I am looking for a self hosted bookmark manager. Does anyone have any experience to share?

Ideally I'd like:

  • Self hosted with FOSS license
  • Firefox integration (ideally on android, too)
  • ideally no AI features or at least opt-in
  • ideally human driven development (as little AI code as possible)

Linkwarden, Karakeep, Nextcloud/bookmarks seems to be the main ones.

I tried Floccus, Linkwarden and Karakeep but ultimately settled on Linkding as it gave me the least trouble and is the only one with a browser extension that allowed me to add tags while saving a bookmark rather than having to go back in and add them after the fact.

How active is development of Linkding? Seems there hasn't been a commit in 2 months or so.

While I wouldn't expose such a service to the internet it's still a bit worrying with the amount of CVEs coming out. Like these that haven't been addressed https://github.com/sissbruecker/linkding/issues/1527, https://github.com/sissbruecker/linkding/issues/1518

  • Thing is with those generic vulnerability scan issues, it might be fine if they don’t use brotli or dns or whatever is vulnerable or don’t expose it in a way it can be accessed. I’ve seen maintainers push back against unneeded hurry up busy work, but I also can’t be arsed to check if they’re relevant since idk the code base or how it’s used.

It does get maintenance when needed, but dev is slower since it’s basically done. It works and hasn’t ever given me trouble. I also have it exposed behind Authentik, so I guess the security issues matter much less too.

I’m able to use an iOS shortcut to save links and the desktop extension with SSO Authentik login in the way, so overall I’m pretty chuffed

I use linkwarden. Pretty easy to setup with docker and run behind a reverse proxy (you could probably do tailscale if that's your thing). I have it setup with a few RSS feeds to download blog updates and it seems to work well. I didn't configure it to use a local LLM so I have to manually organize my bookmarks. Usually I do that in bulk once every few weeks. I'm happy with it.

I use Nextcloud's bookmarks plugin and sync it to librewolf with floccus. On graphene I install the Nextcloud bookmarks app since floccus isn't available for ironfox

Not recommended as it will be a constant maintenance and upgrade cycle to keep it working with Firefox but you can actually setup your own Firefox server stack (not just sync, but profiles and account everything):

I've heard a lot of good regarding linkwarden.

    I would recommend Floccus.

I tried Linkwarden and others, ultimately didn't want to consume half a gig of ram for this when all I need it simple bookmarks. I sync through WebDAV and use the addons in all my browsers and the app on Android. Works great.

Exactly my story. Putting stuff into and getting it back out of Linkwarden was way too cumbersome, even with the FF addon installed. I want to just Control + D/B to throw something inside / get something out of my bookmarks. Linmwarden's preservation of content is nice and all, but I found I rarely if ever needed that functionality.

I recently went on the same journey and decided on Floccus on WebDAV. All I wanted was a straightforward way to share my bookmarks across devices, not be locked into anything, and not have a ton of features I'd never use. Since I already had WebDAV set up, it was just a matter of installing clients.

I use Karakeep with Floccus and it works really nice.

Check shiori out. It's very minimal in terms of features, but it's a project that seems to not use LLMs at all. It has a Firefox extension and recently someone made a vibecoded android app.

Firefox natively syncs bookmarks if you're not aware, including to mobile.

Cool, how do we selfhost that?

Is it possible to hook this up to FF mobile as well?

You will need to setup a reverse proxy that handles ssl and letsencrypt in front of the syncstorage-rs docker and make sure you don't bind to http://localhost/ but https://example.com/.
Firefox clients refuse to connect to a sync storage that doesn't use a signed certificate unless it is on localhost.

To use it on firefox mobile you will need to activate the developer mode by going to Settings -> About Firefox and press the logo multiple times (I think five?). Exit the settings menu and enter it again. Now you will see Sync Debug at the top of the settings menu and in that menu you can setup custom servers.

I really like Hoarder but their new interface update is trash. It looks fine on the phone though.

I just migrated linkwarden to karakeep, because with linkwarden I couldn't make it archive certain bot protected websites.

I like to use readeck. But that is mostly a read later thing, i think.

Tried them all, settled on Linkding too. The UI is simple and clean.
