There's a separate thread for the Senate elections, because that's far, far easier to track than the House races and the Gubernatorial races.

Consider this thread open to everything else! House, Governor, state and local measures, everything else!

Polls start closing at 7 PM Eastern, 4 PM Pacific. My plan is to be obsessively posting results as they come in.

Current standings:

US House of Representatives:
Republicans: 218
Democrats: 214
Vacant: 2
Independent: 1

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX23) resigned 04/14/2026.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL20) resigned 04/21/26.

Rep. Kevin Kiley (CA3) flipped from R to I in March, 2026.

Every seat is up for re-election with 218 necessary for a majority.

Update Current called races put the House at 253 D, 160 R, with 22 still undecided. As near as I can tell, Republicans only managed to flip a single Democratic seat, Texas 32.

For anyone claiming that it's all the same, I have a website tracking supporters of wealth taxation around the world and the US has remarkably many elected politicians who backs taxing extreme wealth. All but 1 are Democrats, and that's Bernie Sanders (but his seat isn't up).

25 people in the Senate backs taxing extreme wealth. 81 people in the House backs taxing extreme wealth. https://wealthtaxsupporters.com/us/seats

Texas fuckery for you: My coworker is a registered voter and Puerto Rican. He tried to vote a few weeks ago, but the lady at the election place got sketchy and told him there's a problem with his registration.

Yesterday he got a new registration card and planned to vote today...but they pulled a switcheroo on the location. The place where all the early voting happened is closed today in favor of an alternate location.

He was a maga voter last election who has since learned, and these barriers to his vote have reinforced his move back from the dark side.

He and his wife are in line now. When I hear back I'll edit this comment. The poll workers will be hard pressed to turn them away with fresh voter ID cards, but that doesn't mean they won't try.

Edit: They were able to vote.

Well, while agree that's some fuckery going on there, in my county the early voting location (only one in the county) is never open on election day (when there are many other locations open).

I can’t believe I’m about to go to sleep and have an actual, real chance of waking up to a blue Texas. It was mythical, intangible, a flight of fancy. And now I might see it with my own two eyes. I know I shouldn’t have even looked but I just couldn’t resist.

Of the 10 already-confirmed House seats, 9 are Dems. And I'm seeing a lot of light blue squares in Texas (uncalled yet but leaning Dem).

Governor, AG, LG, RR commish - wild. I’m elated. I didn’t think it possible, even in hopeful years past. That LG get is massive due to our ridiculous state lege. Anything else majority-wise is icing at this point. I know it’s not a universal rebuke across the country, even as things are going well. But I didn’t in my wildest dreams expect the absolute trouncing in the state. All TX Supreme Court seats went blue by good margins too.

'The Trump regime continues to attack all the independent institutions in this country that have traditionally served as buffers against tyranny – universities, non-profits, lawyers and law firms, the media, science and researchers, libraries and museums, the civil service and independent agencies – threatening them with extermination or loss of funding if they do not submit to its oversight and dictatorial demands. Trump even instructed the Department of Justice to investigate ActBlue, the platform that handles the fundraising for almost all Democratic candidates and the issues Democrats support. We are no longer Democrats or Republicans. We are either patriots fighting the regime or we are complicit in its tyranny. There is no middle ground. Trump is still actively destroying the economy. His proposed tariffs are still raising prices. His attacks on the Fed chief, Jerome Powell, persist in causing tremors around the world. Trump wants total power, even at the cost of our democracy and economy. His polls are plummeting yet many Americans are still in denial. “He’s getting things done!” some say. “He’s tough and strong!” Every American with any shred of authority must loudly and boldly explain the danger we are still in.

They sorta just came out and said it. They think we're "unhumans" that need to be killed. We're not real humans so the law can't protect us. JD Vance waved around a manifesto saying conservatives need to load up their muskets and ignore the rules. A lot of us believe them when they say they want us to die.

Lmao. People left California because the cost of living is too high because so many people want to live there (and because the state government is too capitalist to do anything to make it affordable). So they went to Texas, where it’s cheap because no one wants to live there because it’s even more capitalist.

AP hasn't called Sec. State or House D2, but they are not looking good. I was expecting a R sweep, but I was really really wanting to get rid of Cotton.

EDIT: Sorry, I lost the thread context. The above was about my state of Arkansas (where Rs are going to sweep).

Great! More blue in the South can only be good. I hope the Ds down here can focus on Working-class issues. If we could get a generation of blue-collar workers (incl. farmers and ranchers) that don't automatically vote R "for economic reasons", we might also see some movement on other attitudes.

  • source

  • [–] 18 points 3 days ago (9 children)

We are getting more years of this shit regardless. The best Democrats can do is conduct investigations (that will be ignored), hold debates (that will be ignored), and pass laws that will be veto'd.

That's better than the alternative but don't pretend like the midterms are going to be a major shift of power. Its just one step, the legislature. Republicans still have the Presidency and the Supreme Court backing them. Even if House + Senate go blue this year, that's 1 branch vs 2 branches.

  • source
  • parent
  • hideshow 9 child comments
  • [–] 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It’s still at least a branch that can stymie a lot of things.

I’m not saying things are magically gonna get fixed but there’s a lot of bad that’s been able to go through because congress is complicit or “shuts down” at the right time.

I don’t have a lot of hope and this is my only chance for a light at the end of the tunnel.

If the Democrats win the House of Senate, it's very good news regardless.

The Senate map is impossible. I mean it's probably happening but Texas, Arkansas, North Carolina are supposed to be impossible.

But it's only going to truly matter if the memomentum continues into 2028. This year is an important first step forward but that's all it is or can be, just a step.

As an Arkansan, I was really hoping we'd get rid of Traitor Cotton, but it was not to be. We've got a lot of misogynists ("I don't hate women, I just believe they should never be in leadership above a man.") and Cotton still resonates with many of the people that voted him in the first time. I voted against Lincoln in the primaries because of how she fucked with ACA / Obamacare, but I've never liked Cotton.

Dems taking the Senate by a few seats is important because it denies Trump further judicial or supreme court nominees. Having both chambers allows Democrats the ability to set the budget agenda and will force Trump to negotiate which he is terrible at.

    This is still important.

  • source

  • [–] 11 points 3 days ago (3 children)

If Trump loses badly, it will also send a powerful message. Then everyone knows that no one likes Trump no matter how Fox News tries to spin it. It will make the whole Republican party freak out for 2028.

Are you kidding? For Fox and Friends, the powerful message will be how effective the Dems rigged the election, and why none of them should be allowed to be sworn into congress. There are no teachable moments for the wilfully ignorant.

  • source
  • parent
  • hideshow 2 child comments
  • [–] 6 points 3 days ago

Yeah, but the election rigging works less well when the result is overwhelming for democrats. In fact, it might even alienate people who voted R before, but switched to D. Some part of the population will lap it up, but they will believe absolutely anything anyway.

  • source
  • parent
  • [–] 1 point 2 days ago

Yeah, there's a significant limit on what lawmaking can be done with an adversarial President. I think one potentially effective strategy is to pass legislation that is good for the country as a while, but where a Presidental veto would also weaken public opinion of the opposition. If there's no veto it's a total win. If it is vetoed, democrats make it part of their campaign strategies in 12-18 months.

Investigative and budgetary powers can also still be used, but they are less flashy and can play negatively in the media. If a D congress is seen as doing nothing but investigating Rs and shutting down the government, there might not be a D congress in 2 years.

I know you posted this twelve hours ago when the results weren't coming in yet, but at this point I've been watching the counts on the Associated Press and it's looking really good so far. I'm feeling a sense of hope for the first time in a long time.

We also have to keep the same pressure on the Dem Congress we were putting on the MAGA Congress (or even more because that wasn't enough either).

How many more DSA and generally anti-genocide politicians are in power now? Michigan even elected the anti-Fetterman in El-Sayed. The anti-genocide bloc is no longer a tiny fringe group, it DECIMATED AIPAC last night.

The pro-universal healthcare bloc is no longer a tiny fringe group. The people DECIMATED private healthcare funded Super PACs last night.

People need to understand we accomplished last night. We sent a message to the DNC that every Dem who defies their voter base can lose, no matter how much money they fight is with.

YES! For some reason, this is where everyone gets lost. We have these people talking about how voting Democrat won't matter because they're still not going to be effective, they're not left enough, there's no point in ever voting or performing your civic duty and that we should all give up and die.

But like, take the energy and anger you have against Republicans and apply that to the Democrats et. al. when they actually have some kind of power. NOW is the time to push for change. Lean on the old gaurd and show them what we want out of their party. We just showed that we'll cut out the rotted growth of America if given the chance. Dems that don't get the picture should be next.
