Let's do another round of this. What's going on on your servers, any cool things? How'd the recent CVE flood tangent you and did it change how you see/do stuff?

Edit at the top:

If you see anything from a user at 1095.me, just report. Its pretty guaranteed to be a bot, usually with spam links embedded. They were cropping up a little bit back and seem to be going another round.

The Lemmy.world TOS requires that any bot account be set as such in their profile, and that any community they post to requires approval first.

Generically speaking, I won't be approving any. What I mean by that is any bot request is going to need a valid and real reason for its use here, which I would then bring to the community to make that choice like I did for the rules discussion threads. I wish there were a better way than a basic upvote or downvote system for feedback, but its what we've got so its what I'll use.

I have not posted about any new bots since I took over here a few months ago, so no new bots should be considered as having community approval.

If you see them, please just report and I'll get to it as soon as possible. The current one seems to just be getting new accounts all over the fediverse, and tacking their home instance onto the end. They are banned, but I'll have to ban again as things come up. I'll bring this up to the lemmy.world admins as well. This also goes for any other new bot that begins flooding the community.

Thanks!

My use case is a homelab kubernetes cluster, so I want multiple nodes for redundancy, but I don't want to use too much electricity or generate too much heat. But for the sake of other readers, let's keep it general:

What's a nice little computer for a homelab, with its own power supply, ethernet, and room for 2 internal disks?

Been using syncthing for a year now and works great for syncing between devices. But i miss file sharing with family members that nextcloud allowed me to do. Yet i left ut because it was too bloated and every update at the time broke my instalkation. Is there something a mature and specialised as syncthing but that allows sharing between accounts?

I assumed we could both run Duplicati, connect over Tailscale and bing bong boom, send files back and forth. But Dupicati only allows uploads and only to its cloud service, not to other Dupicati instances.

Requirements: Needs to be docker, preferably something with a Web GUI. My friend is not tech savvy and I am not physically close enough to help troubleshoot.

PS- I am not committed to Dupicati it just is the most recommended. I'm open to anything simple and encrypted!

Revolut says that in less than a year it's managed to slash its [code generation] costs by roughly 90 percent by making self-hosted models its default instead of relying primarily on commercial services like Claude.

I am looking for a self hosted bookmark manager. Does anyone have any experience to share?

Ideally I'd like:

  • Self hosted with FOSS license
  • Firefox integration (ideally on android, too)
  • ideally no AI features or at least opt-in
  • ideally human driven development (as little AI code as possible)

Linkwarden, Karakeep, Nextcloud/bookmarks seems to be the main ones.

Share any TCP network service (like a web server, game, etc.) with your contacts through Jami! It can also manage an embedded web server as needed to easily share simple websites or directories.

Looking to move some drives from my gaming rig to my server but it lacks hot swappable bays. I have seen a few nice cases but they dont check all the boxes. Anyone have a good recommendation based on...

  1. 12+ hot swappable drive bays
  2. Fit full size graphics cards
  3. ATX full size
  4. Rack mountable
  5. Includes rails is a plus but optional

New post: A static blog with the fediverse as its comment systemHow this site works: a Hugo build that publishes on git push, a toot that doubles as the comment thread, replies from Mastodon and Bluesky rendered as plain text, a redaction check that refuses to deploy my own mistakes, and three bugs that got past every check but one: two…blog.fullast.nu/posts/2026-10-#homelab #selfhosted #selfhosting #blog #hugo #mastodon #bluesky #fediverse@selfhosted

I am founding a FOSS club in my university and I want to be able to consult to the members in most decisions about the club. And I want to do so with upmost accuracy.

So I am looking for a self hosted, easy to use (at least for the voters), preferably anonymous (not a requirement) voting software

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/58898830

There has been some QoL improvements added recently. Notable ones are:

  1. Support for OIDC login
  2. Batched inserts
  3. Temporary link disabling
  4. Faster reply and redirection due to async handling of some less-important tasks

There have also been small changes to the backend and UI that improve the user experience overall.

If you're looking for a selfhosted URL shortener, please check it out.

I wanted to share with you all my experience on coding with AI, on a self-hosted oss.

This entire post has been fully written by me without any AI.

Edit: I violated rule 4, so I cut the long text here, please read it on the linked blog post!

Also, to be clear, the post itself has no ads and no monetization whatsoever. This is not self promotion for any scope than to share my experience on a controversial topic.

UPDATE 11/5: Thank you to everyone who has commented & advised me! I found thishttps://selfhostable.dev/blog/casaos-vs-umbrel-vs-yunohost-home-server-os-showdown-2026/ Which seems relatively sane, also thanks for those who pointed me to TechDadLife. I'm skipping Umbrel (just toooooo simple...) and going with Yunohost or reCasaOS for a more supported, up-to-date GUI front end. Cheers!

TL:DR - have you used UmbralOS on a non-umbral device? Is it pretty straightforward? Reliable? Easy to use for a simple media server?

THE TL: SO my mini-pc's M.2 SSD shit the bed, and I'm essentially forced to rebuild my media server from backups, etc. I keep my actual media on USB external drives, and backup my configs/YAML regularly, so not the end of the world. I've put in a new SSD and ready to restart... but as they say, each problem is also an opportunity, and I'm considering switching the structure/interface of the server.

Instead of pure, headless CLI ubuntu server, I previously used CasaOS, as, at the time, I was new to hosting, and other users in my household are absolutely allergic to CLI and pretty much always will be. CasaOS is nice because the Debian CLI is there for me if I need it, but running on top is an "Okay" GUI that has familiar things like "apps" and folders with folder structures. Even though I'm much more experienced than I was, say, a year ago, I still think I'd rather not do "pure" CLI docker compose. I only need a couple, simple services, that are easier for other household members to interact with independently if it has a GUI. If you think there's a compelling reason I should change my mind on that, tell me why.

CasaOS over the past year ish has started to feel very much like abandonware, however, as they've moved to ZimaOS (which is waaay more than we need, I'm not running a RAID or trying to set up 20+self-hosted services...Does anyone have experience with UmbralOS (especially on NON-Umbral hardware, and with USB external HDD storage) It's for a simple media & file hosting experience via Jellyfin, primarily.

We're running an ARR stack, Jellyseer & Jellyfin with Nextcloud for photos & documents. My mini pc is a GEEKOM Air12 LITE which is not particularly beefy on specs... though I'm going to add another 8 gb of RAM to it when I upgrade. Any thoughts/advice are so greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am looking to basically just transition to a small time, forever on, server to support my growing Plex footprint. I don't need anything top of the line, and I've already crimped my lines to the room.

What's the most cost effective way to go about this? Figured i would come to the pros.

Thanks!

I'm tempted to move to email with my own domain, but don't really care about the server side of things, I guess I'm following the line that self hosted email is not easy to do, and not sure how reliable I can make my servers.

The other option is to have some other system do the email hosting, and if it is through my domain then there should be no issues with moving around if needed. Hosting all the email archive isn't really needed either, I'd be fine self hosting or storing the archive.

Is there a set up where some remote service handles email exchange, and you just sync with it eg through POP style interfaces? Id actually prefer if my own server was doing the sync rather than a desktop running Thunderbird etc, that way it is kind of self hosted but also robust to down time. What's the best practice along these lines?

I transitioned to Linux a few years ago, which has piqued my partner’s curiosity. She's been genuinely interested and asks questions about it, but she is so deeply integrated I don't know where to start. She uses iCloud, an Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, a Mac desktop, plus whatever default proprietary software. She has a semi-technical background.

I want to help and be encouraging without overselling the ease of transition. There's always some friction with transitioning technology, and of course Apple makes that intentionally difficult. I came from a Windows ecosystem, so I'm lacking any direct insight for potential challenges.

Any advice or personal experiences on moving from the Apple ecosystem to Linux would be hugely appreciated!

(I can host services on my local server, so transitioning to something like Immich vs iCloud for photos is one option we've discussed).

Looking to build/buy a headless Linux PC to #selfhost a few things including #pihole, #Nextcloud, media server, etc. Nothing that needs amazing compute power. Ideally small form factor like a NUC. This is replacing a Raspberry Pi 4 which I feel is underpowered and cumbersome with the 2.5" external drives separate or externally powered 3.5 inch drives. Ideally I'd be able to use the cheaper 3.5" drives on this setup without needing external power that requires.

I looked on local resale options and can't seem to find anything available.

Thanks

As part of my Homelab, I have TrueNAS Community Edition running in a big case with a bunch of Frankenstein parts including two GTX 1080s. TrueNAS recently phased out support for these older cards and I've been having to go through and manually install working drivers, which seem to have gotten overwritten on the last update anyway. Since I'm not actually using anything for video output (and have onboard HDMI if needed). One of the cards I am passing through to a VM (where it has no problem being recognized and used). The other card was used by Truenas for my apps.

Do you have any recommendations for hardware to accelerate tasks like Immich, Jellfin transcoding, media fingerprinting for metadata, OCR on bulk-uploaded pdfs etc.?

I was never really a hardware guy, especially when it comes to self-hosting and servers.

  • I don't want to play games on my server.
  • I don't want to empty my accounts to put a 5090 TI in a server.
  • The above tasks are too slow on CPU alone, so I have to put something in it.
  • I could keep running the 1080s with manually installed drivers, but it's a PITA and I wouldn't mind not doing that.

Are there reasonable options that can take up the workload, but come in at a decent price point? I know with a server, I don't necessarily have to run the same stuff as gamers. Are there options outside of the typical NVIDIA and AMD gaming linups that would work for my purpose, perhaps acquirable via FB marketplace, Craigslist, etc.? Does your server have video acceleration and, if so, what hardware are you using?

I appreciate any guidance the community can give me.

Every Go application since 1.24 will activate MPTCP on their sockets by default.

And I've read that this includes Syncthing, which is why I'm posting this here
