He is a pos in other matters, but he's been consistent here (unless he had a musk like role to be an inside voice doing just enough to make the effort ineffective at the end of the day - as with musk and high speed rail efforts/funding in California).

Install an app that monitors their usage (with consent of course). Run for a week or month. Justify with their own data. "You only actually do these 4 things. Let's look at each of these good replacements for them" One at a time, gated. If 1 works, we move to 2, etc. When all done conversation is you like these 4 now, they all run on Linux, let's backup all your files and switch to Linux. You'll have all your programs, and the files you need. And we'll start with a skin closest to macOS look and feel.

The answer to you're question is literally the last sentence in the message ur responding to - do something means go support change where you can, run for office or support someone who is with the right ideas, directly. If you can't do that, you shut up - shut up and go to brunch, head in sand. And stay quiet about it all, verbally , through typed messages and memes. if you can't do that and be done, then you actively live in the discomfort , confront this horrific shit head on until it drives you to action. Those are your options.

Don't feed starving kids for free! A business somewhere might profit from their hunger and you are depriving them that opportunity!

It's called "ProfLifting" because you are STEALING the businesses opportunity to potentially profit.

So many of you in the comments are subject to exactly what the article describes:

"Part of the problem with the stories of Epstein, Trump, and the corruption all come down to the same thing: The bit-by-bit release of information has created a long record of abhorrent behavior, which means that the bar to shock is so high it’s almost impossible to clear. There is a kind of disgust fatigue at play: Yeah, we know Epstein was a disgusting sex predator, and that some of the men around him probably partook too; what’s new? Those who are ideologically motivated to believe Trump at all costs are also probably motivated to believe him on Epstein too; very little seems like it would change the minds of hardcore MAGA adherents."

They said they worked to "flood the zone with shit" and you are all spewing it today. Calm down with the surprise memes. Sit in the hard feelings, shut up or do something about it

"On this occasion, the journalists who thought they were traveling with Trump on the older Air Force One reported being advised to keep their window shades in the press cabin closed. The Post said some White House staff also believed the president was on board.

When asked later by reporters why they had to keep their shades shut during the flight, Trump said it was because they were “probably on a dangerous flight”. He went onto say: “But if I go, you go. Right?”

The C-32A carrying Trump flew to Britain, arriving at about 10.20pm local time with the older Air Force One and media arriving minutes later, the Post reported."

There are so many options to get started with self hosting that I feel myself stuck in the "paralysis of choice". For a novice, does anyone have a good resource for the equivalent of good/better/best paths that cover the "basics" (In my mind this is hosting images, music, video, connected home controls, search and email)?

Thinking something like first try path A, if you feel comfortable and your HW can handle A, then try path B, etc. I guess a it of a tutorial mode feeling where you get exposed to key boxing blocks initially and then you are released into the large open world on your own.

I know the advantage of this movement is the choice and the well distributed variety, but just feels hard to start.

I have an old laptop, an SFF workstation and a NAS to play with.

    Any suggestions?

Edit: Thank you all for a very generous response. I knew this was a tough ask from the start because, by design, this area is vast and constantly evolving. A lot of great starting points here that I'm now considering.
