I am a happy ZRAM user for several years now. Basically it makes my 4GB netbook totally usable running Gnome and a Browser with a lot of open tabs.
After reading Debunking zswap and zram myths last week, I thought to give ZSWAP a trial, since the machine had a 3 GB swap partition anyway.
I disabled ZRAM, and enabled ZSWAP and configured it to use the defaults with ZSTD.
I would have expected, that my machine would perform as good as with ZRAM, perhaps a little bit slower because of accessing SWAP instead of just using the RAM.
Surprisingly, my machine froze using ZSWAP after opening at most half the amount of tabs in my browser that I would open when using ZRAM. Was the first freeze on this machine I can remember, after I made the switch to ZRAM.
I increased the zswap.max_pool_percent from its default of 20 percent to 50 percent, which improved the situation a little bit, but still the machine froze again.
I saw the the physical swap was being utilized.
I reverted back to ZRAM, where I configure by default the size to be double the amount of RAM, something like 8 GB (!), again with ZSTD. I could open an insane amount of tabs again, I saw that nothing was swapped to the physical swap, everything was in the RAM disk. No trouble, no freezing.
My question is, why do I observe this? Should not ZSWAP with 50 percent of RAM and a physical SWAP partition outperform ZRAM, at least concerning the number of open tabs in the browser? (I could understand a performance loss because of swapping to the SSD.) Why does the out of memory systemd service not trigger properly with ZSWAP?
Using Debian 13 on an Intel Celeron, in case that should be relevant.
Update:
- I understand, that ZRAM is just a compressed RAM disk and that the 8GB I configure is the size of the compressed data on it, not the actual size it takes in memory
- I understand, that ZSWAP is a caching layer in front of regular swap, integrated into the memory manager subsystem of Linux
According to my understanding, this still does not explain, why ZRAM outperforms ZSWAP. The physical RAM consumption of ZRAM with a lot of open tabs is roughly 2GB. ZSWAP should have had roughly 1.9 GB of RAM for compressed pages ) + 2.9 GB of physical swap. If we assume a compression factor of 3 this sould be roughly 1 GB of additional swap compared to ZRAM, which still performs worse. Again, in both cases ZSTD was used.
Update 2: When I write 'freeze', I mean full out of memory crash when using ZSWAP. The machine 'freezes' fully, inclusive mouse cursor and nothing happens, even if I leave it alone a few minutes. Sorry, English is my 2nd language.
Hi all,
I would like to use a linux phone with Ubuntu Touch or PostmarketOS to make a sort of mobile modem which, when my laptop connects to the phone's hotspot, would have Pihole for DNS and a VPN. Is this possible, and which general steps would you recommend to go about it? I have installed PostmarketOS on a Poco F1 and connected to my VPN using openvpn in the terminal, but then when I open a browser on the same phone and check my ip address it shows the address of the wifi I'm connected to, not the VPN. So it seems I have no idea about the architecture of this endeavor.
I hope to have this working by Christmas when I go to visit my parents. The intended internet connection would be
home wifi ---> linux phone [some level of privacy]---> my laptop wifi
Thank you in advance!
Fedora has a package for big-screen but when I boot into it I get an error stating that:
•Type HomeOverlayWindow unavailable
•Type MainColumn unavailable
•Type ColumnActionsRow unavailable
•module "org.kde.plasma.networkmanagement" is unavailable
is there an additional package to install or do I need to scrap this lil experiment?
I'm an Arch user (CachyOS now) and I've gotten used to doing things a certain way. Anyway, I have another computer with a fresh Windows 11 install. After literally 5 hours of troubleshooting, I still could not get the fuckass wi-fi drivers installed. People who say Windows is easy clearly never had to install it. I eventually said fuck it and decided to install NixOS. I'm used to Arch based distros so I wanted to try something new. I'm very confused about how it works and what it's intended use case is. I spent an hour trying to figure out how to install micro permanently. I did RTFM but It didn't really help. I guess I'm hoping someone can share some words of encouragement and/or convince and/or bully me into sticking with this weird ass distro.
I am running EndeavourOS with XFCE4 and when I enter my password the underscore cursor appears in the top left corner for a moment then I get bounced back to the log in screen. This happened after an update. I don't think I made any other alterations to the system or installed new packages.
From my searching around I tried the following from the terminal:
ls -lah | grep -i Xauthority says that I have rw privileges.
I've tried updating my system using sudo pacman -Syu and yay -Syu.
df -h Says I have 18GB available in /dev/dm-0. I even deleted a couple files to make sure I had space available.
I ran rm ~/.Xauthority.
I made sure session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession was in my lightdm.conf.
I tried downgrading the xfce4-session package but that didn't work so I updated it again.
I checked to see if I have libxfce4ui-devel installed instead of libxfce4ui. I only have libxfce4ui installed.
I ran systemctl start xfce4-notifyd.service but it says "Failed to start xfce4-notifyd.service: Unit xfce4-notifyd.service not found". The user posting the question had the same result but that wasn't their solution. They had a fancy tablet plugged in or something.
One of the sign in options in my login screen is for Weston and I am able to login fine to that.
I'm pretty stumped here. I've started getting into loops while searching for an answer online. I feel like it's probably something on the XFCE side but I'm struggling to find out where to begin looking. Some users said to check .xsession-errors but apparently "Failed to fetch NET NUMBER OF DESKTOPS; assuming 0" is a normal message. I don't know about the four other messages but they all seem similar.
Any ideas? Even if it's rechecking something above. Maybe I missed something.
Update:
I downgraded my AMD GPU drivers through pacman and was able to get things working. Does anyone know why upgrading them might have caused my system to act this way? Would it be fine updating them in the future or do I need to make tweaks to my setup?
Update 2:
It seems like it may have been an issue with conflicting graphics drivers. I think at some point I may have installed something related to Nvidia but I'm not certain. It only became an issue after running the update mentioned earlier. I essentially removed everything and installed packages recommended by the Arch Wiki page for graphics. Everything appears to be working now.
I've been using Sway on Arch (with AMD GPU) for like 2 years, after switching from i3, and everything has been pretty good until it doesn't.
I switched my monitors to one model with high refresh rate and high resolutions (180Hz and 1440p) but Sway doesn't seem to like it... If you have the refresh rate higher than 60Hz, then suddenly artifacts appear everywhere (and no, this isn't my GPU problem, 100% sure) and this specific monitor is an OLED model, and Sway again doesn't seem to like it neither since the black colors randomly "flash", like that, you are looking into a straight dark color and you can see when suddenly the color turns a little brighter in the background, like an old TV.
And here I have two problems;
-
I can't use HDR (can but it's basically an increase in the brightness and it doesn't look good)
-
I can't use more than 60Hz, and no, VRR won't fix this, actually, if you enable VRR you monitor is locked to 60Hz anyway.
So basically, to use my monitor at its full strength I should use Plasma, which it's fine but I love Sway and Tilling Window Manager, or find another TWM that uses Wayland, what do you suggest?
And before you tell me something is wrong with the monitor/pc, I work on another PC with this monitor and I'm currently using Plasma in the same exact Arch installation where I have Sway installed with this problems, and none of these problems had appeared in almost 1 hour using the system.
I'm also aware that Hyprland exists, but I used it when I had NVIDIA some years ago and the experience was an completely headache + Current drama (I know this doesn't "affect" directly the product but....) + I don't really like that everything is so "Eye-candy", what I like of Sway is that is like an Vanilla i3.
And I also don't really like the idea of having multiple DEs/TWM installed on the same machine, this is probably some old myth that I read long ago that you shouldn't have installed multiple DEs since the config files may conflict, and for God's sake, I hate that installing Plasma also installs like 300+ packages that I don't have a single idea what they are... So I may just instead of distrohop I would TWM-hop or stay in Plasma for the best experience without enjoying the simplicity of an TWM.
ive set micro as my editor in yazi but when i hit Enter it opens a new document instead of editing the one ive selected. in my TOML i have this under opener.

any help would be great.
So I wanna create my own shell with Quickshell While I tried that months ago, the docs were really ominous and.. I didn't really come up with anything
Do you have any resources for making a desktop shell with Quickshell / QML? It can even be your dotfiles repo if it's relevant
I kinda get why people hate Ubuntu, corporate enshittification attempts (ads in terminal) and various attempts of non-standard standard creation with partly closed source (snaps).
Why don't people hate fedora for being derived from a corporate OS paradigm and being geared towards achieving the goals of the red hat org interfering with community driven OS stuff? The last I saw of it inexplicitly was the proposed AI integrations.
I do understand there's been several spinoffs to even re-create redhat without having the guys in red hat be in charge (alma, rocky, etc), so some contention appears to exist, I just don't see what's going on properly.
EDIT : I guess Open Suse is too niche and german to recieve the same hate?
EDIT2 : OK, my mistake in perspective, but you need to throw me a bone in that Red Hat corporation is "under legal responsibility" of the Red Hat Company/business/whatever, and has employees working on it. The idea that Fedora is RHEL with things removed is pretty close to RHEL is Fedora with things added, especially since it's "Oh, we have X Red Hat employees working on Y features for Fedora , and Z Red Hat employees working on features for RHEL". The business entity of Red Hat is the one at the head (more or less) of both endevours, which leads to my question.
Why does this corporate relationship and "steering" not cause any ire? It's even owned by IBM at the end of it all.
Relatively Linux Newbie here. Been playing with flavors of Linux/Unix/BSD for a few decades but only recently moved to having one as my primary OS.
My question is: Since I don't think of myself as a person of interest, is there a solid reason to do things like validate hashes or signatures when I get packages from a non-standard repo?
For example, I want to do something with a tool that doesn't have it's own repository. They have a website with a .deb or .tar.gz download and an accompanying signature file or hash. There are instructions for grabbing the public key from their domain so I can verify the file or there is a hash text string.
I can go verify a hash or signature... but if I got the file and the signature from the same place . . . If an attacker wanted to hand me bad code, couldn't they also hand me a bad signature/certificate/key?
If I was given a flash drive with a tool by a random person, then I might want to validate it, but if I download a file from an org that I went to on purpose then the org giving me their key doesn't seem to do much. Aside from file corruption, there's nothing to prove and a corrupted file is likely to fail in other ways such as a .gz checksum.
I'm not saying the practice is bad. But if I'm not important enough to have someone waiting to intercept my random app download and give me a backdoored version and I trust the developer to not be giving me malware in the first place, is there a need to verify?
I am trying to use find (or a similar tool, I also really like fd)
-
to locate directories matching the query
-
only those directories which are the deepest match
-
the target directories are not all the same depth, so
-maxdepthor-mindepthcan't do it -
it would be the opposite of
-prune
Given the below directory tree, looking for directories with "red" in the name, the ones with Yes should be the matches:
$ tree
.
├── blue = n
├── green = n
│ ├── red-apple = Yes
│ └── red-book = n
│ └── red-pen = Yes
├── red = n
│ └── red-strawberry = Yes
│ └──
└── yellow = n
└── basket = n
├── flag = n
│ └── red = Yes
└── painted-red = Yes
└── wagon = n
So "red-book" does not match because it contains a subsequent match ("red-pen"). But it's OK to have a deeper non-matching directory (like "painted-red").
This is my basic command which finds 2 unwanted items:
$ find . -type d -name "*red*"
./green/red-apple
./green/red-book
./green/red-book/red-pen # wrong
./yellow/basket/flag/red
./yellow/basket/red
./red # wrong
./red/red-strawberry

I know there are tools to set up a linux distro's installer on a USB flashdrive. What I'm looking for is slightly different: I want to install a linux distro (a Debian derivative, but am still unsure which) on a USB hard drive, but I want to do it from a running system, rather that have to boot into installer mode.
The rationale is that this is the only active machine I have ATM. I guess this exists since that's how "live distros" with installers even function in the first place, but I haven't had much luck searching for information.
After an update something must have broke. I depend on kid3 (KDE's audio tag editor) and it stopped working. I ran it from Konsole I am greeted by this:

Solved: OpenSnitch, https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch available via Software Manager on Mint as well.
There was a windows firewall (tinywall?) that worked like this:
- Something wouldn´t work on the internet.
- I'd query the firewall to see what was just blocked.
- I'd whitelist that traffic.
Pretty painless and I never was forced to think about the firewall until absolutely necessry, and then only to the least possible amount.
Is there any firewall on Linux that works similarly? Running Mint.
Hello Linux gang! Hopefully this is a quick one and I'll feel like a goober after. I am trying to mount a network share on a new VM. On my first VM, this seemed to work flawlessly. Here is the fstab entry for the working VM:
//192.168.1.186/gilashare /home/marighost/gilashare cifs uid=1000,gid=1000,credentials=/home/marighost/.sharelogin,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,x-systemd.automount,_netdev 0 0
The permissions for the .sharelogin are chmod'd to be 600.
In the .sharelogin itself, I can assure you that my username and password are correct, however, my password does contain a semicolon, if that matters at all (it doesn't seem to for VM 1).
I copied these over 1:1 into my new VM, and get the following error:
mount: /home/marighost/gilashare: cannot mount //192.168.1.186/gilashare read-only.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
So I check dmesg | less and see:
`[565649.948728] CIFS: enabling forceuid mount option implicitly because uid= option is specified
[565649.948730] CIFS: enabling forcegid mount option implicitly because gid= option is specified
[565649.948731] CIFS: Attempting to mount //192.168.1.186/gilashare
[565649.950091] CIFS: VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -13'
In searching for the solution for that return code (which doesn't really seem to map to a specific error), it seems like it's just "your password's wrong." But I can assure you that it isn't. .sharelogin on VM 2 has the same text and permissions as the file in VM 1. The fstab entries are identical. The mount points exist, each VM can see the share server and ping the IP.
I even tried mounting the share via the standard mount command with the following:
sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.186/gilashare /home/marighost/gilashare -o username=marighost,password=[REDACTED]
I mentioned earlier that my password contains a semicolon (;), which seems to effect Bash in ways I don't fully understand. I wrapped my password in the CLI with apostrophes (''), and the command takes, but nothing happens. Checking dmesg just shows [565649.948731] CIFS: Attempting to mount //192.168.1.186/gilashare with no errors, and the drive still does not mount.
I thank you for reading and taking the time to respond.
SOLVED EDIT: Remember to update your packages, folks. The Samba package was out of date on the file server. The reason VM1 worked is because they had the same package version. VM2 had the newer version.
Hey all!
Let me go stratight to the point:
I have an audio player in which I want to clone my ~/Music directory when I connect it to my computer. The only relevant thing about it is that it's a barebones filesystem and I cannot run cool stuff like Syncthing on the player (otherwise this question would already have a solution). Right now, my solution is that I connect the player to the computer and manually copy file to and delete files in the player. As you may have guessed, this is an error prone process. In order to solve that, I want to run a single command that clones ~/Music (src) into /path/to/player/Music (dst).
My requirements are:
- All new files in
srcMUST be copied intodst. - All files no longer present in
srcMUST be deleted fromdst. - All files present in both
srcanddstthat have more recent modifications insrcMUST be copied and overwritten intodst.
As you can see, my player's filesystem is a strict replica of my main computer's. Now, I know I can write a Python script in an afternoon to do just that, but I want to know if there are any good tools first to do this. I searched the web in hope that rsync would help me here, but the only answers I can find are for buffier cp. It may be that I have a vocabulary problem and I'm not searching for the correct terms.
I'd love to read your ideas! A note about LLMs: I'm not interested at all in any comments about how llm-of-the-week coded this in a moment, I asked fake-chat and here's what it said or whatever. If you are not a human that can be bothered to write an answer, I won't be bothered to read it.
Thank you!
I got this error after opening my laptop, I am using Kubuntu
Thanks in advance
UPDATE:
I fixed it by looking in system logs and I realised something was wrong ith the cloned mac address and I fixed it and now it works.
I can't consistently connect my android phone to my Linux Mint box consistently with any of the apps I've tried, because frankly, they are all janky as fuck. Sometimes they work instantly, then they disconnect and then they refuse to work. I feel like a lab rat in a random reinforcement maze because I think I've memorized the precise magical steps to get these services working, but it is just random.
Things I know about: How to turn off the firewall, how to turn on the firewall, how to open ports, how to close ports, how to keep a wifi network connected on android even if it has no internet connection, how to connect to the same wifi network, how to see if a device is visible on the network, how to find ip addresses, etc.
So here are the ones I've tried: KDEConnect (most reliable but I've spent 30 minutes on it today) LocalSend (tried it today, can see each other but "no route to host" when I try to send) Warpinator
I'm thinking of ditching WiFi and exploring Bluetooth at this point, even if it would take all night to transfer files, if it were reliable, it would be worth it.
Background: I run internet only through my phone, including downloads. To transfer files onto my computer, I need to connect my phone to my computer unless I want to burn through my hotspot data and download it directly to my computer. My USB-C port is unfortunately broken, so I have to do this.
A week ago I decided to give Fedora another try. I installed Fedora KDE and it caused me problems. I naturally thought it was a Fedora thing but ends up it was a KDE thing. So I installed my DWM repo and the problems I was having with Fedora went away. I don't want to use KDE anymore and would rather just keep using Fedora with DWM or a wayland WM.
My question is do I just keep using Fedora KDE or do I have to switch to another Fedora "spin"? I don't want to use KDE anymore, I'd love to just remove it all completely, switch login managers, and free up some space but apparently doing so would break my Fedora install from what I read online and that alone is making me question my decision to switch to Fedora. I feel like I'm "locked in" to a version of it I'm not really going to use. i.e. when it updates, it's going to update KDE with crap I won't use.
Can I remove KDE? switch login managers? is there an easier way to switch my Fedora version instead of having to reinstall the distro?
Distribution: Fedora Linux 44 (Workstation Edition)
I created a new Linux user and gave it admin with the gui interface, I then switched to it, but could not run sudo commands.
So I entered sudo usermod -a -G wheel [USER] to grant sudo rights through the cli, but still, the new user could not use sudo.
I logged in and out multiple times, but it did not help.
Then I restarted Linux and suddenly the new user could use sudo.
To test if it was now working, I striped sudo rights from the new user. But then I realized that the new user could still use sudo.
So it seems that sudo privileges only update on operating system restart? Is this correct, or is something wrong with my system?
Sorry if this is a stupid post
I installed some updates and after a restart the network manager thing in the taskbar said NetworkManager wasnt running so i tried to run it in terminal and it said i didnt have permission so i ran it with sudo and it worked. How do I get it to automatically start?
(I also posted this here: https://piefed.social/c/linux4noobs@programming.dev/p/2244265/networkmanager-doesn-t-run-on-startup)
UPDATE:
fixed with sudo apt install --reinstall network-manager
Upgraded to amd 5900xt & 7090xt and am experiencing random crashes. No overclock, no xmp/docp, no pbo (not defaults cause Asus has pbo on by default). 1000w seasonic PSU.
Whole screen goes green and reboots. Happens in heavy gaming, watching YouTube and even at idle.
Journalctl lists an mc5 hardware error suggests the cpu, but none of the troubleshooting has fixed it.
BIOS updated, c-states disabled, triple checked all settings, fully up to date Arch, but still randomly crashes.
Where do I go from here?
Hi there!
I recently switched from Arch Linux after a decade and now settled on Void Linux. So far so good. However sometimes I gather minor things here and there. My current issue is, the proprietary drivers of Nvidia still seeking systemd for some parts and not sure how to walk around this.
I cannot suspend my PC because when I wake it up I always see something about nvidia-sleep.sh. Probably it cannot wake the GPU up properly.
This is
nvidia-sleep.sh:
#!/bin/bash
if [ ! -f /proc/driver/nvidia/suspend ]; then
exit 0

RUN_DIR="/var/run/nvidia-sleep"
XORG_VT_FILE="${RUN_DIR}"/Xorg.vt_number

I'm using Niri so no desktop environment here if that helps. My driver is nvidia580. Also using greetd (w/ tuigreet). So, what can I do here?
Linux void 6.18.38_1
pkgver: runit-2.3.1_1
Nvidia 580.159.04
Edit: Tried nouveau and suspend works with it. However because Nvidia didn't provide firmware blobs for my card (GTX 1080) I cannot use the open drivers well.
Edit 2: Tried to give power management from acpid to elogind, thinking it might help to fool this script since it's systemd's standalone part here. Currently elogind both handles my seat and power management. I actually had some hope here, but sadly didn't work. Here are my elogind config files anyway:
/etc/elogind/logind.conf.d/logind.conf

Nvidia, this is for you:

On Mint. Tried installing Anki from the app store, but the web was unhappy with that version's time zone handling, so I couldn't sync.
I downloaded the tarball from the developer and it installed fun, but when I run it I get:

I've checked that location and libqxcb.so is exactly there where it should be, so I'm not sure why it can't read.

Any ideas?

Try installing the packages mentioned here: https://docs.ankiweb.net/platform/linux/installing.html#requirements
