Brave of you to assume we all eat 3 a day.
post
IT'S STARTED. THE POWERS THAT BE ARE PREPARING THEIR "JUST DON'T EAT, CITIZEN" PROPAGANDA BEFORE THE COLLAPSE OF THE GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN.
"Everyone, deep in their hearts, is waiting for the end of the world to come."
Is this a bunch of bots or does nobody else have blood sugar.
You don't get sugar crashes if you don't eat copious amounts of sugar
I get them at around 11 in the morning. I eat wholemeal bread with no sugar crunchy peanut butter for breakfast.
Bread and peanut butter are both relatively large sources of sugar…
Depends on exactly what peanut butter you buy, but the popular ones do have a lot of sugar
that's a very broad statement, unsweetened bread barely has any sugar at all.
In the context of blood sugar, carbohydrates is the sugar being discussed, not cane sugar, and bread in almost all forms is just pure simple carbs. Peanut butter is at least a bit more complex, but would still cause blood sugar problems. If you’re trying to avoid diabetes, daily peanut butter bread is probably a bad call.
Maybe your trouble is the bread. Wholemeal are carbs and carbs are sugar. The sugarless peanut butter should not be causing any sugar crashes.
Caveat. Not a trained specialist here. Just someone who has been trying to sort my issues out and wanting to share.
complex carbs are not comparable to simpler sugars, the body has to do a significant amount of processing to turn the carbs into readily usable sugar.
You also need carbs in your diet, it's the main fuel source for the body and it's difficult to avoid anyways (all vegetables have loads of carbs, even peanuts are 17% carbs.
Your body starts producing sugar for you to eat if you fast too long. That's why they tell diabetics to eat or snack every 2ish hours. To keep your glucose level
It doesn't produce a huge amount of glucose, mainly a baseline to keep your brain fed. The rest of your body just starts using different sources for food because it generally doesn't need glucose.
Your body prefers to consume glycogen, which your liver produces from glucose. Most people's livers store enough to go about a day if they aren't participating in strenuous activities.
Also, diabetics are told to eat snacks throughout the day because it can be dangerous for them to eat large meals. Large meals often mean a lot of sugar, and since they either can't produce insulin or are resistant to it, they can't easily signal to their fat cells to store the excess energy
People that are fit don't have to worry about blood sugar.
Have you applied to SNAP and checked out local food pantries? If you’re down to a sandwich a day I promise that’s what they’re there for! I know availability for services is locally dependent, but I hope you can find something.
There’s a food bank in my town (we donate to it) where you can walk in and take food, no questions asked. I have to think there’s something like that near you?
Well that sucks, I’m sorry to hear that. If only we lived in a country that bothers to take care of its people.
Are there churches that do stuff? Or a Sikh community? My church has a free meal after the last Sunday service and they have a fridge sitting outside their hall where you can leave and take meals.
:'-( hard for me to understand that most don't see food as a right. Most especially in Canada / USA / Europe will never understand true hunger and poverty. I see this as good and bad. Would be best if no one ever had to know.
3 meals a day are fine. So are two meals a day or five. That was precisely MFK Fisher's point, paraphrased in the article's introduction. What you eat and how much are far the more important concerns.
Well, fasting is not for everyone. Female biology often benefits from regular eating (small quantities), for example. People with gastritis, with PMOS, diabetes, etc. may find fasting hard. Intuitive eating is interesting, but people may have a problem confusing 'intuition' with 'body signals' that are not great; for example, if I were to intuitively eat while on ADHD medication, I'd eat nothing, and the opposite for bad days, I'd feel that my body is 'naturally' asking me for extra food.
So, while I agree that we should be brave to change the three meals a day if it isn't for us, I'd recommend getting enough information and medical advice before changing anything.
"Stop eating for pleasure" is BS, too. We shouldn't overindulge, but we need to find food appealing in order to stick with our personalized diet. These messages about food and eating being 'a problem' are not good for people in risk of developing an eating disorder...
Sauce for the female biology bit? Ive never heard that before.
I'm going outside today. I'll try to answer later, but in case I forget for a few days, google something like: "Is fasting good for women?" or "Fasting and female hormones", etc. Apparently, fasting can help lose weight, yes, but it can trigger some spikes in cortisol and hormonal changes. I guess because the AFAB bodies are always looking out for "the potential baby" and fasts may trigger some: "beware, you need to be strong for the future baby". Same reason for stronger fat storage (for "the baby"), I think. But I'm not a doctor and I might be ill-informed (badly informed?).
isn't this.. kinda transphobic?
On the contrary, I am supposing that intersex and other non-binary, divergent sexual individuals who, one way or the other, depend on the estrogens and such hormones will find that their bodies (their brains) are expecting the AFAB/female cycles and details, and then they'll live the same experience of high cortisol while fasting, the hormonal changes, etc. That's why I prefer to call it a "female biology" and not "women's" because there's probably in here someone who has that body, that sex, but not that gender identity. Also, I'm not a doctor so I don't know for sure about intersex and trans bodies, but I doubt science knows a lot more, TBH. We'll have to wait for science to research bodies inclusively.
Do what you need for your body to function properly. If that's the 3 meals a day deal then fine. If you eat small items throughout the day to maintain energy levels for health reasons or because that's how your body operates best is fine as well. We are seriously hitched up on this stupid concept of "normality" in society.
Shit, I just eat when I'm hungry, which is usually just once a day sometime in the evening. Occasionally I'll also eat midday around lunchtime too, but not often. To hell with that 3 meals a day shit though, I think my belly would explode if I ate that much.
I haven't eaten three meals a day since I was in middle school. And not because I couldn't afford to.
What about a second breakfast?
I just eat whenever I feel hungry on no particular schedule. It is 6:43 PM where I am at and I only ate two hard-boiled eggs ten minutes ago all day. Lololol.
Now try feeding an entire family a healthy diet.
Easy. Pot of seasoned beans.
Bowls of Rae-Juusto with tomatoes in vinegar on the side.
Caprese Salad.
1.5kg of blueberries.
Bunch of boiled eggs with some seasoned broccoli.
(These are all separate meals btw)
Spinach, tomato, feta, olive salad with a bit of olive oil.
A wok of stir fried Bok Choy with garlic and shiitake mushrooms.
Stir fried portabello Mushrooms, bellpeppers and onions with oyster sauce.
Baked potato that's mashed into with chuncks of sausage.
Chickpeas with fried eggs and curry.
Lentil, potato, and carrot paste boiled with chicken stock and mashed together with a touch of butter and eaten as a sandwich with some fried eggplant slices.
And on weekends, for something fancier, maybe a kilo of smoked salmon with bread, or some whole pork neck I cut from a bulk package and marinaded earlier in the week with broccolinni on the side, or some grilled pork chops with grilled spring onions and steamed sugarsnaps 🫛
I don't have kids but I do have 2 (maybe 3 soon?) partners to feed, and adults eat more than kids 😅
So I can say these feeds 3-4 adults
Yeah. Jobs kinda force it on me depending. If I can't eat on the job then I want something in my belly before and I will grab something for lunch and I want to eat when I get back home. When at home I don't like to eat for awhile after waking up and then sometimes eat one more meal as an early dinner and I don't like to eat after 8pm and usually not after 7.
We? 3 meals a day is warranted for manual labor-heavy jobs (like farmer, construction). I, in IT&tech, eat breakfast, maybe a snack if it's long inbetween and cook something at evening.
I often do heavy work and still usually skip breakfast, sometimes lunch too, eating just dinner then second dinner in the evening.
Who is 'we' exactly? Did I need someone's permission?
I'm not reading the article because I'm lazy.
I've found that I'm actually less hungry throughout the day, if I skip breakfast. So, even when I then have lunch, I'm satiated much quicker.
My working theory is that my stomach shrinks when empty, in particular throughout the night. So, if I don't shove down breakfast in the morning:
- My stomach can shrink even smaller until lunch.
- There is less empty space in the non-stretched stomach, so less hunger.
- When I do eat lunch, the smaller stomach fills up quicker, meaning I shove down less food for lunch, too, and therefore my stomach doesn't get particularly stretched until dinner either.
most people in the states actually think they're going to die immediately if they skip a meal, let alone two.
the "never don't eat, for any reason, ever--or you will DIE" mindset is one of the things we're most force-fed from birth onwards.
it's becase if you skip a meal, that's money that wasn't spent. if everyone skipped a meal, that's a lot of money that wasn't spent. we can't have that in capitalism. therefore, eat abundantly and often. it doesn't matter what, as long as it's something you bought
I've found the opposite. I find that a lot of the traditions regarding food don't stem from capitalism, but from vestiges of poverty and food insecurity no matter the economic system that poverty came from.
Grandma is a lot more likely to use food as a way to communicate love if she went through food insecurity as a child.
true, grandma would be absolutely horrified to hear anyone ate just one meal yesterday, on purpose, and plans to do it every day this week. it's almost blasphemy
but also the corporations selling everyone quick easy cheap (and disgustingly unhealthy) food-like substances at the drive thru and breakfast aisle certainly don't want anyone skipping any meals either. in fact they want you to be eating all day every day
the difference is grandma doesn't want anyone to feel like they felt in the depression, not knowing when they'll eat again, and corporations just want your money
Sounds like they are preparing people for a food crisis. Along with the Post article about not worrying about hydration.
I usually do 2 (and sometimes a snack) between ~11 and ~17 unless I know I'm going to be doing a lot of physical work on that day or won't be able to eat a real meal at a normal time. I have noticed no ill effects from doing this for years at this point.
Wasn’t the 3 meals a day kinda invented by cereal brands?
