I think he's just incompetent at running such a large company. He got lucky with Facebook, and that success masked his incompetence. Now that the landscape is shifting, his incompetence is becoming apparent. He dove head-first into the so-called metaverse and even renamed his company for it. That was a bad bet. Now he's followed the rest of the idiots into AI, and isn't handling it as well as them. Doesn't matter, the whole thing will come crashing down. Apple is the only major tech company that held back and that's looking like the right move, now.

It will be interesting to see who is left standing in a couple of years. Well Meta shrink back to only Facebook, or will the damage be too great and the whole company dissolves. With Mark at the helm, I'm betting the latter.

Not quite. He changed the name because "Facebook" was in the news too often with privacy controversies and he thought the name change would distance his company from that reputation. Seems it worked.

It's insecurity. He correctly understands that Facebook, and all social media is vapid, low tech bullshit. He badly wants to be seen as a visionary and an innovator and a tech ubermensch. Not just some dude who caught lightning in a jar with a slightly polished, pervy version of Myspace.

funny thing recently an article came out about how all these tech billionaires, zuck, thiel, altman, google is keeping thier children away from the brainrot, and making sure they get monteserri schooling away from the tech. they wont touch thier own poison. its like the mcdonalds ceo that wont eat thier own product.

Facebook/meta was very early in the "AI" space. They built lots of tools and models being widely used right now. Just look at their popular github repos, faiss, SAM, vision transformers, visual embeddings, core ML libraries, all very essential components of many ML systems.

Saying facebook "just" dove into AI is wrong, facebook has been there from the early days along with Google (and probably some more) in building the very foundations these stupid LLMs "thrive" on

As long as it's destroyed, I don't mind what Zuckerberg intended.

Is it possible to jailbreak it?

Doesn't it require Facebook login? I think that's what some people would need a jailbreak for (and the reason I'd never buy one)

I have a Quest2. They did briefly try that shenanigans, but the backlash was so great that they decoupled it again. I deleted my FB account and it still works fine. You still need an Oculus acccount, or whatever they call it now. I haven't spent a cent in the oculus store. I bought VR Desktop on Sidequest, and use it solely for PCVR - mostly simracing. The native streaming, and Steam VR streaming are free, but they have too many compression artifacts imo. I get minimal Meta shitfuckery, so it's tolerable for now.

It's getting a bit long in the tooth, though, so I'm considering the Steam Frame if it isn't too expensive (hope springs eternal), so I can ditch the company entirely.

I think you need to create a horizon account maybe, but that's whatever, just make another email

You may be able to use it without an account, i'll check. Either way, it's the best value headset on the market

Peter Thiel is the only reason Facebook exists, he was an early angel investor and kept Facebook afloat, the bill had come due, zuck is doing this for Thiel, Thiel needs his data lakes for palantir to usher in his stateless surveillance state.

No, he’s just that terrible. Dude hasn’t had a successful original idea. Facebook wasn’t his original idea, and instagram and whatsapp were acquisitions. Everything else failed.

React sucks. It was built to solve facebook-scale problems that no one else really has.

Honestly I think he's just... a maximalist (there's probably a better word for it). Doesn't know how to be satisfied with immense success and wealth, so he wants to be integral to whatever the next thing is.

It's like a joke I saw here the other day, about being offered 10 trillion dollars or a chance to flip a coin for 21 trillion dollars, Zuck is flipping that coin again and again. Whether it's the metaverse or AI, he's come to terms with taking Ls on the chance to hit it unbelievably rich, even though, frankly, he's already as rich and influential as could possibly affect a person's life.

Silicon Valley kind of encourages maximalism. Companies are expected to grow and it is hard to grow beyond the monopoly you've built for yourself.

Also, not everyone is willing to take the deal where you go retire with your ballerina wife to go become a wildlife photographer. Some people like being a businessman.

No, he was always an autistic, Aspy weirdo who barely related to normal humans. Now he's so out of touch he has no idea what society looks like, or wants.

So he's just flailing randomly, desperately trying to look like he understands what he's doing, but he's clearly just throwing expensive wet stuff at the wall, and then throwing lots more money at it because it stuck a little, before finally figuring out it's just a stain. The good news is, at least he didn't waste all those billions on higher salaries.

He wants to hang with the big Sociopathic Oligarchs, but he's obviously in over his head. He's not a visionary, he bought or stole every successful element of his business, and ALL of his own initiatives have failed.

    He's officially a Loser.

Why are people baffled? The dude's an idiot, he's always been an idiot and will always be an idiot. Rich does not mean capable.

This is just more "if a company isn't growing faster than the S&P500 it's literally dying" logic.

I have no love for Zuck or Meta but if reality means anything then their stock price is still ridiculously inflated.

Remember, Zuckerberg is literally a totalitarian despot. The Facebook corporate structure was built so he could never be fired. He owns a controlling share of the company. He can literally do whatever he wants. In his kingdom, he is an absolute monarch.

This is not a good thing. When you don't have to worry about ever being replaced, you inevitably surround yourself with yes-men who will tell you what you want to hear. There's a reason autocracies all end up collapsing eventually.

Shouldn’t the title be: Is Zuckerberg trying to DESTROY his own company? Seems the caps put the emphasis on the wrong word.
