Everyone knows a cornerstone principle of the Fediverse was that there should be secret ban lists baked into the website's frontend that aligns to a single maintainer's ideology.

As long as that maintainer is me. I can't trust anyone else to do it. But all you lemmings need to just blindly accept my ruling. Trust me bro.

I don't block shit and I run wild. People that do that shit are lame unless you are being targeted. I will argue up to a point but like the sun worshipers say "pearls before swine" or the dead say "keep on truckin"

Why are you spamming the twiddling fingers reply to every comment?

Its one of the random things Admiral Patrick banned or would put out you you on a ban list for. Also I was at the beach and had just drank three white claws and it felt spiritually liberating to post that while YET ANOTHER of my ops went down in flames.

    I'll blame the whiteclaws

They are free to put whatever they want into their free software.

They are also free to be heavily criticised and ostracized for it.

Yes exactly BUT doing it secretly is malicious, abusive, deranged, and goes against core FOSS ideals

Theyre free to put it in their software but it shouldve been declared and documented not secret

But no then no one ever would have used it in the first place, a fact of which they were well aware

Yeah I'm sure he convinced him as elf it was for a good reason, and the idea isn't inherently bad.

The primary issue is the clear intention to hide it. If there was a notice when you first accessed tesseract that asked if you wanted to enable "Toxic Mode" as he called it, or if there was some sort of indication when posts were removed by the filter, many of the complaints would no longer apply. The fact it was enabled by default, and hidden buried into advanced settings under a question meant to be ignored, located and phrased like the bullshit useless Windows Settings helper stuff, just means he never intended it to really be found. If you have to hide it because you know people don't want it... You're not on the right side of the issue.

The fact he also included a DDOS script in the good ye notice is just proof everyone else was right. He's a piece of shit, regardless anything else. Only a true cuntwaffle does that.

Exactly, if he had made it public, perhaps even with a collaborative list, and with easy opt-in and out controls, it would have turned into a feature, rather than a mess.

I mean, look at uBlock or adblock plus, both support filter lists and it has turned into a massive selling point.

But he was too narrow minded to even consider that.

I read this earlier, some notes:

They're upset that people they thought would agree with this course of action "turned on them." There's clearly zero self reflection or consideration that maybe, just maybe, their actions were out of line and the community response was deserved (minus death threats, but I also don't really know if I believe that's true, because this person is obviously a lying, gaslighting asshat).

Everyone else, though, enjoy your toxic, xenophobic, knee-jerk-to-violence, purity-testing, and harassing-anyone-who-doesn’t-fall-in-line cess pit. One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn’t toe the line and you’ll be right where I am.

This idiot is whining about a self-inflicted wound, literally nobody gave a shit about what they said it's what they did.

Also note that they keep digging deeper into "I have to have the last word so I have to remove any and all ways for people to reply to me. I won, I know I did. They're just all out to get me." Just really pathetic conspiratorial thinking to justify the fact that they did something fucking idiotic and people took them to task for it.

Not one person would give a shit if they bitched about it on Lemmy, but "taking matters into their own hands" (as in the original post said "somebody had to!" because they had to don't you see? what a fucking lummox.) and not being open in an OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY.

EDIT: To really show the God Complex off they really should have ended with God's Final Message to His Creation:

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

EDIT II: Holy shit guys, the've actively built a way to DDOS dbzer0 into the dubvee page. How can anyone take this fucking walking pile of shit seriously? They have a raging hate boner and they're just lazily jerking it.

Exactly. It's Lemmy. I've had unpopular takes, I've had shit takes and hot takes... I take them all in stride. Let the downvotes hit, it's fine.

What I didn't do is go "ohyea you don't agree with me? I'll show you!!" and then try to censor their voices by using whatever power I had.

I feel like down votes/up votes aren't, or weren't, supposed to be the focus here. Heck, on Voyager, I hide the vote numbers. Why are fake Internet points so important to people??

But yeah, dude didn't even consider that maybe it's them that fucked up. Just doubled down and noped out to preserve their ego.

The votes represent, in some sense, a social consensus, and consensus actually does matter quite a lot to people.

If you ever see people arguing about which movie is objectively better than some other, that's what they're doing. They're fighting for social capital.

Seeing the social consensus can be legitimately useful in many situations outside subjective opinion though. YouTube dislikes are the classic example. They were a very reliable way to know when a tutorial was not worth your time.

  • Oh yeah, I don't hide them. Votes even on reddit can be a useful temperature check for audience engagement.

I do think it's funny when people whine about getting downvotes, though; it betrays just a little bit of discomfort with whatever else they're saying.

Taking things into one hands while trying to steer many communities with a heavy fist (blacklisting without admin’s knowledge) seems like very sociopathic behaviour. Hopefully he’s just a kid and will grow out of the childish behaviour what appears to boil down that we need him and he doesn’t need us? I don’t think he deserves death threats but AdmiralPatrivcks behaviour demonstrates reason #3221 why we need decentralization like the fediverse.

There are sociopathic individuals littered throughout society and corpos act socio if not more psychopathic while chasing the almighty dollar. When things happen in the corporate socials, they are driven by a topdown without the users even knowing what’s happening. This event has shown me that Lemmy can and will find those individuals that try to game the system can and will be held accountable. This is good news if you value autonomy and critical thoughts.

Im inclined to believe that there were death-threats. I dont agree with what this person did here, but it should be considered that there is a certain segment of the population that has sufficiently poor consideration for others or emotional regulation that they will send death threats to people that make them angry, and, importantly, while this segment may be more or less common in some groups, that tendency in itself does not force a person to hold or not hold a given view (even ideologies or ethical systems that condemn death threats, because plenty of people out there are hypocritical). As such, these people can be expected to exist in any sufficiently large group, to include whatever groups you, I, or anyone else consider to be an "in-group". The tesseract dev got a lot of people mad, so, it would honestly surprise me if they didnt get a few such threats just given the sheer number of chances for one of the angry people to be of the sort to send them. If anything, Id expect a shittier person to be slightly more likely to get them just because people like that tend to do more things that make people mad at them, though this should not be taken as saying that people that get death threats are necessarily shitty people or that they're deserved.

That stuff aside, Ive had mixed feelings about this whole affair. I do agree that the hidden blacklist thing was way out of line, but I find that most of the criticism Ive seen doesnt really give the right reason (in my point of view) for why it was out of line. (Namely, Ive seen a lot of it framed as "this is censorship, its wrong to make software that intentionally does not display posts from specific people/places". I dont think I really like this argument, because I think a lot of the people making it havent really considered the implications of it thoroughly. Its generally considered acceptable for users to block other users for example, for moderators to ban users from a community, and for instances to defederate from other instances if they feel the need, and these things also prevent one seeing the posts of affected users, they just happen at a different layer than tesseract did. It is censorship, yes, but one cant expect to be entitled to the attention of others, theres simply too many people that have things to say, even important things, for it to be otherwise, nobody can possibly pay attention to everyone, nor is it healthy to try, so there must be systems in place that allow one to ignore those one doesnt want to see in favor of those one does.

The problem in my view is one of consent: if tesseract had made it known upfront that using it without disabling some default setting also opted the user into its developer's personal blocklist, then, well, it wouldnt be much different than when people on microblog platforms share blocklists with others, or when people choose an instance based on that instance's federation decisions. I would not personally have wanted to use it, as I have different ideas of what I want to block and not block, but I dont think that in theory it would have been unethical for it to exist in that state. However, while the dev themself seems to have thought that they had done enough to make this feature known, based on one of their responses to the controversy at least, they clearly did not, else the public response to the list's exposure would not have been outrage so much as "well yeah, thats what that program does, dont use it".

Part of this I think is that while moderation decisions are expected of an instance, they dont tend to be expected from alternate UI software, so, what would have qualified as "making it known upfront" would necessarily have to have been been very blatant. As it was, they certainly didnt meet that bar, and it was very plausible for a new user to find tesseract and end up using this guy's list without knowing about it. This isnt something Ive seen come up in the angry response nearly as often as just "he's blacklisted people that I dont think ought to have been, doesnt he know blocking people is bad, what an authoritarian!". Though of course, I havent seen every post about this whole deal so its possible that I simply have missed that criticism and just seen the angry memes.)

While Ill agree that self-reflection in their part would have been the most desirable outcome, I dont think it was ever really a realistic one. I doubt that any but a small fraction of the population would really be capable of anything but defensiveness when they have managed to anger thousands of strangers into yelling at them, its not a situation that humans are really well adapted for or handle well, given that the conditions we arose in would not have allowed for it nearly as easily as those of today do. As such, I think that just leaving in frustration, while not a satisfying resolution or a perfect one, is probably the best ending that could reasonably hoped for here. The other likely outcome would have been doubling down further and keeping the anger going, and by leaving there's at least a chance that they might reflect on what happened once emotions have a chance to die down.

Yeah I think you missed the early discussion, which was all about "if you had just been honest and allowed admins to alter it, no one would have cared."

That fact that it specifically targets the LGBT community is also a huge aspect of why people are rightfully pissed

Its harder to explicitly say, but it also covers a wide swath of the people who were explicitly pointing out the relationship between Bidens ongoing failure to stop the genocide in Palestine and it's relationship with their failing electorally. This was a major and decisive theme in the period of 2024-2025. Both Admiral Patrick and major admins and mods fell on one side, the wrong side, of this issue with regards to using the platform to further their implicit agenda.

It's up there with "It's too close to an election to critique the party!" before the fucking primaries have even started.

I'm in my forties and I've heard that same worthless fucking line every election for 27 fucking years now.

So when's it gonna be time to critique them, huh?? Never I guess.

Also, the opposite of what you're suggesting happens, too. After the Election in 2024, in early 2025 a lot of people made accusations that those people "disappeared" from Lemmy. I remember because I called out that bullshit and called multiple people to the thread who had stood by their words and were still there, still standing up, and these asshats were pretending they didn't exist or must be paid actors. Ugh Ugh uGh.,

That still doesn’t excuse the DDOS.

And given how well he hid it, it’s obvious that he never intended that anyone see that list but him. That’s most of the ‘how dare he block so-and-so’ that I’ve seen; people mocking him for blocking them, yes, but they almost always tied it back to the fact that he was censoring the feeds of others without any kind of notification or opt-out for his users.

Saying ‘here’s my blocklist; if you don’t like it, you can toggle it off, or find another frontend’ is curating, and that’s okay. But deciding what others get to see because ‘you know best’ and hiding that list of people and instances you blocked so no-one can find out what they’re not being allowed to see is censorship, and it’s not okay.

    That’s fair.

But I also don’t think they did anything whatsoever to ‘let people know’ about the blocklist like they claimed. In fact, it seems to me from how much they tried to hide it that they never intended to share that they had one, at all.

As far as the death threats… meh, who knows? From all their comments, and their attempting to defend themselves in the third person using alt accounts, they seem to be quite a drama queen with only a loose connection to reality. They interpreted lots of rather rational comments back in the beginning of all this saying ‘dude, you can’t just force people to use your blocklist’ as vicious attacks against their person and character, so I can see them interpreting more aggressive ‘how dare you tell me what to do’ comments as actual threats against their person.

On the other hand, negative self-centered people tend to attract negative, self-centered people, and I can imagine that some of those might take… poorly to finding out they’d ended up on his blocklist for disagreeing with him. Especially if they had thought they were on the same side.
