Oh thank fuck.

Great news, not just for Brazil, but for the whole world.

But winning the election is just the first step. The more important part is that he uses his victory to deliver the results that he promised. If politicians did this better, we would never see a far right movement in the first place.

Let's hope we see it happen.

    Congratulations to Brazil!

Lula has a rather funny name, in English it would be something like Squid of the Woods. 🤣

That awkward moment when a president wins a fourth term but it's a good thing

Edit: Did really nobody understand this or did the tankies show up?

EDIT 2: This was crossposted to ML. I accidentally walked into the psych ward. I hope somebody shuts down ML. I really really deeply do.

Why, if the people democratically vote for someone why should they be artificially limited?

To prevent bad actors from consolidating power and corrupting the systems that keep those elections free and fair. Are term limits perfect? No. Do they solve more problems than they create? Probably.

I genuinely have no idea why you think lemmy.ml users would be mad about Lula winning or whatever. Am I misunderstanding? And cross posted articles have their own separate comment sections anyway, and everyone in the worldnews com of lemmy.ml is celebratory. https://lemmy.ml/post/54505143 https://lemmy.ml/post/54504170

You don't understand why dictator apologists would think that unlimited terms are acceptable?

I see now that you and the person who started this comment thread are continuing an argument from somewhere else about term limits where you might have, traumatically, wound up with a negative comment score or something. This, of course, means that lemmy.ml must be eradicated. You're perfectly reasonable.

No this is just yet another proof that lemmy.ml is full of trolls and mentally regressed who justify bad politics and ideas because of their own insuficiencies and trauma. It's a sad place more akin to r/incels but with political enlightenment flavor, though at least the incels keep to themselves.

Wonderful news, this is the first one this year the US couldn't electioneer.

Literal miracle. I was so expecting terrible news. Good for you Brazil.

Now hopefully Lula spends the next few years, well governing well of course, but also grooming new candidates to succeed him. Younger candidates. Don't want this to be a one-off. Got to build that next generation.

Speaking as a Brazilian who voted in Lula - not because I necessarily think he's the best, just the least worse - this final term of his will most likely be his worst. The congress and senate that was elected this year is atrociously far-right, most from the same party as Flavio. Lula won't be able to accomplish anything; at best he'll be able to hold the status quo until 2030 - which is good considering with Flavio we'd very likely have loss of rights and setbacks - and hopefully by then we'll have more reasonable candidates from the right, and maybe a better one than Lula in the left.

Honestly, his next government just needs to do two things: investigate and prosecute everyone involved in manipulating the elections; curb the influence and heavily regulate social medias here in Brazil. If they can do these two things, we're golden, we don't even need a direct successor.

Of course you do. One because Lula might have won but everything else was basically swept by the right wing so none of that investigation or prosecutions are going to make a whole lot of headway. But more importantly a power vacuum is a terrible idea. Because that's basically guaranteeing a right-wing resurgence.

I would bet money that seeing how Trump is doing right now is what made the difference. The Iran war is an international disaster and Bolsonaro was pretty tied in to trump. So if Trumps approval went down Bolsonaro might take a hit by proxy.

You do understand most people don't know anything about politics right? I'm not saying Bolsonaro and Trump are linked because they're both right wing. Bolsonaro and Trump are very publically involved/allied. Trump has no such close ties to Le Penn. The average voter is a moron. They don't know what ideologies are. They just know vibes. And Bolsonaro and Trump were openly posturing as being allies in a way that Le Penn is not.

a lot of people i talked to mentioned trump as one of their main concerns. i wouldn't bet it was the thing, but i think you'd have a chance to win that money.

...received 4.4m votes more than Bolsonaro, with a 51.79% share to his 45-year-old rival’s 48.21%.

A ~3.5 point margin; the popularity of far right ideology is scary right now...

Congrats to Brazil for remaining sane for another term.

A lot of people don't think about it much, they just think "it's an alternative to the current person in power, maybe it will work for the economy!", while overlooking the giant red flags. Same reason why Milei won in Argentina.

most people IRL that I know, voted for Bolsonaro, have the stated that their main reason is "Lula is corrupt, PT is corrupt"

from what I have seen online, there is A LOT of people who genuinely believe that the annulment of Lula's corruption charge was as conspiracy against opposition to PT and Lula, and that the inprisoment of Jair Bolsonaro was a continuation of this conspiracy, and widely claim that the elections are a fraud
