I switched to one you recommended with vulkan renderer eventually, because opengl renderer had some graphical artefacts I couldn't get rid of e.g this texture fighting

For some reason in-game screenshots are broken on vulkan renderer (grey rectangles) so I'm using system screenshotter.

Also the game has pretty harsh mipmapping (or idk how is this called). Is cranking up anisotropic filtering the only way to get rid of it?

Is it somehow possible to use nearest neighbour interpolation for textures?

Thanks! I went with this one https://github.com/tx00100xt/SeriousSamClassic

Mouse was a bit janky at first but it's alright now after I disabled acceleration, set sharp turning option and I also had to set sensitivity to as low as 4% for some reason.

I see it's based on port by icculus (he's fucking legend) but I couldn't get his version to compile because it's 10 year old c++ code and c++ compiler devs hate backwards compat

Classic DOOM has best Linux support of all games in my opinion. Because it was opensourced and plenty of great community-maintained source ports.

Doom has tons of amazing community-made content (WADs) made within last 30 years. Like what other games have mods that feature whole original soundtracks? It also has pretty competitive speedrunning and multiplayer scene. And some very, very difficult levels.

So to play the game you need port and also IWAD files containing levels, textures, etc. Official iwads are not free. So your options are

    1. Buy D1+D2 on steam/gog, grab the iwads, ignore official source port and go play much better community ones
    2. Pirate the iwads. Extremely easy, the files didn't change since the 90s and have been shared all over the Internet.
    3. First episode of D1 is free. Search for Doom Shareware. It's packaged in some distros even.
    4. Use the community-made iwad replacements from freedoom project. These are completely foss and also the website has some source port recommendations so probably start with them. I myself started playing DOOM with freedoom :)

I struggle to find a server with humans and not bots and also some servers appear many times in the list (I guess their owners are trying to cheat the system). OpenArena server list looks much more civil in comparison:

So are there any other server list for Q3 or are default master servers all there is? Perhaps well known servers that people frequent

I've used pavucontrol throughout pretty much all my Linux life. But it only controls pulseaudio side of things. I found that it does not work that well with pipewire.

For example if I do something like wpctl set-mute 56 toggle, the mute state is not reflected in any way in pavucontrol, but I see that the device is muted for example in alsamixer.

    Any good pipewire-native volume control?

I need to be able to launch a program in the background, make it persist after the "parent" terminal closes and be able to access its stdin/stdout from another terminal. I don't care about multiplexing.

I've been using tmux for this but I don't like how it hijacks my mouse and that i'm not able to use my terminal's search feature and have to use what tmux tui provides instead. In other words, programs launched directly in the terminal feel more comfortable to work with than when they are launched inside tmux.

I feel the ideal program should behave much simpler. Like e.g. on attach it should clear the screen, print the stdout buffer it accumulated and give me stdin prompt, that's it.

I like writing the Game of Life as a helloworld program when learning graphics libraries because the naive algorithm is very easy to implement. It is however pretty slow. I want to try writing something more efficient than doing a whole pass through the board each frame, so I wonder which "fast" algorithm is more or less easy to understand and implement?

Suppose I filter history and find the item I wanted to find. But I also want to see all the history items around that time. So naturally I expect when I click that × for the history to center on that selected item, but instead it brings me back to the start. Also it would be nice to see the date and time I searched for that item (perhaps when hovering over it?)
