I think banning it from being a business venture is a good idea, and realistically the technology for generative AI will stay even if there's an outright ban.

People will still be able to build their own models and cybersecurity defense will continue keeping up with black hat hacking, but corpos like OpenAI, or divisions like Google's numerous AI divisions, should be banned unless it has an explicit purpose for research in things like the medical field, and have generative AI as we know it right now be culled.

They also assume you're out of control of everything, like talking about how you overcame a mental health issues without following popular advice, then it delivers an unnecessarily condescending "reality check"

I'm glad I've stopped using the mainstream AI sites entirely over a year ago, they may be more helpful compared to local LLMs and SLMs but they assume you're using it because you can't depend on yourself.

I hope these reality checks improve enough to actually be helpful and be based on the described situation, not just be a cookie cutter response enforced by a system prompt

I'd say all generations are affected by this.

My dad (gen X) for example, he has tiktok, Instagram and Facebook on his phone and watches YouTube shorts on his tablet. It's everyday life for him to scroll on these platforms for over 8 hours per day. It's like he becomes brain-dead every time he comes into contact with a glass sandwich.

For myself (gen Z), I used to scroll Instagram reels for at most 2 hours per day when I was in high school, but now I barely touch it, instead I prefer long form YouTube documentaries and sandbox games. The worst of it is my around 5 minutes or less of YouTube shorts daily and browsing lemmy for around tops 2 hours per day but effectively 1 on average.

I also believe that the stereotyping of gen Z being addicted to everything digital is a bit dubious, since we've lived through life as "digital natives" and are likely more able to avoid addiction. The ones I worry about are the older generations, since many fall into the trap of accidentally integrating these addictive services into their routines and get more severe health consequences such as early Alzheimer's or putting too much faith into LLMs and for example change their medication dosages without actual approval from their doctor, and many other examples.

Reminds me of the chill ass cat I saw on a walk a few days ago. My siblings and I thought it was a stray until the door of the house the cat was outside of opened and the owner sternly told it to come back inside.

Bro was just trying to eat some grass in peace
