I have a fedora workstation pac connected to the living room tv, running some server duties in the house and playing games over streaming and on the tv it is connected to.

I want to forbid reboot/shutdown from the UI. I want only sudo in the terminal to be able to do that.

I'm no certain of the best way to do that. I cant go just hiding the options on a per UI basis as I'll be playing whack-a-mole until I'm dead. Instead, Id like things like plasma and steam to understand they aren't permitted to make that request, but if they try anyway, the OS just ignores them.

To start this story to need to understand my nephew is severely autistic. He needs help and patience. He is not going to do what he is told simply because he was told to do something. There are certain things kids can do that he can’t. Like walking to school. He can walk. But he can’t understand that an oncoming car doesn’t give a shit about his routine and will kill him, among other concerns.

My sister lives a few blocks from the school but can’t walk him to school every day. The school does have bussing but decided that nearby houses don’t get bussing, the kids have to walk. There is an exception for disabled children.

The school decided since he can walk he’s not disabled and he has to walk to school even if it means he’s alone. They are aware he’s in the special classes. The teachers there have also been screaming at the administration not to let this kid walk to school. The school doesn’t listen.

My sister pointed out disabled bussing is not exclusive to physical disabilities. But she’s just a stressed out and exhausted mom. What’s she going to do to them? They tell her to fuck off. Diplomacy failed.

Enter grandma Karen.

My sister told our mother about this. My mother is a weapon we are very reluctant to deploy. She’s dramatic. She’s a narcissist. She needs a villain for every encounter or else she gets bored. She’s a problem. Unleashing her on any situation is the equivalent of swatting a fly with a missile. You’ll kill the fly but the entire area becomes a smoldering crater.

She’s also made some incredibly powerful friends in politics over the years in her career. I’m reasonably certain she knows where literal bodies are buried. She’s now old. And bored. And still very well connected. So mom did some investigating and came up with something.

My mother and sister scheduled another meeting with the school. They came in, same guy ready to dismiss the annoying women who dare tell him he’s wrong. Mom stays quiet while the guy makes his case. At a certain point she decides she has enough to hang him and she unleashes elderly Karen hell on this man. The primordial personality disorder that defines that half of my family has been awakened and it’s HUNGRY!

She goes after how he could put a child in danger, how he pick a fight with her grandson, all the emotional stuff she knows won’t work. She’s drawing him out.

Then he activates her trap card. “Mam, we just don’t have the budget for bussing every child.”

Got him. “But you do have the budget for bussing disabled children. What happened to that money?”

“Your grandson isn’t disabled. He can walk.”

“That’s not what the money was for it’s not for “can’t walk” it’s for “disabled.””

“I understand you care about your grandson, we all do, but that not how the budget works on this.”

“Actually, it is. Your school got a grant specifically for paying for this exact situation. (Name drop) was involved with writing that grant and I think we should hear his opinion on how that grant money should be spent.”

Mom then calls in one of the people who actually was behind that fucking grant as well as a union rep for the bus drivers or something was did some digging and found the school had that money and was desperately trying NOT to spend it, which they are very much not allowed to do. The two men now enter the room. My sister says nothing. My mom says nothing. He ignored the women, so now they will let the men speak.

My nephew now gets to ride the bus.

Mom was at a thing my sister’s and flagged me down.

“That watch you gave me called the police.”

“….and hello to you too?”

“I fell down the stairs to the basement and the watch just called for help. Did you know it could do that?”

“Yea, why do you think I got you one?”

-pause…then jerks to annoyance- “I had to tell the ambulance I’m fine don’t come”

I want her gone but not like that. Not starving to death with a broken hip in her basement. She’s shocked by this revelation and admittedly I kind of am too.

It throws an error “problem connecting to server” after I tried reinstalling it. I can log in fine in safari though, and I can post here so it’s not a ban.

I know there was a cloud flare error earlier, but that’s gone and I still can’t get voyager to connect. Is anyone else seeing this?

I'd like to try to get fedora to host a second headless Wayland session in the background for a remote user. I have a GPU but I want to share its render and compute, not the physical HDMI output, so I need a virtual Wayland session for the second seat.

Supposedly logind could handle the seat and udev permission issues clean enough, but headless use is still beyond me there.

I'd like a KDE Plasma environment running headless and then sunshine can just stream this session out using the war capture method. I just don't know how to start up a separate Wayland session under another linux user in the background with a plasma session drawing to an imaginary monitor.

There seem to be 2 ways of doing this.

• wlheadless-run - a young project made to solve this particular problem
• kwin --virtual can theoretically do this, but I'm not finding clear examples of it

I took my brother and went to see last act. Goose really did a marvelous thing with this show. She tapped into the best of the neurodivergent internet community and gave them something to come out of their basements for. Please understand I mean this in the BEST POSSIBLE WAY.

I heard people crying at “the scene” (glitch said no spoilers but if you’ve seen it you know exactly the one I’m talking about). I heard people singing along with the theme introducing the cast members. The applause at the end wasn’t ceremonial and exaggerated but genuine. It felt like the audience finally exhaled together.

There was a scene with Jax unloading some personal shit that was really heavy where my eyes went wide and I slowly turned to my brother and even in the dark he said he felt it.

“Dude, it’s mom.”

And yet it hit different in a crowd like this than it would with damn near any other fandom. I felt…heard. For something a purple asshole said for me. I’m 40 fucking years old and the abuse I’ve carried around for years suddenly felt lighter.

I'm still on my little adventure of pulling my crap off the cloud and realized my calendar is still blowing around out there. What do people use for their personal calendars nowadays?

I have a thin client I want to mess around with. My understanding is I can install a regular wayland based system on this and use waypipe to run the actual heavier apps on my linux server elsewhere and have it do the work here, but take inputs and show the results on the thin client. So it would be interacted with like a normal app but the actual work would happen on the server.

How well does this actually work? I know we have sunshine for things that need the GPU but like, if I pull up chrome and watch youtube, woudl waypipe keep up with that?

I have a firewalla purple. it's idiot mode networking and I love it, but I have never been too thrilled with it's cloud shit and really don't to rely on it as my only option right now.

A while back I tried spinning up a VM with opnsense and never got good performance off my home ryzen server. I tried multiple NICs and even bare metal installs and while bare metal was a little more performant, it was never able to reach gigabit on WAN. the firewalla falls just a hair short of gigabit WAN but its still way ahead of my more muscular server. I notice the CPU load spikes high. it seems nothing I do can bring down that CPU load for opnsense. openwrt performed a bit better but still never hit gigabit speeds and was still below the firewalla's performance. bare metal was again a bit better but still not matching the firewalla.

The firewalla is a heavily optimized amlogic based pi. it's not special. but it works right and my crap doesnt. I have other SBCs I can use if folding into the home server as a VM just isnt practical but the server is always on anyway and already has extra resources I can throw into this so I'd like to just throw it all in there, snapshot a working config and be done with it if I can.

I walked away from this a while back thinking I would have a fix if I took a break and came back to it later but I'm still stumped. How are other people doing this?

I need to mount ISO files on launch of some really old games. I see I can create a script and then have lutris launch the script to mount and launch another script to unmount when I run the game however it requires root privileges to mount. I’ve tried adding the specific ISO files to fstab And changing the mount location to something in the users’s home folder, but it’s just not working. What am I missing?

I'm looking at the jolla phone and absolutely love it, but its not looking like something I can easily get in the US. Iibrem is available but with a high price and terrible specs.

I'd really like something supporting continuum (usbc DP-alt mode) too if possible.

But the american options don't seem all that great. What's available in the US?
