The title of the post ruined the meme. If it were just the picture it would be funny.

Agreed. Any idea where the picture came from? I really like the 70s saturated storybook look.

There is a problem where this need to reproduce is spread between billions of individual , you are insane to expect each one of them have same requirements and situation related to this need of reproduction or choice to deny that need.

I'm sitting here now wondering just who should reproduce and how do we determine who that is?

    who should reproduce?

    Anyone who wants to

how do we determine who that is?

By letting people have kids if they want

Billions of people that shouldn’t have kids. The world is fucked because of this half thought.

Harry and sally have 9 kids and live in a small shack, but they want to reproduce more. You just said they should be allowed to.

You wouldn’t advocate for child neglect and abuse.

I obviously don’t advocate for child neglect, but I also don’t think eugenics will solve child neglect. What you’re describing is poverty, and it isn’t helped by eugenics.

I also don’t think the earth is currently overpopulated, and it seems that our population growth will slow before the planet does become overpopulated (my personal estimate is that we can have about 15 billion people). So I don’t think we have any need for population control whatsoever.

How are you gonna stop people from reproducing without oppressing them? Literally what methods don’t involve creepy authoritarianism and body horror?

When you complain about overpopulation but not overconsumption (the actual problem, which most people can’t even afford to engage in), it sounds like you just hate poor people.

The way it's currently done is through culture. All the anti-child anti-family propaganda you see here and on reddit isn't an accident. The exact opposite is spread through church announcements and conservative message boards. Lo and behold, the people who doom scroll reddit and lemmy have fewer children than church people and conservatives.

The thinking, I guess, is that people who's life situation brings them to certain circles make better or worse parents. Who comes to Lemmy? In my experience, very unhappy people. Do we want unhappy people reproducing? Well, it seems like the answer is currently "no".

It should be a completely random lotery for a lucky 5 million people.

They will have to have no chronic diseases though, because we don't want to intentionaly perpetuate that.

And no, I'm not buying the ADHD/Autism is a good thing per-se part, that will pop up anyway.

Should also be people with higher empathy, who have an easier time learning, and a tendency for higher contribution to society.

After that, there should be an emphasis on food consumption (people who need less food on average get a higher weight in the lottery).

No, I don't care if people label it as eugenics, the goal is to reduce future suffering, as I found out my shitty genes make life not really worth it.

Yeah, that's what some of them said last time eugenics got popular.

We cant stay hung up on that, just because other people messed it up.

You don't cull people here, don't seggregate them, it is already being done with embryo selection.

I mean if it will be just 5 million people, might as well push for those that others wont hate and abuse, like they did to me.

No, you can drop me from my own lottery straight up.

Yeah, we can't not do eugenics just because bad people did it before and made an awful system out of it that hurt many, many people. Clearly we can do it the right way, and this isn't just the same argument that every horrible person makes to control who can reproduce.

It should be a completely random lotery for a lucky 5 million people.

And then you go on to describe a situation which is anything but random

Should also be people with higher empathy

This comes off as extremely ironic given the general lack of empathy you're showing

After that, there should be an emphasis on food consumption (people who need less food on average get a higher weight in the lottery).

what about this is "completely random"

Well, once they meet all those criteria, it is random.

lAcK oF eMpAThy. Idk why people are so insistent they have to make more crotch goblins, or why its so awful that you cant have them.

You know what? Fair, someone needs to lack empathy and say it out loud.

There are too many of us. The more of us there are, the less all of us are worth. The less chronic diseases or other issues that would make you a reject in society, the better.

People are going to do this anyway.

If it’s weighted then it’s not completely random, nothing about the system you described is “completely” random.

I was more talking about your attitude about ADHD/ASD when referring to your lack of empathy. Lacking empathy will make you more of a social problem than having a chronic illness, IMO.

Personally, I have some of the chronic illnesses you’re talking about. I love being alive and my life adds lots of important things back into my community. You sound very depressed and I’m sorry. But it’s not appropriate to take it out on others by being a big ol’ fascist on the Internet.

There are too many of us. The more of us there are, the less all of us are worth.

I disagree. All human life has value and it appears that our population growth will slow before we reach earth’s carrying capacity anyway.

People are going to do this anyway.

Some of you fascists already are, like the people advocating eugenics in this thread even though we all know what happened in WWII. You say “people are going to do this anyway,” I say, we defeated fascism once, and we’ll do it again.

  • I have diagnosed ADHD, and as someone with ADHD, I'd rather not trick people into thinking they can live like everyone else, only to have others bully them for something they have no control over.

I didn't suggest actually killing anyone. If people could handle ADHD/ASD, then maybe I would be fine with more ADHD/ASD people being made, but it is just asking for them to be bullied and rejected in this world. I strongly disagree with the idea that disease makes people unique, and that parents should make kids with say, sickle cell anemia or down syndrome, cursing them their whole life to a disadvantage that they could never consent to. We have embryo testing and selection.

It really does not matter how we profess to think about human life, if we keep treating it like a commodity. Realistically, because of the way our species choose to be, things will only get better long after most, or all of us are dead. The more of us there are, the more your employeer could say, just find another worker, the easier it is for a friend to cut you off casually out of convenience, the easier it is a society in general to apply laissez-faire rules to its society. When we were just tribes, every single person counted, and they would die to defend each other. You had to evaluate if it was really worth being enemies with someone, as everyone was invaluable.

Yes our population will outright crater over time anyway, even if we do our best to keep everyone alive, which certain billionaires are fighting hard against.

Now, about being a fascist, you hear something that sounds like eugenics, and of course, you react in disgust without thinking. This is just because eugenics is usually used as a pseudoscience to persecute certain people. I don't really care about race, ethnicity, or the genetic status of the already living (unless they want to CRISPR themselves somehow). I'm more about making it harder for people to be vulnerable and exploited, since most of my worldview is explicitly based on anti-trust. I assume most people aren't good, reasonable, or capable. Of course I would do anything, even the unthinkable in order to make it harder for people to exploit each other.
