The fact that it's a quarter to 11 and the AP only just called the race for Mazzei gives me some hope for '28 and '30 and maybe even '32. Every county in Oklahoma voted for Trump in '24. This was a state Trump won by 34 points.

Maybe the turd receptacles who keep voting to keep this place a total shit hole will mostly be dead in 10 years, and those of us who care about bettering the places where we live instead of abandoning them can actually get some work done.

that would be nice, but there's been a concerted effort to turn young men into Nazis. can't just count on natural death to purge the world of poison. teach local girls how to set up a hunting accident and the joys of either lesbianism or taking care of thirty cats.

Texas has been red for over three decades. The state was a key part of the Southern Strategy, because packing the 5th circuit court of appeals with conservative judges was a big part in overthrowing longstanding liberal legislation.

Texas provides a direct pipeline to the 5th circuit, and they also needed to pack a local district court too. So all of the legislation they hate can get litigated in that district court, seen by a batshit crazy conservative judge, and get a batshit crazy conservative ruling. And then any appeals will go to the 5th circuit court of appeals, where it will land in front of another batshit crazy federal judge. And when that batshit crazy federal judge makes a batshit crazy ruling, it goes into effect nationwide unless the SCOTUS overturns it.

Seriously, basically every time you see some kind of “federal judge overturns the every person gets a free puppy and our farts all magically smell like cotton candy law, and reinstates the livestream puppies getting fed into the Puppy Masher 9000 and we all have uncontrollable diarrhea law instead” type of news story, it’s coming out of the 5th circuit court of appeals.

Texas got hit hard by conservative propaganda as a result, because it has been instrumental as a weapon for conservatives to overturn liberal legislation. Let’s not let perfect be the enemy of progress.

Even though I hate Greg Abbott and everything he stands for, the dude very obviously hates Donald Trump and MAGA, and genuinely relishes the rule of law (even though he manipulates it to benefit his donors). I think Abbott conceded so early to send a message to other Replicans who may be considering "election fraud" shenanigans. I think he hates that shit.

I didn't realize the scope of what you were saying when you first posted, but I do now.

It wasn't just the governorship or the US Senate, the Dems swept the state and even gained control of the Texas supreme court and state house. Rs got some wins in the US House and state senate -- and all the rest of the races turned blue.

Incredible accomplishment against overwhelming odds and cheats, and it's a great win for a great state. Really, really happy for Texans today!

    I think this changes everything.

Texas has been a non-voting State for decades. This shows what is possible, and that scares Republicans.

    Good. I hope they're terrified.

Talarico just put all these down ballot mostly unknown and extremely underfunded candidates on his shoulders and shit stomped the Republican party. If he isn't the next Dem nominee for president I'll eat my cowboy hat.

The lineup is stacked for Democrats going into 2028. There are so many options -- AOC, Talarico, El-Sayed, hell even Michelle Obama if we just want an auto-win. This midterm win sets the next Dem President up so well. I wonder if we could make Senate control filibuster-proof supermajority in '28.

I knew Talarico could do it the very first time I heard him speak over 2-years-ago. He has a solid platform and packages it in a way anyone can understand, including religious conservatives.

Why is Michelle Obama ever mentioned as a presidential candidate? She hasn’t been elected to any position yet. She’s completely unproven as far as being a politician.

Because she terrifies Republicans for starters.

To your points, I really don't care about whether she's held governor or Senate position, etc. -- there have literally been over a dozen US Presidents who held neither. Being First Lady for 8 years, Running the East Wing, and having the counsel of her husband as First Gentleman would be more than enough experience — far more than any of the other candidates I listed I'd contend.

More importantly, I am looking for charisma and moral integrity, which she has both in droves. Expertise can be sought by her hand-picked cabinet of experts of course. That's what her personal team is for.

Michele caved to the special interests just like her husband did for her “move” campaign.

The little she’s done has not been promising. And there’s no reason to believe “she terrifies republicans.” I don’t think they’re terrified of people who take bribes from the same companies they do.

Honestly, if that's really all one has for dirt on her, that isn't much to me. I think I'll revert back to my aforementioned points as largely superseding.

Put another way, given her historical polling against Trump, I and any sane individual would've taken her over Trump or any Republican any time, any place.

It's an effective tool, I think they need to dispense with the written filibuster and return to oral. If you are passionate enough that you want to stop a bill on your own, be prepared to blather

Agreed, I think this is the way. It's also somewhat self-limiting of senile geriatrics, incapable of standing for sustained lengths of time.

    The lazy filibuster must go.

And that may be in reach, given we're past tie-breaking defecting traitors like Sinema.

Honestly, I think I would bet mine, or at least half of it. There is no figure more more popular in the Democratic tent than her, and nobody who ever polled higher against Trump's 10 years in the spotlight than her. While sexism is sadly a thing in this country, I think the Venn Diagram of legitimate sexists who'd refuse to vote for a woman solely on that is a circle with those core maga Trumpers who refuse to defect to this day and thus wouldn't for any Democratic candidate, even old white male Biden.

Not exactly my preferred pick in terms of policy, and it doesn't seem like she wants it but who knows. Her husband made similar comments in 2006.

  • Hmm. Yeah, when you put it that way I can see you've got a point. She's in her early 60s so that's on her side. And her husband is a known quantity - rightly or wrongly, people are going to assume she would be on a similar path in terms of perspectives and policies. Anyone who can get the Dem voters out. . . well, some people are better than others, but they're all better than trump.

I guess it wasn't a full 2 years ago after reviewing the dates in my case. Talarico had some emergent viral moments on the national stage when he and other Texas state lawmakers protested Republican redistricting efforts to skew House race outcomes (and what set off the reactionary response from California).

He threaded the needle flawlessly in resonating between AOC/Sanders/Mamdani-loving progressives, as well as more rural religious conservative given his packaged folksy charm. If I was to ever run for office, my platform and communication strategy would've always mirrored his approach (though maybe with a tad bit more El-Sayed bullishness sprinkled in appropriately). He frames wealth inequality and corruption within biblical context, which even though I'm not religious I respect utilizing the rhetoric for good.

Texas has never been that red. The GOP first took over the state legislature in 2003 riding Bush's 9/11 bump.

And the first thing they did was a mid-decade gerrymander, and the Dems tried fleeing the state to prevent quorum. Sound familiar?

And it was way worse than what they did last year. Between the 2002 and 2004 elections, Texas's US House delegation went from majority Democrat to 2/3 Republican with about the same number of voters for either party.

Then they started rolling out voter suppression schemes and catering to out-of-state Republicans. They imported a conservative base.

Plus the incoming Lieutenant Governor is a Democrat. And in the Texas governmental system, the Lieutenant Governor has a ton of power over the Senate, akin to the Senate Majority Leader in most other American systems: ability to set committee memberships, control the calendar, etc.

President Trump has this to say about Abbott a few minutes ago:

If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn’t have lost. He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Trump is also looking at a career change:
