yeah see here's the thing: I don't know what samba is and I've never "written" a webpage in my life, simple or no. A lot of people tell me "just use CLI, it's better!" But "better" usually ends up meaning "you have more control over all these little options that you never use!" I just don't get it. I watched TechnoDadLife do a side-by-side of OMV and CasaOS, and he was done with CasaOS setup in less than 2 minutes... OMV took a ton of customization, settings, plugin & terminal downloads, configs... nightmare. He says "if youre just managing media, use CasaOS or similar." and I have yet to see a better argument for CLI/pure headless. It seems a bit elitist hacker gatekeepy to me. Everyone always says "whatever works for you, but that thing that works for you is worse." for no real discernible benefit that I can understand.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply. It's great to hear from you (n others) that the "GUI" style can be easily accomplished without relying on either of these. I will look into Open Media Vault and Portainer as you and others have suggested. Very cool abt AudiobookShelf-- I was manuallyy downloading my audiobooks to my phone. I should look into something like you have.

Cool! Warts and all, I did have a pretty positive experience with CasaOS, esp as a beginner to both linux and selfhosting at the same time, it really helped me understand things, and of course, now it's familiar... it would be very cool to have that familiarity, but actively managed... because there are also lots of bugs/half-assed features in casaOS. Thanks.

That's the thing... I can't find much on them, other than that it all started as a crypto platform, but evolved beyond that, it's surprsing how little I know about it.... Someone just suggested it as a more "active project" that works a lot like CasaOS... seems like they're trying to sell an "easy, pre-packaged" home server, which is a neat idea for non-tech savvy types who want to own & unsubscribe... butttttt what OS even is this? Is this a custom linux distro? Is it just a gui running on top? It's hard to figure out exactly what their "os" really is.

OK, what is "a startpage for them with links" is that a service or do you mean create a webpage? I mean, most of what my non CLI users want to do is move/edit files. Like when you get a russian lang only file, or .exe malware... they just need to delete/move things sometimes. I don't know how a startpage helps that.

UPDATE 11/5: Thank you to everyone who has commented & advised me! I found thishttps://selfhostable.dev/blog/casaos-vs-umbrel-vs-yunohost-home-server-os-showdown-2026/ Which seems relatively sane, also thanks for those who pointed me to TechDadLife. I'm skipping Umbrel (just toooooo simple...) and going with Yunohost or reCasaOS for a more supported, up-to-date GUI front end. Cheers!

TL:DR - have you used UmbralOS on a non-umbral device? Is it pretty straightforward? Reliable? Easy to use for a simple media server?

THE TL: SO my mini-pc's M.2 SSD shit the bed, and I'm essentially forced to rebuild my media server from backups, etc. I keep my actual media on USB external drives, and backup my configs/YAML regularly, so not the end of the world. I've put in a new SSD and ready to restart... but as they say, each problem is also an opportunity, and I'm considering switching the structure/interface of the server.

Instead of pure, headless CLI ubuntu server, I previously used CasaOS, as, at the time, I was new to hosting, and other users in my household are absolutely allergic to CLI and pretty much always will be. CasaOS is nice because the Debian CLI is there for me if I need it, but running on top is an "Okay" GUI that has familiar things like "apps" and folders with folder structures. Even though I'm much more experienced than I was, say, a year ago, I still think I'd rather not do "pure" CLI docker compose. I only need a couple, simple services, that are easier for other household members to interact with independently if it has a GUI. If you think there's a compelling reason I should change my mind on that, tell me why.

CasaOS over the past year ish has started to feel very much like abandonware, however, as they've moved to ZimaOS (which is waaay more than we need, I'm not running a RAID or trying to set up 20+self-hosted services...Does anyone have experience with UmbralOS (especially on NON-Umbral hardware, and with USB external HDD storage) It's for a simple media & file hosting experience via Jellyfin, primarily.

We're running an ARR stack, Jellyseer & Jellyfin with Nextcloud for photos & documents. My mini pc is a GEEKOM Air12 LITE which is not particularly beefy on specs... though I'm going to add another 8 gb of RAM to it when I upgrade. Any thoughts/advice are so greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It's even better when the English word is so riddled with vowel syllabics that Japanese phonemes require that it wraps all the way around and becomes unrecognizable...even when it's "English." My fav: Makkudonarudo - マックドナルド even tho most people just call it "Maku-do" for McDonalds.

Also, gotta watch out... just when you think "Pants" is just "Pantsu" you actually just said "underwear" in Japanese.

Personally, as is often noted, "Idiocracy" is probably tops for current events... but for the farther future, I'd go Blade Runner Universe, most likely.... just for the sheer scale of total biosphere degradation and megacorp control. How about you?

Hello Self Hosters! I am new-ish... got Jellyfin working great with tailscale remote access! I love it! I keep getting deeper into this stuff and geeking out... really excited to add my next service: Self-Hosted Nextcloud.

Would someone kindly walk me through setting up reverse proxy to my stuff with Caddy? I really just want HTTPS support, as my media files are one thing, but hosting all my personal info/docs on NextCloud is quite another thing to potentially expose....I want to make sure I harden properly, and HTTPS is clearly a part of that, even if I'm running a tailscale VPN. I have done my best following the docs/tutorial so far, but I've hit the wall with this "start" page.... Here's what I've got:

    • pointed my domain "A" DNS to my website as a sub-domain... so my address in caddyfile is "sub.mydomain.com"
    • I've installed caddy directly on my unbuntu server, but I admin my Jellyfin (and eventually Nextcloud) with Docker via CasaOS interface... is this a problem? Do I need to run Caddy in docker too?
    • I've followed the instructions on this start page and I still only get the startpage at "sub.mydomain.com"
    • my tailnet server IP address is what I'm using for the reverse proxy... that's correct, yes?
    • So many things/guides just say "reverse-proxy --to ..." but when I do that, I get an error saying port 80 is 'already in use' I have combed my configs & devices on my router...nothing is using port 80 that I can see. Ports 80 and 443 ARE forwarded/open, before you ask! -My next big step in this journey is piHole, so if this will interfere/interact with that in some important way, I appreciate the heads-up mightily!

Thank you in advance, I appreciate it!

EDIT! - CasaOS uses 80 as default gateway, turns out! So, switched that... now Caddy is starting properly... STILL can't get the 'welcome' page to go away.... still a problem with my caddyfile I suppose.

Hello. I have just recently started with self hosting my media with Jellyfin... and I am LOVING it! I had been carrying around media players for decades, with everyone looking at me like an insane crank for not giving up on my hundreds of gigs of media for SAS things like spotify... now they're jealous! We've come full circle!

Annnyway. Obviously, I want to access the server anywhere, and don't want to just raw-dog an open port to the internet- yikes!

There are SO MANY ways and guides and thoughts on this, I'm a bit overwhelmed and looking for your thoughts on the best way to start off... it doesn't have to be 'fort knox' and I am sure I'll adjust and pivot as I learn more... but here are the options I know of (did I miss any?):

    • Tailscale VPN connection

    • Reverse Proxy with Caddy or similar (this is recommended as easy in the jellyfin official guides and thus is my current leading contender!)

    • Docker/VM 'containerized' server with permissions/access control

What are your thoughts on the beginner-friendly-ness and ease of setup/management of these? This is exclusively for use by me and my family, so I don't need something that's easy for anyone to access with credentials... just our handful of devices.

Please don't laugh, but I'm currently hosting on a Raspberry Pi5 with a big-ass harddrive attached (using CasaOS on a headless Ubuntu Server). I know this is JANK as far as self-hosting goes, and plan to upgrade to something like NAS in the future, but I'm still researching and learning, and aside from shitty video transcoding, it's working fine for now... Thank you in advance for your advice, help and thoughts!

EDIT: Thanks all for the helpful comments & Suggestions. I'm all set up with Tailscale, setting up Caddy with it soon, and so far, as advertised! EZPZ and soooo good!
