It is implemented in a plainly malicious manner.

Once you find the option buried in developer settings, get past the 2 scare screens and enter your pin it tells you that you need to reboot and wait 24 hours. The two options it gives you are: "Reboot Later" and "Cancel". Not only is the requirement to reboot arbitrary, not presenting an option to do so immediately makes it seem like they hope you will forget to reboot later and the flow will deactivate.

If you reboot the 24 hour period starts, but there's no notification when it ends. You are only able to enable the setting for the next 34 hours. NOWHERE before this is any time limitation mentioned, and if you forget about it and come back to it it will not mention why you need to wait another 24 hours.

If you remember in the time window it presents you with the most egregious scare screen yet: altr

Your device may be exposed to apps created by developers known to have distributed harmful apps

I find this personally insulting. It's just plainly defamtory to every unregistered developer. If a supermarket put up an ad that says "If you buy from independent shops you might be exposed to shops known to have sold rotten produce" that would be illegal right?

After that it makes you choose between 7 days and permanent. If you accidentally turn it off you have 10 minutes to re enable before you need to reboot and wait again.

This is partially a rant, partially a question and partially a commitment device.

Earlier today I was thinking about how much I liked HL2 and didn't like Doom 2016 when it dawned on me. Sure, the moment to moment gameplay of HL2 feels tighter and the level variety is much greater; but the thing I enjoyed about it the most was the complete lack of optional content.

In HL2 here's no score, no collectibles, no upgrades and no side objectives. You play with the tools given to you in the way you find the most fun. Doom 2016 not only has those things, but they're not even restricted to a end of the level screen like the original Doom. You actually have to do optional objectives if you want to upgrade your weapons! So I played most of it with the long list of things I needed to do before finishing the level constantly occupying my mind.

Recently I started playing 2 new games, both of which I just realized I'm doing similar things in: Meteo Exodus and Lego Skywalker Saga. With Metro, I had a guide detailing the places of collectibles open from the moment I stated playing. This was out of habit, I played the previous 2 games the same way because I hated to see "not found" in place of a journal entry. But this game seems to place the entries in much more obvious spots compared to those two, and it's obviously supposed to be an exploration game.

With Lego, I was playing the story with minimal exploration because I knew some secrets would be unattainable without freeplay so if I want them I will need to replay the level anyways. But I also know from experience that exploring as you go is the most fun part..

So I guess the question is, what should I do? Go on as I've been or somehow overcome the urge? If so, how?

I kind of think the solution to this problem is modding. Like to make the progression system of Doom 2016 be only based on which level you're in, unlock all diary entries you haven't found when finishing a level in Metro, or have freeplay powers the first time you play a level in Lego.

What do you think?

Hi, I've been having this problem with my system for like a week where it just locks up and has to be hard restarted. The screen freezes, input devices are unresponsive, bluetooth disconnects, sftp server stops etc. This can happen anytime; while I'm moving the mouse, in a game, while idling.. And the worst part is that when I check the journal afterwards there's absolutely nothing there. No errors, no coredumps, no other messages (from the freeze time)

I've run the aur malware checker and it's clean. I've also updated the system a couple times and it feels like the frequency of freezes only increased over time.

That makes me suspicious of a hardware failure, but I've had similarly strange problems before and every time it was a software problem. I've started a memtest (clean so far) but I'm not sure what else to do on that front. What component's failure would result in a freeze, but not a crash or any errors?

System is zen4 with nvidia graphics.

Anyone experiencing something similar? Are there new driver / system incompatibilities that I should know about? How would you debug this? Is there a way to figure out the origin of the freeze despite the empty journal?

Edit: Memtest passed 3 times. Now it's burned into the lcd screen 🥲😭 Edit: burn-in gone after color cycling

Edit 2: I think the problem is the bios settings after all. I had a -6 curve optimizer offset, and the freezing hasn't happened since I removed it. Silicon degrades over time, apparently.

Edit 3: Nope it froze again

Edit 4: After the last edit I installed cachyos on a separate partition and I've been using that for the last week. It hasn't crashed even though I reenabled curve optimizer after installing it, so I think the issue must be with my Arch installation.

Edit 5: It froze literally 2 hours after the last edit. I think I found the cause though, it's most probably this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=311723 Here's hoping it wone freeze again

When I read about immersive sims online I keep seeing them described as systemic games that give the player choices for solving the problems they come across. But in my experience the different choices you have are so imbalanced in terms of applicability, rewards and exclusivity that I find it hard seeing them as such.

In Bioshocks the aggressive combat playstyle is viable everywhere, is the most rewarding both in terms of gameplay and resources and doesn't lock you out of anything. The alternative playstyles can still be used situationally to access any exclusive treasure. On the flipside going all in on an alternative playstyle takes more time and often amounts to skipping content.

Frankly I don't like either, I don't want to miss out on content and I don't want my choices to be meaningless.

With Bioshocks and Prey the meta is playing aggressively. With Dishonored it's stealth. To me the whole scheme seems antithetical to the game structure of a linear story based game. The developer can't craft a particular experience because they have to accommodate for different options, and the options can't be too different because the path is the same.

The games that best fit the description for me are BotW and Minecraft or even Hitman, none of which is considered an immersive sim. The popular immersive sims seem closer to Batman Arkham games, which have no pretense of player choices save for what tools you use in combat, than they are to the aforementioned titles.

So, which immersive sim did you play that fulfills the immersive sim premise?

Hi, I'm relaying a problem my gf is having. She has an acer laptop with Intel + nvidia hardware and a ThinkPad Thunderbolt dock. Running arch with kde. Whenever she starts bevy engine, including its demos, the dock disconnects and reconnects, causing everything connected to it to also do the same.

The journal has some GL_FRAMEBUFFER_INCOMPLETE_ATTACHMENT errors but I also have some in my journal so I think they aren't specific to bevy.

I don't understand how a user program can cause such an issue. Even if bevy has a bug I don't think it should affect peripherals? Has anyone seen something like this?
