I'm not lying, I'm genuinely confused.

Based on how Americans online talk about shopping, it seems to me that if I go to America and see a $5 price tag on something, I have to pay more than $5 to get it, and Americans just accept this as normal.

What is different about what Dollar General is doing?

I am asking sincerely.

Wait, isn't this standard practice in America? Done openly and legally? And when we foreigners point out that the display price should be the amount of money you need to give to get the thing, Yanks get frustrated as they attempt to explain yet again that showing a price lower than the cost is normal and good?

You buy 10 copies of a specific collectible card for $5 each. Everybody is willing to pay $5 for each card you own, so you theoretically have $50 in the form of trading cards.

But then people want that card a lot for whatever reason. They want it so much you could sell yours for $8 each. So now, without having done anything, you have $80 in the form of trading cards.

But then people decide your cards are actually lame and don't want to buy tgrm any more. If you were to sell them, you'd only get $1 each, so you only have $10 worth of trading cards. Thus, your cards are worth $70 less than they were, even though all the actual money is still out there and you have all the trading cards you originally bought.

To rephrase, the value of your investment fell by $70.

This is how stocks work. When the media reports that some money was wiped off the stock market, all the money still exists. It's just that people decided some stocks are lame and not worth buying, which means the owners of those stocks can't sell them for as much as they could have the previous day.

The prisoners at Lavi prison had saved up food over several days to make the cake in order to express hope that the vote will lead to [Itamar Ben-Gvir's] exit from the government. Prison guards found the cake in a cell, prompting officials to take disciplinary measures against the eight and send them to solitary confinement. Ben-Gvir praised prison officials for the decision and mocked prisoners' lack of access to food. "The terrorists in Lavi Prison sat and hoarded what little food they had, a spoonful of jam here, a slide of bread there, day after day," he wrote in a social media post. "They did this for several days, all so they could make an improvised cake and celebrate if I am not elected," he continued.

Palmer Luckey of Anduril is teaming with Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences to launch Warhound, a startup dedicated to genetically engineering and cloning dogs for service in war, police work and first responder work. Speaking to Wired, Lamm explained that the project was twofold. One part of the project would oversee the genetic engineering and cloning of the ideal dogs for war, and the other would develop tech for them to use on battlefields.

"I said, 'Sundar, I'm thinking of the Atlantic Ocean. Can you handle it?' "'No, no, no, this time I'm not doing it,' he said, 'Oceans are different, sir. They cover a lot of - really a lot of countries. Please don't ask us to do that.'" The US president later said he would "probably pass" and keep the name Atlantic, before saying, "We're going to call it the American Ocean".

Now, increased demand for traditional fishmeal – which is made from small species caught in the open ocean – has sent the industry scrambling for alternatives.

The stuff being used to make fish feed is a byproduct of the poultry industry – it’s what is left over after the parts of the chicken consumed by humans and the remains used for cat and dog food have been removed.

The decision by Douma City Council in the Damascus countryside prohibits "the groom entering women's celebrations in the halls of Douma city", according to a copy of the order published by the council. It means that even the groom himself cannot enter the women's section of a wedding celebration. In socially conservative parts of Syria, weddings are usually segregated by gender. However at the end of the women's party the groom usually enters to meet the bride and take her home.

Infants in the UK have been referred to the government's controversial Prevent counter-terrorism scheme hundreds of times since 2016, in what monitoring groups say has been a means of intimidating and scaring parents into engaging with officials. Through a series of Freedom of Information requests by Hyphen, it was revealed that babies under the age of two were referred to Prevent 86 times between 2016-17 and 2023-24, with over two-thirds (59) of these referrals over so-called “Islamist” concerns. At the same time, children aged two to five were referred to Prevent a further 500 times.

A person in Northern Ireland was scammed out of £250,000 (approximately €291,000) by what police have described as a "sophisticated" AI-generated investment fraud. It began after the Co Down-based victim responded to an online video featuring a well-known personality from the financial sector. It offered an investment opportunity with "significant" returns. After the victim had invested a relatively modest amount, they were contacted via Whatsapp and encouraged to put in more.
