I've been vegan for a little over a year now and I realized why that old joke is true for a couple reasons. For one, there are a lot of commitments that involve food with coworkers and friends, so of course the fact that you're vegan and accommodations will come up there. But it's also just kind of a lot of work looking into ingredients and the reasons for why ingredients are or aren't vegan. It just naturally becomes something you talk about with coworkers and loved ones.

Dated a vegan with a closet full of running medals. She literally had a closet bar dedicated to those and nothing else on it. She jogged 5-miles a day as her normal routine. At 51, that woman was ripped.

Unfortunately, vegan and (I forget the word about living a simple, stuff-free life) was about all she could talk about. She had very little interest in anything else, but was nice to enough to listen to my ramblings on all the things.

Fun anecdote but from another side: I eat meat but not regularly. I ordered vegetarian option on a lunch with people because I didn't like the meat options they had. But the vegetarian person was like "why are you ordering vegetarian? You don't have food restrictions do you?" I didn't say anything but I was thinking "how does me being ok eating meat means I need to eat it every meal?"

I don't like eggs. I don't like the smell, I don't like the taste, I don't like the texture. I'm not allergic to them, but they make me gag. Whenever it comes up with someone who doesn't know me, I'm typically drawn into a tedious recounting of why I don't eat eggs and then the inevitable "You'd like my eggs, I make them differently." Oh, do you now? You've got a magic recipe that makes them not taste, smell and feel like eggs? If that's the case, what's the point of eating them?

All that to say, people should be left alone about their food preferences. In fact, there should be no conversation about what's on somebody else's plate beyond "that looks/smells good" and even then, only if they are dining together.

Except in the case that they're eating human meat; Questions are required.

Yup. When my wife asked me if one of my friend doesn't eat meat for religious reasons or sth else, my answer was "I don't know" because we never had that conversation. Some people are vegetarian, some are vegan, I don't really think about asking why unless it comes up. I know some of my cousins don't eat meat because they grew up in the city and one time they visited the farms and saw how meat is made and they couldn't eat after that. But that info came from their parents, I never thought about asking, and I like it when someone doesn't ask me about my preferences too when I reject certain food.

So true lol. I’ve heard waaay more people bashing on vegans than I’ve ever heard the self proclamations of a vegan.

    "We've got to eat meat"

    "You need protein"

    "I couldn't live without _____ "

Honestly, I think a lot of people just think I'm not hungry very often.

This is my step mom, and lesser degree my mom.

Step mom compliments me on the vegan dish being absolutely delicious, then goes right into you have to have meat, and then talks about all the favorite rib dishes and butcher places to get good meat. WTF, obiously I have zero interest in a butcher, and don't need to be "sold" on meat since I grew up with the guy she married and he took me hunting and we brought home game for food.

My mom asks if I'm still vegan when I visit, and I say yes, so she asks if quiche is OK because its just a bit of egg and milk. So I just order take out and show up with my own food, but then she asks if I want yougurt and fruit for dessert. Still vegan here mom...still vegan.

I've worked in hospitality for over 5 years, and I can confidently say vegans are my least favourite group to serve

No other diet had people showing up with a booking that didn't mention the diet. No other diet has people ask for a custom-made dish on days where the chef is already running around stressed out of their mind. It's just vegans

It comes across as entitled. So you're right. In my line of (past) work, vegans won't tell you they're a vegans until it's too late

To be clear, this was on a set menu we could do a vegan version of, but only if we were given at least a days notice beforehand. And we never were

That doesn't sound like a typical vegan, we typically have to research food places and ensure they can provide a meal otherwise you travel to a place and you get salad as the only option, or vegabs avoid meat serving places altogether. Sounds like you just get entitled people or people where friends made the booking and the vegan had no clue where they would end up.

Imagine being "gently ribbed" for not eating puppies.

    Not that I know of.

I can rephrase: imagine getting "gently ribbed" for not participating in something you find cruel and sickening.

It's not like eating cows and such is morally different.
