I love learning about cool stuff because of reading it's obituary!

What does this mean for Tuta and Proton?

Tuta and Proton's political circumstances are very different from Autistici/Inventati's.

    https://theintercept.com/2025/01/28/proton-mail-andy-yen-trump-republicans/

    https://cyberinsider.com/tuta-refutes-allegations-of-it-being-a-front-for-spy-agencies/

Maybe they're politically-neutral or maybe one or both are sabotaged somehow, but either way, they aren't explicitly anti-fascist.

Doesn't change the fact that if tomorrow trump wakes up and decides that they too provide services to "antifa terrorists" they could suffer the same fate.

The bigger part of this story, to me, is how everything (notably the DNS serverHold and termination of their bank account) happened without any judicial involvement. No court or judge ordered PIR or Banca Etica to act, yet they did, on nothing more than their inclusion on that list - and very earnestly, as its deadline was the 25th of September. There is nothing that could prevent the same happening to any service

  • They give away your data to authorities. It's simple - they give your data to authorities.

    Protonmail guy official likes Trump.

Tuta will do whatever German gov says.

They will satisfy any legal requests. And it's not even alt right vs far left - I don't think they care.

I missed something. Who are they and why were they targeted as "terrorists" by Trumpistan?

    so selfhost it.

don't disregard a good tool that is selfhostable because the founder is bad.

it's not like he's getting money from users or server admins.

We cannot engage in a fight or expose ourselves to manipulations that threaten the lives of these people and their loved ones

That's exactly what they were hoping for.

Their 25 year history of resistance included multiple instances of server seizures, among other things. A little knowledge of their history would tell you this was hardly the "first sign of any authoritarian action".

The pressure they've stood up to in the past suggests they may have been facing threats this time that go beyond what has been widely publicised.

That's easily said as someone not sanctioned by the US, but consider that they're still humans with lives. You can't expect people to suddenly give up their and their families' abilities to live a normal life to fight a foreign fascist regime. Huge respect if they do. But I haven't done it and presumably neither have you, so we really shouldn't judge.

I was truly hoping they'd figure out a way to stay up. It's kinda terrifying however that the most powerful nation in the world can simply turn the "eye of sauron" on you without even a court judgement or anything, and ruin your life anywhere in the world. I can't blame them for taking this route. If the whole fucking US Empire targeted our little instance as a goddamn terrorist organization, I'd probably do the same as well.

Flow like water. I hope the people running it will distribute to new orgs and run things under a thousand new names.

What makes you think they haven't flagged everyone associated with the instance as terrorists?

They've made it clear that every antifascist is a terrorist, and an enemy of the US gov. That's not gonna change because you take down a server.

Thank you to Autistici/Inventati for the 25 years of public service. Death to AmeriKKKa and all oppressors.

    Terrifying.

No courts, no appeals, just a signature from an unaccountable maniac and you're done.

    They control the money

Could someone point me to how they run their service ? I mean technically. I am also interested in what harship they faced and how they responded. Do they have docs ? I may or may not know some peoples that loves open source and this kind of infrastructure ;)

Plus it would be a waste to loose all that work. Some folks are interested?

(I am the person OP cross-posted from)

Old style ISP setup of sorts. Shouldn't be quantum science to replicate on most Unixes. Maybe even use Unix users themselves as a unit to wire everything up with SMTP and WebDAV. And a tiny bit of CGI in basically any programming language whatsoever to do the request forms (requests generate a long string of characters in a link you are supposed to keep and check from time to time). Apart from technical, also the privacy policy and a few hopes and dreams are keeping it together.

They haven't migrated GitLab to inventati.org when the autistici domain got (auto?)nuked, so to see what stuff they forked you gotta do nslookup git.inventati.org then add the addresses to your OS hosts file:

    2a01:4f8:231:40ae::198 git.autistici.org
    88.99.75.198 git.autistici.org

Turn off proxies in your browser and you should be good to go. For now

Was T_T... A radical server network giving alternative services to individuals and collectives, similar to riseup, sindominio and other antifascist projects.

I’m a bit lost on this one. Who designated it? I’d never heard of it before this article. I checked the Sec of State terrorist list and it’s not there.
