Console market craters as Xbox sales crash 33% to the lowest since launch 25 years ago, PS5 sales drop 25% — steep price hikes push Series X to $800 and PS5 Pro to $900

Video game console sales in the U.S. have cratered, with both the PS5 and Xbox seeing a massive drop in YTD sales through the end of August compared with last year. From Circana's US Retail Tracking Service: For 2026 YTD ending August, Xbox hardware unit sales are down 33% versus a year ago in the US, while PlayStation hardware units are 25% lower. Xbox YTD US hardware unit sales are at an all-time low, while PlayStation is at lowest point since 2013. PlayStation fans haven’t escaped these price hikes, as Sony raised prices for that console by $100 to $150. Even used consoles didn't escape inflation, with Sony bumping the price of refurbished PS5 Slim consoles by $100, bringing them to $399. 🖊️️🤖

RimWorld switches engine from Unity to the devs' own, faster Waylith Engine, all apparently without breaking mods somehow

Ludeon Studios, developers of sci-fi colony construction sim RimWorld, have announced in a Steam update that the game will be moving over from Unity to the studio's own in-house Waylith Engine in its upcoming update 1.7. Ludeon states that the game will "look and play exactly the same", but performance will see an improvement of around 2-4x. Ludeon notes that some may appear as "potentially unsupported" due to the version changing, but will still function just the same. Saves also can be carried over from 1.6 to 1.7, meaning there'll be no loss of progress just for updating. The more indies that can free themselves from commercial engine software, the better. 🖊️️🤖

US Rep proposes bill to give video game buyers “ownership,” not “a license”

The bill, which is called the Power to Players Act, directs the FTC to take action to prevent outcomes like that in the future. Torres published the following statement on the bill:When you pay for a game, you should own it. Consumers must have the right to own, the right to play, and the right to transfer the games they buy. A wider movementThe bill comes at a time when game ownership and preservation is a hot-button issue. PS5 emulator successfully runs six titles at a playable 60 FPS — PS5 emulation continues to gather momentum as developers improve shader translation and Vulkan support

Developers of SharpEmu — an experimental, open-source PS5 emulator — have successfully run PS5 games at a playable 60 FPS on the emulator. According to an X post on September 25, the developers reached this milestone for six of 55 titles tested, with 12 — including the six playable — reaching gameplay. The six 60 FPS titles are Dreaming Sarah, Void Terrarium, New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja, Tetris Forever, Hoa, and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered. Developed in C#, the SharpEmu PS5 emulator supports Windows, Linux, and macOS and uses Vulkan and MoltenVK for graphics API calls. Of those 12, only six performed cleanly enough to be designated as “playable” at a full 60 FPS. 🖊️️🤖

Wiki documents at least 44 instances in which Sony says you own your games as digital games ownership lawsuit progresses — project is direct assault on Sony's claim in recent ownership lawsuit

In a recent lawsuit against Sony, the firm argued that "reasonable consumers would not be misled" into believing they own digital games that they "purchased" on the PlayStation Store. Folks on the Consumer Rights Wiki have now compiled a humongous list of specific instances in which Sony currently states that users do, in fact, own their digital PS4 and/or PS5 games. (Image credit: Zak Killian/Future)The case isn't exactly about ownership, though; it's really about consumer disclosure and product representation. And so we come back around to the Consumer Rights Wiki and its list of times that Sony has explicitly used ownership language on its website and on its digital storefront. The Consumer Rights Wiki was of course founded by consumer rights advocate and YouTuber Louis Rossmann, but much of the work was done by the community that has sprung up around the site as people rebel against the continuous erosion of their consumer rights, particularly by technology companies that argue against their own responsibility. 🖊️️🤖

SWISS plans to donate last A340-300 to transport museum

SWISS and the Swiss Museum of Transport are working together to preserve one of the airline’s last Airbus A340-300s as a permanent museum exhibit in Lucerne. SWISS CEO Jens Fehlinger remarked that, for many years, the A340 connected people in Switzerland with the world, becoming a piece of Swiss aviation history in its own right. For Martin Ettlinger, Director of the Swiss Museum of Transport, having an A340 on site represents a unique chance to preserve an important chapter of Swiss aviation and make it accessible to the public. While SWISS will donate the aircraft itself, the museum will bear the costs of transport, structural work, and creating the visitor experience on board. A fundraising committee led by Christoph Franz, President of the Swiss Museum of Transport Association and former CEO of SWISS, is already in discussions with potential supporters. 🖊️️🤖

GoldenEye 007 for N64 has been '100% decompiled' — success of half-decade project opens up possibilities for complex mods and ports

A reverse engineering and retro gaming enthusiast has finally succeeded in their goal of decompiling GoldenEye 007, the monumental James Bond adventure shooter from Rare. GoldenEye 007 launched on the Nintendo 64 in August 1997, and was an immediate hit. Eventually, GoldenEye 007 would sell over eight million cartridges for Nintendo and become the console’s third biggest-selling title. Instead, enthusiasts should wait until good human-built and tuned ports start to be released. Earlier this year, we also reported on a cancelled Xbox 360 version of GoldenEye 007 getting recompiled for the PC. 🖊️️🤖

I'm really happy with this thing. I considered the RG SP but it was $20-30 more expensive. Meanwhile, good offers were being made for the 34XX-SP which is basically the same device.

Initial impressions:

  • The yellow model looks great IRL, less saturated than in pictures.
  • 4:3 games aren't that small on the screen, bezels aren't an issue.
  • Controls are great, clicky but not loud. Bumpers are better than the RG35XX-H's. I love the thin D-pad. Only dislike: the function button is too loud. 🖍🤖

Sony still hasn't chosen a PlayStation 6 release date, says CEO, as RAM crisis continues

It turns out that these factors are putting so much pressure on console manufacturers that Sony hasn't even got a release date for the PlayStation 6 internally. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroko Totoki revealed that multiple parts of the Sony hardware business are being affected by the on-going component crisis. "Totoki said the company still hasn't fixed a date for PS6's launch," summarised the Wall Street Journal. Safe to say, then, we're probably going to wait a while for Sony's next console. It's also likely that Sony is going to push harder into subscriptions and cross-generational games. 🖊️️🤖

Among the fixed vulnerabilities was one for the remastered version of the classic 25-year-old war strategy video game Age of Empires II. The flaw allowed hackers to take over a victim’s computer by sending a custom malicious game invite, according to security researchers. A video posted on X shows how the flaw could be exploited by hackers. There is no evidence that this bug was successfully exploited in the wild by hackers. But targeting video gamers can be an effective way to install malware on a high number of victims’ computers and steal their passwords, for example. 🖊️️🤖

*PaperClip on the Atari 8-Bit*

is posed by this cute word processorThe Atari line of 8-bit computers has always been a bit of a chimera to me.
ANTIC went further still, using it on Atari hardware to produce their Atari magazine, sending stories to their photo-typesetting service by modem.
In fact, I'm doing so right now, typing this very post into PaperClip on the Atari XE.
PaperClip on the Atari was a complete machine language rewrite which shared only the name and perhaps general guidance on feature requirements.
Whatever the case, Reichmann left Batteries Included in 1987, before any of the expanded PaperClip line had shipped. 🖊️️🤖

Epic Games CEO says it’s ‘really irresponsible’ of Steam to make studios disclose AI use

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has criticised rival Valve for forcing studios to disclose when they use AI in game development. Since 2024, Valve has required developers to disclose on Steam whether generative AI was used in the creation of their games. This then appears on the game’s store page in a section called ‘AI Generated Content Disclosure’. Earlier this month at a State of Unreal event in Chicago, Epic showed how AI large language models (LLMs) can be used directly with Unreal Engine 6 to generate content. Epic stressed that developers will have final control over their creations and can manually change their results. 🖊️️🤖

Valve aren't putting any exclusives on the Steam Machine because they see "the whole PC catalog as our 'launch exclusive'"

The Steam Machine is going to sit in an odd place when it arrives. But it differs from most traditional consoles in that it won't be coming with any games exclusive to the hardware. That's because for Valve, they want the Steam Machine to be as open as possible. As Bloomberg notes, more people with PC hardware ultimately benefits Valve, as it means more people buying games through Steam. As mentioned, there's no plans for a Steam Machine exclusive, despite the infinitely spawning rumours about a new Half-Life that seem to crop up at least once a month. 🖊️️🤖

CD Projekt Red boss believes some fans were forever burned by Cyberpunk 2077's disastrous launch: 'I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely'

The infamous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was a low point in CD Projekt Red's history. Yet at the same time, Cyberpunk 2077 was a huge commercial success, and CD Projekt used some of those profits to fix its broken blockbuster. Its 2.0 patch, combined with the excellent Phantom Liberty expansion, addressed many of the RPG's problems, successfully turning around the game's reputation and cementing its place as a roleplaying great. "I'm convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that's a fair thing. We have a rough ten-year rolling plan, but the goal is not to flood the games market with CDPR games." 🖊️️🤖

Microsoft researcher builds goat-powered neural network in Age of Empires 2 to show why we should 'stop assuming that LLMs behave like humans just because they were trained with natural language'

Since large-language models like ChatGPT can generate natural language responses that appear human-like in tone, this has led to considerable discussion over whether LLMs might themselves be sentient. But because the fundamentals are goats and grass rather than natural language, it prevents observers from perceiving the resulting behaviours and output as human. The reason this is important is that assuming LLMs have human-like properties without demonstrative proof could lead us to all manner of problems, such as in scientific research. "I propose that we need to stop assuming that LLMs behave like humans just because they were trained with natural language," de Wynter said. "Instead, we should perform experiments that allow us to see LLMs as how they are, not how we believe they should be." 🖊️️🤖

The core direction is locked in: a dispatcher-first, planning-layer space logistics game with hard-SF flavour and no combat. The current work is focused on building out the full playable loop across contracts, route planning, ships, captains, events, company management, and the system map. 🖊️️🤖

"I torture myself over every last detail": Stardew Valley's creator is having a real time of it with Haunted Chocolatier's recipe book interface

Stardew Valley creator Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone has released his latest reminder that yes, he's still working on Haunted Chocolatier, the action-RPG and life sim in which you run a sweetshop in a realm of ghosts. This particular blogpost is notable for a mildly agonised aside about the game's recipe book interface, which needs to be "seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic", in a word, perfect. The data needs to be grouped into compelling, intuitive and easy to read/understand groupings. "If all of that is accomplished then the player is now comfortable while perusing the recipe book.
