and all that; but that doesn't ignore the fact that empirical realities negate the idealism that communism purport to espouse. Going back to Bertrand Russell's quote: it quite literally is a veiled attempt to grab power. Actions and end results must comply with idealism but alas, that didn't happen even in communism.

I'm aware that fascism became more of a thing towards the 20s and 30s, my point is that fascists existed in the form of fascist partisans in socialist systems and infiltrators.

Secondly, you're absolutely butchering what happened at Kronstadt. Stepan Petrichenko, the leader of the rebellion, tried to join the White Army before the Kronstadt Rebellion, and joined the White Army after it failed, under general Wrangel. The White Army was a tsarist, anti-communist group. We also know that Petrichenko attempted to instill paranoia among the sailors by lying about Bolsheviks executing strike leaders.

Ignoring the will of the leaders and manipulators of the rebellion, lets look at who this supported. Capitalist media positively reported on the rebellion before it even came to a head, the Bourgeoisie supported the movement as it weakened the Communist movement, causing division. Ignoring who wanted it to succeed, was what the rebels wanted feasible at this point in time? Absolutely not. The rebels wanted to dissolve the bolshevik influence over the revolution, fracturing it during a bloody Civil War. This would have doomed the revolution, it could not come to pass and not result in Capitalist victory over Socialism.

Was it possible for there to be a bloodless resolution? Perhaps, but it didn’t. The Bolsheviks did not have the strength to hold courts and answer said rebellion peacefully, nor could they grant the demands of the rebels. Ultimately, the rebels surrendered and turned on the leaders of the revolt.

They didn't want "free and fair elections," they explicitly wanted the bolsheviks disqualified from being elected and dissolved as a party. They didn't simply want "worker run businesses," they wanted special privledges in wartime. To pretend that this was all "in the name of vanguardism" and not a crisis of wreckers sabotaging the revolution is pure Red Scare fearmongering. The soviet system dramatically expanded democracy and solidified power in the hands of the working classes.

Yes, yes, theory, theory and all that; but that doesn’t ignore the fact that empirical realities negate the idealism that communism purport to espouse. Going back to Bertrand Russell’s quote: it quite literally is a veiled attempt to grab power. Actions and end results must comply with idealism but alas, that didn’t happen even in communism.

Communists reject idealism and vulgar empiricism, instead supporting dialectical materialist analysis that acknowledges the ability for us to unify theory with practice. Having ideals is not the same thing as idealism, which puts ideas over matter. Communism is absolutely, in no way "a veiled attempt to grab power," instead communists have managed to implement socialism in real life, warts and all, precisely to overthrow the oppressive systems of the past and implement socialism. This has resulted in the dramatic uplifting of billions of workers and peasants, fundamentally different from the results of capitalism.

Life expectancy in pretty much all countries drastically increased with industrialization.
"Extreme poverty" for that graph you're displaying is defined at living at less than $2.30 a day. In real life there's 16.6 million people in China living beneath their national poverty line, defined as 2,300 CNY a year, which is $328.74. Yeah, totally not extreme poverty.

But no worries, believe whatever b.s. you want.

Life expectancy not only increased due to industrialization, but land reform resulting in an end to famine, free healthcare and education, and nearly eliminating homelessness. Purchasing power is different in China, and as such 2,300 CNY gets you a lot further, and China has 1.4 billion people. More importantly, though, you can see that the number was over 90% in 1980, and this dramatic transformation was a deliberate effort.

I believe facts and statistics, and you're trying to minimize them now that I gave evidence for my claims. Keep moving the goalposts.

So then I guess just fuck those 16.6 million other people, huh? And no, $328.74 a year is extreme poverty, in pretty much every country. Something tells me it is not enough for a person to survive, even in China.

More importantly, though, you can see that the number was over 90% in 1980, and this dramatic transformation was a deliberate effort.

Yeah but didn't the Communists take over in like 1949 or something? So it took them 31 years to actually start caring about poor people, is what you're saying? Also are you sure that this wasn't due to the increase of wealth due to American corporations outsourcing all thier manufacturing to China? So when the country started letting American corporations expolit their population, then wages went up and people weren't dirt poor anymore, right? How exactly is that different than what we have in the west? I mean it seems like a bit of a conicidence that poverty in China drastically decreases when the country becomes far less communist and far more corportized.

I believe facts and statistics, and you’re trying to minimize them now that I gave evidence for my claims. Keep moving the goalposts.

I just find that when you have to bend what those facts and statistics actuallly say in order to whitewash the reputation of a totalitarian government that doesn't give two shits about poor people to be completely disengenuous, and it makes me think tankies are a bunch of pampered self-rightous know-it-alls who've never actually been in the real world and would be the first persons to freak out if they actually were living under the totalitarian governments they somehow feel compelled to suck off.

I mean, China sucks. The soviet union sucked. I don't know why people defend those governments.

No? The living conditions in China are rapidly improving, and the number of impoverished is rapidly decreasing. This is intentional. It isn't "fuck these people," there are still underdeveloped rural areas that are still being uplifted, though the worst among them were fixed (see The Metamorphosis of Yuangudui).

Yeah but didn’t the Communists take over in like 1949 or something? So it took them 31 years to actually start caring about poor people, is what you’re saying? Again, no, China was extremely poor in 1949. It was coming out of World War II and a bloody civil war, and it also was a mostly agrarian country. And no, Reform and Opening Up was not soley responsible for that wealth, industrialization and social programs like free healthcare and education already existed under Mao.

As capitalism monopolizes, it is compelled to expand outward in order to fight falling rates of profit by raising absolute profits. The merging of bank and industrial capital into finance capital leads to export of capital, ie outsourcing. This process allows super-exploitation for super-profits, and is known as imperialism.

In the People's Republic of China, under Mao and later the Gang of Four, growth was overall positive but was unstable. The centrally planned economy had brought great benefits in many areas, but because the productive forces themselves were underdeveloped, economic growth wasn't steady. There began to be discussion and division in the party, until Deng Xiapoing's faction pushing for Reform and Opening Up won out, and growth was stabilized:

Deng's plan was to introduce market reforms, localized around Special Economic Zones, while maintaining full control over the principle aspects of the economy. Limited private capital would be introduced, especially by luring in foreign investors, such as the US, pivoting from more isolationist positions into one fully immersed in the global marketplace. As the small and medium firms grow into large firms, the state exerts more control and subsumes them more into the public sector. This was a gamble, but unlike what happened to the USSR, this was done in a controlled manner that ended up not undermining the socialist system overall.

China's rapidly improving productive forces and cheap labor ended up being an irresistable match for US financial capital, even though the CPC maintained full sovereignty. This is in stark contrast to how the global north traditionally acts imperialistically, because it relies on financial and millitant dominance of the global south. This is why there is a "love/hate" relationship between the US Empire and PRC, the US wants more freedom for capital movement while the CPC is maintaining dominance.

Fast-forward to today, and the benefits of the CPC's gamble are paying off. The US Empire is de-industrializing, while China is a productive super-power. The CPC has managed to maintain full control, and while there are neoliberals in China pushing for more liberalization now, the path to exerting more socialization is also open, and the economy is still socialist. It is the job of the CPC to continue building up the productive forces, while gradually winning back more of the benefits the working class enjoyed under the previous era, developing to higher and higher stages of socialism.

I just find that when you have to bend what those facts and statistics actuallly say in order to whitewash the reputation of a totalitarian government that doesn’t give two shits about poor people to be completely disengenuous, and it makes me think tankies are a bunch of pampered self-rightous know-it-alls who’ve never actually been in the real world and would be the first persons to freak out if they actually were living under the totalitarian governments they suck off.

I'm not bending any facts or statistics, the fact is that you have no idea what you're talking about and it's abundantly clear to anyone that has actually researched the topic. The casual homophobia at the end really seals the deal.

I mean, China sucks. The soviet union sucked. I don’t know why people defend those governments.

People defend them because they don't and didn't suck, simple as that.

I empathize with some of the thinking, but I don't necessarily agree with it. To keep it simple, imagine how many different world powers are working to sabotage openly Socialist and Communist governments. What kinds of tools and resources might these world powers have at their disposal? I can't imagine being part of a disfavored leftist government and not becoming haggard and paranoid beyond reason.

I break it down like this:

Free-for-all Capitalism has gotten us this shit state.

Free for all Communism has never worked in any meaningful way. Now, the always ready retort is "it's never had the chance to!" to which I'd reply: it never will. If it can compete with other forms of governance let it rip, but.... ? where is the success story?

Democratic Socialism has worked for the US already: the new deal, labor rights, Social Security, 40hr work week, etc., et.c,

/then came the 80s.. reaganomics destroyed unions, made education a gamble... conservatives saw a path to reducing it all.

Democratic Socialism works very well in other countries all over the world: they recognize there are certain services that are critical to provide in order for democracy to function: fire, police, healthcare, disability affordances, so many things that government is uniquely situated to promote and provide.

I'm happy to change from free-for-all-capitalism, welcome it, but you can't point to a hypothetical end point that's never ever existed AND won't be allowed to exist as long as resources require capital.

"oh that's not socialism, it's communism but won't admit it to itself" is the weakest shit excuse I've ever fucking heard in my life.

I would argue that Democratic Socialism works somewhat better than the perverse form of capitalism that exists today. It does have its flaws also. See the increasing surveillance of the population in the EU that is being pushed by politicians as a start.

At some point in the future, socialism will fail just like every other form of governance humans have devised.

Social democracy (what you call democratic socialism) in the EU depends on imperialism to function. The reason it's deteriorating and pushing to the far-right is because of the decay in imperialism. This is a consequence of the capitalist nature of social democracy, not something that would be applicable to socialism. Socialism one day will emerge, and from it communism will, as contradictions within socialism as resolved.

The problem is that this is false. Socialist countries led by communist parties have consistently brought dramatic, radical improvements over what came before in a way that far surpasses any upsides of capitalism. Metrics like life expectancy, in many cases, increase by 50-100%, poverty rates plummet, land reform helps end famine where it was once common (a huge part of life expectancy increases), and their economies are democratized in a way that fundamentally doesn't exist in capitalist countries. Socialism works.

Communism is a post-socialist stateless, classless, moneyless society. Communist parties have always governed socialist countries, because communism has not yet been achieved, and is itself a global phenomenon.

Not sure what you mean by "free for all."

Democratic Socialism works very well in other countries all over the world: they recognize there are certain services that are critical to provide in order for democracy to function: fire, police, healthcare, disability affordances, so many things that government is uniquely situated to promote and provide.

You're confusing social democracy for socialism. Social safety nets within the boundaries of capitalism are not socialism, socialism is not when the government does stuff. Capitalism is a mode of production characterized by private ownwership as the principle aspect of the economy and capitalists in control of the state, with socialism being public ownership as principle and the working classes in charge of the state.

"Democratic Socialism" itself is a a vague term. Socialism is already democratic, rule by the majority is a necessity when the working class is in control of the state. What it ends up meaning in practice is socialism relying heavily on electoralism and reformism, such as in Chile under Allende and in Venezuela.

The important factor here is that the social democracies that are doing the best, their safety nets are largely funded by imperialism and unequal exchange. These are not internally driven systems, but closer to landlords in country form towards the global south. Now that imperialism as a global system is weakening, we can actually track the erosion of safety nets in these social democracies, and in the general shift to the far-right.

I’m happy to change from free-for-all-capitalism, welcome it, but you can’t point to a hypothetical end point that’s never ever existed AND won’t be allowed to exist as long as resources require capital.

We can point to the real existing socialism in the real world and uphold their gains. No socialist country has been perfect, of course, all have had problems and struggles. They have, however, always been progressive and emancipatory as compared to what came before, and more effective at providing for their people compared to peer capitalist countries, without relying on imperialism.

because it's shameful. it invites shame and ridicule.

being correct is good. being wrong is bad. people don't want to be bad.

being comfortable with wrongness, fault, etc, requires a lot of education and maturity that very few people ever attain. and it also requires having an ego that can tolerate the ridicule/rejection that comes with admitting fault you will receive from a lot of people, which is kind of a lonely position. admitting you are wrong is opening yourself up to social rejection.

basically if you never admit you are wrong you can hang out with other like minded morons and never feel alone and sad. hence why such communities tend to be so emotionally compelling for people, and so hard to get out of. you have to be willing to go be alone to break out of such mindsets, and as social animals, a lot of human beings are pathologically afraid of being alone.

Well for sure one of the reason is that even in non marxist communities they show up and write comments in a style that many people resonate with. I mean using citations, good grammar, appealing to logic, (seemingly) good argumentations etc.

This makes them look reasonable and even if you do not read all their sources, you might remember their comments and talking points in a pretty positive light.

I dont want to say this style of arguing is bad, but I think it gets valued higher than arguments based on intuition and emotion with a less "scientific" style, because that is what many people are taught when growing up, going to school etc.

Also I would like to say, in some cases this "showing up" is done in a way that feels invasive to (parts of) communties. Like an online version of Jehovas Witnesses.

I really dig that they often "show their receipts"and I'll always take someone with citations more seriously than those without. I think it's prudent to be even more sceptical of those replies, though, as it's far more likely they have an agenda. That agenda might be as benign as educating others (it's often why I cite), but it's still best to think critically about the context, text, and subtext of their narrative.

That's exactly the complaint against tankies. Tankies are specifically authoritarian "communists", who defend the violent enforcement of "communism" by authoritarian states. Tankies explicitly want to control others who do not share their beliefs, that's the material distinction between a tankie specifically and a Communist in general.

"Tankie" is just a pejorative for those who recognize and uphold the legitimacy of existing socialist states. If you ask any self-described leftist if they support socialists stopping fascists, murderers, slavers, landlords, etc through violent means, 99% will support it. Marxists do not wish to "contril others who do not share their beliefs," but instead recognize that the state violence committed against genuine fascists, slavers, sabateurs, imperialists, and so forth in real life was and is necessary. Anarchists also wielded force against fascists in Spain, but "Tankie" is reserved as a special pejorative for those who also uphold the socialist state projects.

because they aren't liberals, in the libertarian sense.

they don't want freedom, they want control of other people. freedom of belief and others having different belief is viewed as a threat to be met with hostility. other people being different, acting different, etc is all viewed this way.
