I saw a video in which some characters of the Fallout tv show open a fridge and find an alien and just toss it out because they want the working fridge. I’ve never understood (or really bothered with) why Fallout had the nuclear “event” which triggered the use of the shelters. Was it an alien invasion?

In the lore, the "Zetans" have visited/researched Earth for at least a few centuries (the Mothership Zeta DLC for FO3 has you meeting different characters like a feudal samurai, a cowboy from the old west, and an astronaut from before the bombs dropped). They are not why the world ended though.

Before The Great War, international tensions were at an all-time high, with global resources dwindling to dangerous levels. The US fought a war against China and annexed Canada, which the US occupation was more like turning the entire country into one big internment camp. The real reason why the nuclear apocalypse happened hasn't been explained in any of the Fallout media yet, but it feels like the show is going to reveal it at some point if it didn't already. But that's also not really the point of the games/story of Fallout in general; the tagline is literally "War Never Changes" because it's about human nature.

You should watch the show. It's great and very accessible for someone who hasn't played the games. Plus it might give you the itch to try them out, and they're incredibly fun.

Considering all the "experimental" Vaults and whatnot, and how politically powerful Vault-Tec appeared to be, the vibe I get is that there might have been some sort of conspiracy.

I read a comment online saying the Fallout TV series implies that Vault Tec started WW3 and let the apocalypse begin all because they wanted to conduct vault experiments, I really hope that's not the actual reason, cuz that would be really stupid.

You're right, that would be really stupid, just like Americans fighting over guns in a zombie apocalypse (ammo and medicine are the real limited supplies, especially if you suck at fighting zombies), or killing off a couple percent of your population because wearing masks is uncomfortable. So it seems very plausible.

I don't really know anything about the zombie apocalypse stuff, but starting World War 3 is a chain of nuking that will kill billions and all of that for a bunch of Vault experiments? Come on!

Vault Tech's got enough money that they can easily conduct these experiments in isolated villages/towns or something without nuking the entire world.

Yes, but if you don't nuke everyone else to the stone age, or inches away from it, they could stop you. And why are you worried that a few billion people who don't matter will die? Everyone who matters, those with the money and power and those that are to be experimented on, are all in vaults, and will have no desire to leave for the nuclear wasteland.

why would it be stupid? this isn't 'implied'; that's literally the story. ignoring that the Fallout TV show is really just an incoherent misanthropic screed which is an extension of Todd's contempt for New Vegas, Obsidian and Interplay:

the resource wars weren't going to end any time soon, the USian people were getting tired and socialist sympathies were rising. it was established in New Vegas that the US false-flagged themselves in order to justify a nuclear exchange against China in order to cull the population and reënact Manifest Destiny. part of the Enclave's whole deal is trying to genocide the wastelanders to prepare North America for recolonisation.

it’s been my headcanon as far back as Interplay’s Fallout that an Americanist cabal believed the USian people were the US’s true enemy, and that by false-flagging themselves they could force a chosen few into the vaults where they could experiment eugenically with creating the ideal society to inherit the post-apocalyptic world free of foreign adversaries.

VaultTec's product is the end of the world, so they sold the end of the world.

Uhhh... The show basically confirms your "head canon" in season 2.

Also, I'm just gonna say that I absolutely hate how people will still claim that Todd hates New Vegas/Obsidian; he's gone on record multiple times saying that's not the case, the entirety of season 2 of the show was literally "New Vegas 2." The only reason your playthrough/ending of NV isn't canon is because in lore it's been about 15+ years since, and we all know nothing is ever permanent in Fallout.

I'm getting real tired of people spreading straight-up false information because it makes them feel better about a game they played when they were 10-13.

Edit: just gonna leave this article here for folks to read.

… a game they played when they were 10-13.

Hey there, I’ll have you know I played it like 5 times when I was 10-13 and then consistently every few years until my 20s and then again a few years ago at 25 thank you very much.

Lol so did I, and I love New Vegas, I'm just tired of the ridiculous fanboys always bandwagoning with their fingers stuck in their ears refusing to believe reality.

They're the NeoCons of video games.

Woah wait that's the whole reason?

Okay I take back what I said, I thought they killed billions with nukes all so that they could conduct some stupid silly small scale experiments with a few 100 people per vault on whatever last remaining precious humans were left in the vaults.

Instead of say, kidnapping people, telling them they are the last survivors or some other bullshit and then experimenting on them.

Instead, killing billions to save precious few millions so that they could use the remaining resources, and conducting experiments to make humanity stronger and smarter was an ideal opportunity, but they completely underestimated the amount of time the radiation will remain on the surface which caused almost all the vault tech scientists and suits to die from old age or radiation themselves.

    Correct?

  • [–] 2 points 3 months ago (1 child)

    Correct?

    more or less

they underestimated how much life would survive on the surface; they couldn't have predicted the Forced Evolutionary Virus; the Enclave (US rump state) is too fractured and horrifically incompetent to reënact Manifest Destiny; and most of the vault experiments failed catastrophically (if they weren't cut short by mechanical failures, deliberately or not).

Absolutely. Pair that with the fact that they were/are working with the Enclave (another thing with Fallout, Vault-Tec and the Enclave, two of the biggest shadiest agencies in pre-war America, are actually still active 200 years later), it's almost guaranteed.

Spoilers for the Fallout TV seriesI remember the TV series having a few scenes with the cowboy's wife, mr house, etc. discussing that they should do the first strike. I don't remember whether they were planning to hit China or themselves. Could also be that someone beat them to it.

It's because people get on their phones and don't actually watch it.

I understand if its a comfort show you have seen before that you put on for background noise but no dude they will do it with a brand new show some that they even want to actually watch and they just can't bring themselves to actually set the phone down and do it.

Then they have the nerve to ask you what's going on.

I'm finally on Season 6 of Game of Thrones; still can't remember dragon lady's name, the old man knight has a crush on her, young sellsword has a crush on her, most of the Stark kids, most of the Night's Watch.

I remember the characters, just not their names. I recognize the characters by their looks while they're on-screen & by their voices if they're not. But if they're only mentioned, I can have trouble unless there is additional context or if they've appeared recently.

It's also not like I can't remember any names. I also have an easier time remembering a name if it's a book instead of a tv series/movie, the name is interesting/otherwise memorable or if I've had enough exposure to it.

The girlfriend thinks it's a good show, so I watch it with her. Arya, the Hound and the Imp are the only interesting characters, Sam is endearing. It's entertaining watching Sansa gain some agency even though almost EVERYTHING is her fault, for lying for Joffrey because she wanted to be a queen.

Khaleesi (dumb I know), Ser Jorah Mormont (honestly one of the best characters in the show imo), I don't remember the merc, Rickon Bran and the youngest doesn't really matter from what I remember. And the Night's Watch doesn't matter except for Sam and Jon.

Damn, I only watched up to season 6 myself and it's been a few years since I last watched any of it.

Fallout has way, way fewer main characters than GoT did even at the very beginning. We follow three main characters in the wasteland: Lucy, Maximus, The Ghoul. Then there's her brother Norm and the rest of Vaults 31-33, Ghoul's wife Janie in the flashbacks, and Thaddeus who's Max's friend.

Convenientional war started before. Some time during the war Americans started mass producing power armors and that gave a massive advantage. With that advantage, they started invading China.

That was end of war records in Fallout 2. The implications are obvious I believe.

Thank you for the explanation. As for the games and show - I have played Fallout 4 but the mandatory garish graphics made me pukish and I left the game at about 25% done. Never went back to it. Felt very stupid that they would choose to make the graphics bad as a theme of the game when I was playing on the Xbox One, specially when a lot of people report that the game makes them pukish.

As for the show… the no nose guy creeps me out. That’s why I didn’t bother with the show.

That's what I'm thinking. OP might be some 180 mhz, 120 fps, whatever overclocking to get the most out of the game type of person. Which is fine, but when it holds you back from enjoying a large percent of all video games ever released, it's a little ridiculous.

ETA: in fact I just did a couple-hundred-hour playthrough a couple months ago and it looked fine. A little muddy cause it's like 11 years old now, but it still looks good imo. The stylization really helps to make it not look as dated. Also I used a shitload of power armor mods cause I wanted to be a collector of exotic armors. My favorite is probably the NCR PA based on the one from the show.

Okay but Skyrim looks worse than Fallout 4, and Vice City looks like that. I guess I'm just even more surprised now that Fallout 4 supposedly made you nauseous if you could handle those other games.

When you say "first God of War" do you mean 2018 or the actual first one on PS2?

The PS2 one. And yes, I know Skyrim looks janky af. I still play to this day and I feel fine. I was looking at the clip of Fallout 4 the other day and it made me nauseous! Makes me irritated that I paid good money for it on the Xbox One way back when.

First time I was actually pukish. Like, a switch flipped while playing the game one day and I just couldn’t sit with the game any more.

After doing some research on the art style and choices of the makers, it was irritation and a general gross feeling along with the pukishness.

So... What choices did the artists make to give you that feeling? Because again, the only thing I can find when I search for people getting sick while playing FO4 is just motion sickness, and then all the comments mention other first-person games they have similar issues with and that going third-person helps alleviate that.

I guess I'm still confused why anyone would get queasy playing a first-person game and it isn't motion sickness. Like you don't hear people complaining about getting queasy when they play any of the Doom games for example.

I was playing third person and yeah I guess you could call it motion sickness. I didn’t bother diagnosing it beyond trying a few more times and coming out with an absolutely crushing sickness feeling. I even tried going first person and it didn’t help.

And yeah, the graphics being weird and blocky and old school being the cause? It felt weird.

Have played Tomb 2, Shadow Warrior, Carmagegeddon. Never felt this feeling. Never felt it with any other game either. Well, except with the Oculus Rift 2. That definitely made me pukish.

You're holding yourself back from some great storytelling and worldbuilding all because you don't like the look of the graphics. I've literally never heard anyone say they feel nauseous from playing any Fallout game.

Also, you'd find the ghouls from any of the games before FO4/the show extremely discomforting if you didn't like how The Ghoul looks in the show.

In lore, ghouls are insanely irradiated and mutated humans to the point they basically literally turn into leprous zombies. They're functionally immortal, radiation heals them kinda like Wolverine (that one may be a bit of a retcon), and a lot of them lose their minds from the whole ordeal and go "feral." In Fallout 3 in particular, there's a location that's populated entirely by ghouls and you can ask them what it's like. At least one of them goes into detail about what it felt like when their face-skin peeled off, along with their nose.

Again, you're really holding yourself back from enjoying a fantastic universe, but you do you.

Fair about the tv show. But the game made me nauseous and a few google searches did show me that others felt it too. I wanted to do finish the game. But I physically couldn’t.

I keep coming back to this thread.

I was gonna say they're not actual zombies because they don't eat each other... But in every Fallout game (that I've played) there's literally a "Cannibalism" perk that lets you eat corpses for health. And The Ghoul most definitely has that perk in the show.

    So... Yeah.
