Before upgrading my server to a DDR4 platform, I'm pretty sure I had bought the last 32 GB kit of DDR3 in the country. Dude at the store was surprised it was even there.

I’m surprised there’s even a store with a dude at it.

I've entered my crotchety old man phase early. Amazon has given me an unreasonable hatred of online shopping, and therefore I do everything in my power to find brick and mortar places to shop at.

I too am old. Your story reminds me of 25+ years ago when I would go to Fry’s and get a nice new board or card or whatever component. Now I order everything online.

When I was about 14 my dad got me my first computer from a local place where I'd been buying Warhammer. They were the only people in the area that sold either computers or Warhammer, and they sold nothing except those two things.

I remember it wouldn't turn on one day and I asked my dad to take it back to them to get it fixed. Nearly all of the data on it turned out to be irretrievable and it came back with nothing left on it but the operating system and two or three 144p porn clips I'd downloaded. I seem to remember backing those up on a floppy disk afterwards, so they might even still be at my parents house somewhere!

    Happy times.

My local Fry's had the best motherboard and CPU combos back when AMD and Intel were relatively competitive with each other still.

We have a Microcenter but it's nearly a hour away, one way

It's really frustrating. Many years ago, my older brother helped me get a new GPU, buying it from a nice online store. Some years later I used it when buying hardware and it was so good compared to all the established stores, instead of pushing promos everywhere it made it easy to browse, find and buy products, because oh god are those big stores shitty. Just having a responsive website with filters, reasonable element sizing and a straightforward checkout process stands out.

A few years after that, when I used it again, noticed something peculiar, as they added lootboxes. And I don't mean physical surprise boxes or something, they added digital lootboxes to get random discounts on products, with a premium subscription that gets you a better pool of discounts. That is a level of "what the fuck" that's just stunning. And they might still have the best service, which combined with inertia of it being my goto store makes things rather difficult.

I've got great news for you!

Because of the soaring prices for DDR5/4 the DDR3 wasn't spared either, so you can join in on the fun!

Not to the same extent, but still...

You laugh but I'm pretty sure only ddr2 and below was unaffected because its quite literally a dead standard you'd only find hobbiests using.

ddr3 is still the primary option in a lot of 3rd world countries and the prices for those have also gone to crap.

3rd world? DDR4 came out what, shortly after 2020? And adoption was slow.

I ran my 3930K for a decade from 2012 to 2022 and then rebuilt the system into its final form with a 4960X and 32gb of the fastest DDR3 the mobo would take. Then two years ago I finally replaced it with a 7800X3D build. I didn't really have to. The 4960X/3070 did everything I threw at it. Except Cities Skylines, which is still one of my most played games, and thus, after 12 years, it was time.

If my last rig lasted me 12 years, my current 7800X3D/9070XT will last me two decades with the way things are currently. Felt like I wasted money spending $670 for a 9070XT Reaper. Now that same card is $1050.

Tldr; If you need a new rig, a time machine may be cheaper to develop. This shit is ass. Shit from an ass.

My 4690k diedast summer, just before the component prices started to skyrocket. Upgraded to a Ryzen 7 5800X with 96GB of DDR4 memory for $300. Mobo, SSD, wifi module, the whole works.

I couldn't believe how 16GB of DDR4 was listed on Kijiji for $250 like just a month later.

I was considering this but put it off as I'd just built a new file server paying 100 apiece for 2 TB NVMe drives. I'm not sure if I won or lost, but my FX-8350 keeps plugging along.

DDR3 is still totally viable for many applications, no worries there!

Still got a 16GB i7-4790k system in the loft. No PSU as moved that when upgrading. I expect motherboards are a bit difficult to get hold of for DDR3 systems now.

Hey, same processor as me, still stuck in its stock Dell motherboard. Still does what I need, but man is it disheartening trying to dream of upgrading these days

Hell, I just bought 128Gb of ECC DDR3 for one of my homeservers. I'm rich as Croesus!

How do I get rich off a large handful of 8gb ddr3 sticks? Barring that, how do I get a rig that can use em for cheap?

I have DDR4; I’m seeing good pairs of 8GB sticks in the speed I need in the <$150 range, but I think I’m gonna wait till Black Friday or Cyber Monday to snatch it up.
