[2026] Roadmap (lemmy.world)

Planned changes

  • Offline mode (view posts, comment, vote all offline with an offline engine that tracks everything and performs the actions once network is established).
  • Setup wizard.
  • Extremely out of date version check? (Eg. if the app version you are using is over x versions out of date)
  • Export tables as part of export settings. Currently there is a limitation for the import/export settings feature. It only supports settings which are represented as key-value pairs. However some settings are represented as lists and these are stored in tables in a db. This change will require the app to know how to import/export a table as well as possible showing this option to the user.
  • Revisit the "more options" menus. Some of them are getting too long.

Specific user requests

Stretch features (nice to have but I need to do more research)

  • Possible integration with mastodon/? (needs research)
  • Support Mbin?
  • Sync between devices?
  • Turn chat in Summit into a "first class" feature.

Completed features

Is it possible to add that functionality? I tested Interstellar just now because I happen to have it installed and it does open those community links in the app.

Potentially the easiest feature request you've ever gotten.

Could you add <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_LOCAL_NETWORK" /> to the manifest? It doesn't need to request the permission anywhere, I just want the option to allow it.

I'm hosting my own Lemmy instance at home and I've got a PiHole set up to redirect any requests to my domain straight back to my local network. This works great for most apps, but Summit doesn't work on my WiFi because it doesn't have local network permission.

Love the app, its the best Lemmy client!

Hi I'm getting a 403 error trying to login. From the HTML output it looks like a Cloudflare anti-bot feature. Is there a way to fix this?

7

It seems I only noticed this just now since I have blurred NSFW thumbnail on but disabling NSFW mode is not respected. I tried it with a lemmy account and piefed account.

NSFW posts still showing in feeds. Unless I somehow misunderstanding how it works.

Version 1.88.0.

hi everyone

first of all thank you very much for making this app. Lemmy is philosophically way better than Reddit, which i can no longer access, and this app makes it possible for me to browse communities. not only that, but the app is totally functional, well-designed and has lots of thoughtful features. Summit is a great app that I'm happy to recommend. however, i have an issue.

i, like many people, struggle to limit my social media use. i find it easy to scroll endlessly and lose time - that i didn't want to spend looking at a screen with my back hunched over. how I'd like to use summit is: i moderate a couple of small communities; i check my notifications and reply to comments and messages; i browse my feed, which is comprised of posts from communities I've subscribed to, in chronological order. I'd also like to be able to search for new communities, and block users.

all of that is possible and easy within Summit. the developers have done a smashing job.

my only issue is that the default feed is all 'communities, sorted by activity'. i don't wish for this to be taken away, as it's great for some users. it only takes two taps for me to get the feed how i like it: subscribed, new. however when i close the app, Summit resets to default, which is an endless stream of content i haven't asked for, but which is nonetheless enticing. and so i scroll and get annoyed at myself.

in terms of solutions, i have two ideas.

  1. a setting to choose the default feed content.

  2. Summit to remember how your feed was configured last time you used the app.

for me, the first one is preferrable, and i imagine easier to implement, but I'm happy to hear other ideas.

let me reiterate that the app as it is is wonderful, and even without this change i will continue to use, enjoy, and participate in Summit for Lemmy.

thank you

PieFed supports post scheduling, and it looks like recent API updates may have made that feature compatible for apps. Would be an amazing feature add for Summit if possible :)

When trying to post a comment on https://piefed.social/c/ich_iel_but_american@piefed.world/p/2540163/ich-iel-but-american I get the error message

LemmyAction failed. Cause: com.idunnololz.summit.lemmy.actions.LemmyActionFailureReason.UnknownError. Details: UnknownError(errorCode=400, errorMessage=The language of the content you submitted is not allowed)

I guess the community only allows English American but I can't select a language when making a comment.

I see this in both posts and comments. Unless a new line is inserted between each image link, then the formatting of each image gets worse and worse. I've had this issue for ages, but never had a bad enough post before to get this bothered by it.

Link to the post: https://lemmy.world/post/53478299

The post is formatted something like this:

But would need to be formatted like this to view properly:

How can I DM a user in summit app I don't see any option?

I'm on android ColorOS 15 using summit android app version 1.87.0-fdroid

I would love to see a feature in Summit that shows how many times a post has been viewed, similar to Reddit.

Currently, upvotes and comments give us some idea of how a post is performing, but they don't tell us how many people have actually viewed it. A post might receive hundreds of views but only a few upvotes or comments, and there's currently no easy way to measure that reach.

  • Post view counts: Display the total number of views on each post.

  • View statistics: Allow users to see how many people have viewed their own posts.

  • Real-time or periodic updates: Keep view counts updated as more people see a post.

  • Privacy-friendly implementation: Count views without tracking individual users or exposing their identities.

I think this would be a great addition to Summit. It would help users understand how far their posts are reaching, whether they're sharing discussions, news, questions, or other content.

I understand that Lemmy is a federated platform, so implementing this feature might require additional work to track views across different instances. It would be worth exploring how to handle that while respecting user privacy.

What do you think? Would you like to see Reddit-style post view counts in Summit app?

14

I would like to request a private profile option on Lemmy.

Currently, users who value their privacy have limited control over how others view their profiles and activity. It would be great to have an option that allows users to make their profiles private, giving them more control over their personal information and online presence.

Features i like to suggest:

  • Private profiles: Allow users to restrict public access to their profile activity.

  • Activity visibility controls: Let users choose whether their posts, comments, and communities they participate in are publicly visible through their profile.

  • Follower or access approval: If feasible, allow users to approve who can view their profile activity.

  • Default privacy settings: Give users the option to choose their preferred profile visibility when creating an account.

I understand that Lemmy is a federated, open-source platform, and implementing private profiles could present technical challenges because posts and comments may already be distributed across different instances. However, having additional privacy controls would be a valuable improvement for users who want more control over their digital footprint.

Privacy should be an important part of the fediverse experience. I hope the developers and community will consider this feature for a future release.

I came across this comment in a post. Summit only loads it as an image with the play icon on it. Tapping on the image (probably the video thumbnail preview) opens the image in a gallery view but still doesn't play the video itself.

  • Fix a bug on PieFed where tapping on any conversation will load the list of all private messages.

Basically, if I open a chat with one account, my messages from/to other accounts (well, just one because I don't have more convos) are also displayed in the chat. Seems like a kinda significant bug.

Morning Team,

Please see the thread found at this link, between myself and the OP:

https://sh.itjust.works/post/68082252

I’d like to request that the LinkResolver.ky file be updated so that URIs have their RFC-3986 well-defined Reserved Characters “percent-encoded” before being transferred to a buffer.

If you need an assist on dev for this, lmk :) I’m about since Gingerbread on developing for android, let alone kt but I have the spice😭

Apologies for the wait, but this turned out to be a massive update.

This update adds post and comment templates. Templates are meant to be a way to reduce post/comment friction when certain posts/comments all follow some pattern. Now you can save those patterns and re-use them easily. They are sort of like drafts but meant to be more persistent.

The main reason why this update ended up being a huge amount of work is the amount of new screens this feature added. This resulted in a lot of mauling over different UI designs before finally deciding on a good design. Probably 1.5 weeks were spent on just thinking about UI design.

The update also required a large amount of new code so there is that as well.

There is a 2nd big feature I'd like to introduce as well, this one might be a more controversial so I made sure to make this feature opt-in and also basically hidden unless you want to use it. It's the addition of the AI image detector. This feature lets users check for AI signals in an image to determine if an image is likely AI generated. The approach taken has a low false-positive rate in exchange for a higher false negative rate (ie. images determined to be AI generated are extremely likely to be AI generated while images determined not to be AI generated might not always be correct).

This feature uses Open AI's content provenance API (it's what powers https://openai.com/research/verify/). Unfortunately this API has a low rate limit meaning to use it you will need to provide your own API key. You can get one for free and instructions are provided in the app.

The AI image detector is hidden by default, in order to enable the feature, you will need to navigate to Settings > Misc > Enable OpenAI tools and paste your Open AI API key into the app. Once you've done this, long pressing/tapping the more button on an image will expose a new option: "Check AI usage".

If anyone has any feedback about these new features please let me know in the comments.

Full changelog

  • Change the You > Drafts screen into the Drafts & Templates screen. This will be the primary way to add/edit/manage post/comment templates.
  • Expose templates in the drafts screen when composing a post/comment.
  • Add an action on posts/comments to create a post/comment template by using the target post/comment as the base.
  • Add a setting for enabling Open AI tools (Settings > Misc > Enable OpenAI tools). An Open AI API key will be required for this feature. When enabled, you can check if an image has AI signals from within the app.
  • Fix an issue where swiping on the "cross-post" section will not register as a swipe on the post screen even if the "cross-post" section is not wide enough to be scrollable.
  • Fix a rare bug where sometimes changes to a comment are lost.

Other apps like Jerboa have a lil button for commenting with an image or gif. I cant see one for Summit, am I blind?

21

This release will be centered around post/comment templates. I was going to make a WIP after the feature was done but it's taking forever so making the post now.

My original plan was to crank this out in a week and do a release, simple and easy. However, this feature turned out to be a lot more work than anticipated.

I was first hung up on the UI design of this feature. Then after getting that sorted out, the amount of code/number of moving parts needed to get this working was more than expected. Can't really give an estimate of when this feature will be done so all I can say is "soon".

Change so far

  • Got the post template editor working.
  • Show templates in the draft list screen when composing a post/comment.
  • Add a setting for enabling Open AI tools.

Summit doesn't show this tag correctly at the moment. Any chance this can be added to the roadmap? I didn't see this already on there, apologies if it already is.

Thank you (lemmy.world)

I just had to say thank you to the developers for such an awesome Lemmy client.

I am still clutching on to the remnants of Sync for Reddit, and bits are slowly breaking over time. But having Summit and slowly becoming more active with Lemmy has been a godsend.

I guess there are no plans for a Reddit port of Summit? 🥲

Would it be possible to change how Summit names its backups? Right now they're not "order by name" friendly.

To make them so, they should:

  • be prefixed with summit (so it doesn't bundle with backups from other apps that also don't prefix their names)
  • use ISO date format (so the month is always before the day)

Especially the last one would be nice. I just did some cleanup and thought my last backup wasn't there as it was not the last one (by name) in the file list.

I've started posting to more communities, and now my drafts folder gets a bit mixed up since I don't know which drafts are for which community. I was thinking about how the posts could be marked so I know what community they're for without making anything more cluttered or complex.

The best solution I came up with was on the Drafts screen, if a long press could pop up a color select screen like for user tagging where I could choose a color to highlight the title along these lines:

If there's a smoother way to incorporate it within the overall UI of the app, that's good too. You've been doing so much with features I've kinda fallen off keeping up with all the development for a bit now. You get so much done it's crazy! Thanks for everything!
