On Monday, the US Supreme Court decided in Trump v. Slaughter that the US Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) may not be independent anymore. Since 2000, the EU has relied on the “independent” FTC as the enforcer of EU-US deals on personal data. According to EU treaty law, such oversight must be independent. In the current EU-US deal, the European Commission relies on the independent FTC 259 (!) times.

Enjoying my EU hosted services, and looking forward to my next-gen cloud office software from the EU, and I'm already bypassing US retail brands for most of my electronics.

There was a time that saying "buy American" wasn't a curse or a threat.

My eu hosted services pass through us servers. Every single one is like this. Probably because your countries are spying on Americans too, and you’re all in cahoots together.

The day that the regular people of Europe and America, realize our leaders are all mutually fucking us together and hopping over to an island to fuck kids while laughing at us will be a fucking great day.

Watching The Man in the High castle hits very different now.
People over here are seeing what is going on in the USA but
they might still vote for Reform and then we are done. The rich will make sure that they control everything including
    every citizen.
Palantir, Musk, Bezos,Thiel and all the other monsters will plunder
what is left of the worlds resources and retreat to their many bunkers
or Mars. They think AI will fix the earth and according to them millions will die in the process of them remaking the world into a Technocratic feudal system. And for that they want all the data till they know more
about you than you do yourself.

At least that's what they have in their project 2025 and beyond as a plan.
They want only the "right" people to survive. It makes horrifying reading, they think of empathy and kindness as big
massive weakness, they want the sick, disabled ,lgbtq and others to die as thy are seen as a burden on their system. Sorry for the rant but I am old and these people scare me.

This is a good explanation of project 2025. It is a roadmap to the extreme right.
Women will lose their right to vote, getting contraceptives will be hard to come
by as they want women, white women to have as many babies as possible.
They want to institutionalize all homeless, disabled and mentally ill.Withing their circles the talk of mercy killings of these people. There is so much more craziness they want to enact and people need to organize and fight back. https://nwlc.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Project-2025-Full-Report.pdf

Doug Rushkoff's Survival of the Richest paints a really fascinating picture of the tech billionaire mindset. Rushkoff has been writing about tech for like 50 years so he's able to explain the evolution from creative tech anarchist to fascist sociopath. "They seem to think they can design a car fast enough to outrun its own exhaust."

Shits just getting started. This is just going to be one of many dominoes from this ruling to the ultimate demise of the USA, even if they do get rid of Trump.

This + Citizens United + President can't be charged for official acts = game over.

The presidency is no longer trust worthy, and now every US agency is no longer trust worthy.

    FDA: The drug isn't safe

    Trump: Approve it

    FDA: The drug isn't safe

    Trump: You're fired

FDA: The drug is the BEST DRUG WE'VE EVER SEEN!

    Every single agency.

Oh? Tell me about your country then.

There have always been issues. There was a lot of precursor to this. But there has never been anything this bad.

America was a beacon for the world, despite our violations and blemishes. Relative to the rest of history, we were leading the world ina better direction,.

Nixon was out after Watergate. You don't have to bribe our doctors or our cops during traffic stops. While we're having issues with LGBTQ, we were a leader in treating people with respect for a few decades. That's our norm.

    This is Idiocracy.

Privatized prisons. Invading countries for their oil. Overthrowing democratically elected governments and fucking up regions all over the world.

    Yeah sure

not haveing universal healthcare while bad is nothing like the crazyness of trump. As for the rest. Pia Vesta. Operation Condor. Private prisons showed up during reagan and is part of the downward spiral that got us to current and same with invading oil rich countries. Proxy shenanigans are also very prevelant outside of the us. So what im saying is the things you list in some cases are just common in the world not just the us and in other case were fought against and is part of what lead to trump. This is different mainly because the constitution is just being flaughted outright rather than being chipped at and scotus is not defending the constitution and half of congress is derelict in their duty to impeach him for flagrantly breaking the laws of the nation.

Anyway the point is what happening under trump is different. is worse. and is not business as usual as folks like you want to make it out. I honestly just assume its right wing shillery to normalize what they do but maybe you legit think this way.

The CIA planted crack in black neighborhoods, the fbi killed all the civil rights leaders, our government injected black men with syphillis to see what happens, the end of Jim Crow just morphed into mass incarceration for black Americans, we committed a genocide on Native Americans, we have pedophiles running our government, we’ve destabilized hundreds of governments to plunder assets ……I could go on and on we’ve always been a fascist nation. Woah guys, we got someone who fell hard for the propaganda.

The US spread fascism around the world in the form of the most destructive industry man ever invented the military industrial complex. The US has only been without conflict for a very short time in all its history.

We have committed and assisted in multiple genocides and our destruction to the environment through our proliferation of polluting technology has poisoned every single human on the planet. By my estimates we have lost close to a billion people from pollution in the last 50 years.

While I will admit the current administration of outright thieves is shocking, this type of back room dealing had always been a part of our extremely corrupt nation.

Most of what you praise is literally propaganda and very little can be attributed to reality. Sure the US has had more decorum in the past, but that ain't saying much.

Yeah. For a brief moment in the 19th century maybe.

Like seriously... We don't have as many issues with racism against black peeps in Germany (as the US has), but that's because very few live here at all.

"Our" racism targets eastern Europeans and (in my region) Turkish ppl, but I guess that's not racist because they're close enough in skin tone? (/s obviously)

That is a crazy way to diminish the reality that this nation only exists because of a holocaust and only became an economic powerhouse because of slavery.

America has never been worth a god damn thing. Some Americans are fine people, but the system, the nation? Designed to be diseased.

Pretty sure it'll make no difference. The agreements were already constantly being broken, and the EU only occassionally bothered doing anything about it. With the current European Comission being made up entirely of American assets, I suspect we'll see no action on this whatsoever.

Not sure whether this is an oversight or an intentional breach of the treaty. Hard to tell when one side acts in bad faith.

  • source
  • [–] 3 points 4 months ago

I'm not sure. Technically, yes, but there have been a number of EU treaties like that before that got all chopped by the courts, and the EU just went and found other lame excuses to try the same shit again.

So, theoretically, the EU has to rip that treaty to shreds, and have no real chance to get another attempt because all legal pathways have now been burned.

Please stop calling seflhosting "digital sovereignty". It's just a marketing buzzword, but basically there is nothing there except "I will host it myself".

  • source
  • hideshow 3 child comments
  • [–] 3 points 4 months ago (1 child)

I thought the idea of digital sovereignty means you host services in the same legal domain or country, not that you literally "self host" things. For example, nobody is calling that the EU organization should self-host anything, only that they would use European cloud services.

Or does "host it myself" actually mean that someone else would host it for you? I don't believe that's the common way to understand it.

  • source

US-based software does have hosting physically in EU, which makes it in the same legal domain, but US has the CLOUD Act, where US can force their companies, even if abroad, to pull data to US. So, being simply in the same legal domain or country does not make it sovereign. You actually need your own hardware and the full software stack where there is no foregin ownership to actually be sovereign.

And if you just scale up from individual persons to nations/blocks, whats the difference between "I will not use Google Drive, I will selfhost Nextcloud" and "EU will not use Google Drive, it will selfhost Nextcloud".

Me in this case is just not a person, but a country/political entity. EU is selfhosting instead of using US-provided hosting.

I have said repeatedly that that agreement was worthless and probably illegal anyway, because it's based on US agencies respecting personal data, and USA has demonstrated multiple times that their agencies have very little respect for personal data.

Therefore in principle it is illegal for any public institution in EU to store any personal data on any American owned server or cloud service.

This agreement between EU and USA was merely a play to the gallery, to avoid a major political trade crisis between EU and USA.
USA can still legally break all the rules by just saying the word terrorism. But they have many other ways they circumvent the regulation, for instance simply buying the information they need from scumbag companies that specialize in selling personal information, without needing a permission from a judge.

  • source
  • [–] 9 points 4 months ago

Actually surprised it has taken this long to realise the usa agencies cannot be relied on any more for indet.
