    hydrophobia isn't fear of water.

    Yes, it is.

Classically exhibited as a symptom of rabies, which is probably what you’re thinking.

words do not decompose that way.

    Yes, they do.

Words used in medical terminology (Like many areas of science) were made using specific latin roots for a reason you numpty, and the reason why is so the definition is clear and set, and there won't be some idiot insisting a word means something it doesn't.

Take hypoglycemia for example. Hypo: Low Glyc: Sugar -emia: In blood.

Just try to divine what hypoglycemia could POSSIBLY mean given that information. It's a bit more than a fucking hint.

Dermatitis? Derma: Skin -itis: Inflammation. Sweet JESUS what ever could dermatitis mean?!?!?

Next you're going to tell me pericarditis, containing the roots Peri (Around) Card (Heart, Cardio) -itis (inflammation) means inflammation around the heart! Insanity!

So what ever in WORLD could a medical condition named HYDROPHOBIA ever mean?

Well you are both assholes for being so onbnoxious to eaxh other but both have valid points. You missed addressing phobia upstairs, which all contradict you.

Hydrophobia usually refers to a material which repels water.

    Username checks out.

Oh, jesus christ. 98% of the time, "hydrophobia" does not refer to fear of water.

Perhaps true. What would you call somebody who was afraid of water, though?

You cannot divine the meaning of a word you've never seen before by breaking it down into sub-word units of meaning.

You absolutely can for many, many words.

Not all words, of course. And some words, like hydrophobic, gain additional meanings over time.

you cannot definitively know what a word means

Sure, but this is a new standard that you seem have come up with in your rage.

What is the definition of hydrophobia?

He's probably referring to hydrophobicity in chemicals. Where the molecule is repelled by water. It's often called hydrophobia as well.

It's a bad example for a bad argument.

Yeah I guess this is more likely than rabies, though rabies is also referred to as hydrophobia.

I’ve heard of materials being referred to as “hydrophobic” but never heard the discussion around that property as “hydrophobia.”

It's a bad example for a bad argument.

    Yes.

Being uncomfortable around LGBT I can understand. It's dumb, you're dumb, you're stupid, but I somewhat understand. You've been brainwashed for decades and need a minute to adjust... I guess?

    But scared?

And of all beings, snoop Dogg? Wasn't he pretending to be a bad ass gangsta rapper?

    Afraid?

Afraid of two people holding hands?

Afraid of seeing a woman who might have some manly facial features?

Afraid of generally just really nice people living their lives?

Afraid of two (or holy hells, maybe... Even three!??) people that just love each other and live together in the same home and maybe like to do things together in the privacy of their own home that you maybe would not do?

AFRAID OF WHAT, YOU SHIZZLE FUCK?

He isn't afraid of gay people.

He is afraid of having to have the conversation with his grandkid about gay people having a baby due to the content of a kid's movie.

Sort of like how a grandparent would be uncomfortable discussing procreation with their grandkid. Shit, parents are uncomfortable discussing that with their own kids and that is a far easier and more straightforward thing than discussing sperm donors.

He is scared that a kid's movie will inspire questions that he is uncomfortable answering as a grandparent.

Why is the assumption by these people that there is a sexual component required in the explanation? Age appropriate explanations are easy.

"Know how some families have one mommy and one daddy? Some families have two mommies or two daddies instead."

If the kids ask about the actual mechanics of procreation they are old enough to hear something like:

"Some couples adopt or they find someone to have a baby with who helps them make a family."

Was there any need to mention surrogacy or donors? No. Kids don't need to oversexualize queer people. Adults don't need to over sexualize queer people! When people are sheltered from our existence until they are in their early teens they tend to think of gay couples as explicitly just sexual relationships rather than romantic or family building ones that are as dynamic as straight relationships because they were introduced to them as a sexual mechanics first kind of way. It's dehumanizing.

If a kid is old enough to ask this then you can tell them "oh a doctor can make you pregnant with an operation".

forreal, people have such low opinion of what kids can understand (because they think kids have all their own same biases automatically)

My partner teaches preschool, sometimes the kids ask her if she's a boy. She says she used to be but she's a girl now, the kids say "ohhh" and immediately move on. It only ever gets weird and confusing for the kids when the parents feel the need to argue that point.

It’s mixed. There’s the two major sides of that coin that I would split the style into and one is hyper materialistic and sexualized while the other is full of political commentary and sometimes even talks about mental health problems among other things. Like, while I’m sure you can find examples of both from any one artist there’s for sure a stark difference between Snoop here and A Tribe Called Quest.

  • Aw fuck. Why, man? Just why?

To those that don't know, Snoop Dogg has been making a lot of material for kids lately. He has a YouTube channel (called "Doggyland") designed for preschoolers. That means he actually does have an audience these days, even if they're far too young for Lemmy.

I used to think, "Aw cute, becoming a granddad has inspired him to create educational videos. He even gets to explore his new Bow Wizzle fursona!" (I mean.)

But this, this takes back all the joy. I wouldn't be surprised if some parents who hear about this decide to unsubscribe and/or block his channel.

And one day, that little girl is going to look at you and say, 'Daddy, did you really say that? Is that really you?' What are you going to say?'" she added.

Noone pointing out that this story is bullshit? If the kid knows how a baby was made, and understands enough that biologically speaking that it would be "impossible". The kid did not fucking ask that.

As much as I liked snoop as a kid we all knew that death row was full of shitty people who would do anything to get ahead. Suge knight would have his goons violently "handle" buisness afairs, and many people believe that he had Tupac killed. Snoop and Suge later "squashed the beef". Which is insane considering the allegations. He's scared to go to the movies, but will pal around with potential murderers? Okay Snoop.

At this point we should all view snoop as a made up character. Hes in so many good works of art gorillaz, trailer park boys, the boondocks and so on. All of which's creators would hate what hes said here and go against the messages of the works of media hes helped produce. Hes desperately trying to stay relevent, I think this is just another way of keeping his name in the loop. Pathetic.

Okay valid. but my point was that children arent stupid. I believe you as that 5 year old would have assumed adoption. I actually had this experience as a child, I knew a kid with two moms and from what i remember noone asked her how she was made. Questions were generally about whos the more masculine or feminine, or why they picked eachother and not just found husbands.

Maybe im way off base, and if i am i apologize. I just have to assume this story was manufactured to stir up contraversy. It reeks of the classic look what my kid wrote/drew to make some political point "even a kid understands this, see?".

obviously there is a time and place for these conversations, a theater is not the place. but on the otherhand he litterally says he told the kid to shush and eat popcorn. Whereas your dad or my mom would have have explained on the spot. The only excuse I can see is that its his grandson and maybe he isnt sure how his parents would react to him teaching him this stuff. but to me Its a serious enough topic that it should be explained at least later by them. Even if he isnt homophobic dancing around the topic certainly is.

Childrens media often covers serious topics like, death, mental health, divorce, bullying, diversity, disabilities to name a few. Its litterally designed to make kids ask questions like this. I dont think hed Ignore any questions on these topics. Infact theres probably 100s of examples he could have used when his own kids or grandkids asked heavy questions. Why did this stick out in his mind? The interviewers first example of this was anxiety, which is a much more reasonable approach to this conversation of "should we be putting this stuff in kids media?"

Also I just watched the clip from buzz lightyear for additional context. and my previous statement assuming adoption was not an option because it depicts the pregnancy and raising of the child. So I was off quite off base there.

    Edit: itallics

I challenge you to find a dozen instances of gay parents giving birth to a child without any added explanation. Yes there are hundreds of instances of LGBT+ relationships in kids media but there probably aren't many claiming two women can on their own produce a child.

All this being said IVF explains everything. Kids know babies are in bellies so it's just a different shot that some mommies get. When my buddy's parents had their first biological child at 7 his mom said she got IVF and that's how she explained it.

Im confused. My point was that the purpose of the scene was exactly to get the child to ask the parent about a heavy topic ( lesbian mothers and IVF). This could very well be the first movie to represent this, im not sure why thats relavent. I would think its unhealthy for a kid to go about modern life without being at least a mild understanding of alternate lifestyles. Ignorance classically promotes bigotry, fear, shame.

Nowhere in the scene or interview does it make any claims that this is physically possible without outside intervention. Assuming snoop is living under a rock and doesnt know about IVF. It would still be important for him to learn and look it up for his own intrests and the intrest of the kid who is asking.
