interesting to see the sentiment shift from "thank Goodness" to "step up"

I share the sentiment.

republicans today are straight up evil. like James bond villain evil. like firelord ozai genocide evil. I definitely am happy they're not in office and I voted against them. now I'd like the dems to do enough to keep the Republicans out in the next election.

you'd think it's not a big ask? but it apparently is .. 🙄

oh what perfect timing. I just got an email from the SSA saying this is the best year so far and they are doing great. that should clinch the senior vote.

now this article about science funding cuts should clinch the Republican vote cause they don't really like science or education.

red midterm wave coming up.... 🙄🙄

The research community is in uproar after OpenAI released a trove of more than 700 mathematical preprints entirely generated by AI on 6 October. The San Francisco, California-based maker of ChatGPT posted the preprints on the software repository Github.

Although some mathematicians celebrated the solution of longstanding problems, others took to social media to complain about being scooped. Some were incensed at what one physicist called a ‘slopocalypse’, even if the mathematical content could end up being formally correct.

This declaration was made September 10th. It has over 5000 signatures now.

Over the last few months, the mathematical capabilities of LLMs have improved dramatically, to the point that they can solve major outstanding problems in many fields of mathematics. However, the push by AI companies to solve mathematical problems as a benchmark is detrimental to the science of mathematics, and to the mathematical community. The goals of the AI companies and the goals of the mathematical community are severely misaligned. We see these as part of broader alignment issues impacting other scientific and creative professions, as well as the whole of society. more
