I could also be misunderstanding how it's supposed to work lol. I definitely agree with your sentiment that it would be great to be able to more easily toggle NSFW post visibility on or off. Going through the profile settings is kind of cumbersome.
I just discovered this button the other day, and from what I can tell, you're misunderstanding the function. NSFW mode ON removes non NSFW content. If you want to remove NSFW content, toggle it from your account settings.

When using "Hide Read", the app behaves normally for a couple of pages, then abruptly pops this screen and removes all navigation and UI from the app until it's restarted.

Was bored on Wednesday night so I tried my hand at doing a project w/o measuring or any semblance of a plan. Please note that the different spacing between the shelves is intentional to be able to fit my glasses properly.
